Jon's First Outdoor Grow: Sugar Breath Photoperiod & Strawberry Banana Autoflower

Yup - I’d have been sick to my stomach! But I have learned that these things have an AMAZING capacity to fix themselves with just having a little helping hand. Truly amazing plants!

She’s looking good and love the way you’re training her. Maybe one day I’ll be that brave *wistful sigh*

Our First Break!!!
Veg Day 47

It's so funny, I can remember when even a small break like I'm showing you here would have sent me into a tizzy. Lol. Now it's our "first" break. Hey, if you train aggressively, sometimes you're going to get a break here and there. The fun is fixing it. @Stunger has a great extreme example of this in his current balcony grow I've been checking out.

So I was evening things out and pulling branches to the side. I went to work on the four middle growth shoots. The idea with each of them was to supercrop them over so that they filled that middle space evenly, and also so that they sat squarely on top of the middle of the fan leaf underneath them. At the same time I was hoping to generate a bit of extra strength/support from the little knot that'll form at the supercropping bend site. As you can see in the pictures, I went 3 out of 4. These stems are small, and she's gotten 47 days of MSA. I gotta remember to think in terms of compensating for the effect of that in training. I heard the little *snap* sound we hate so much and knew immediately. So it's a small break, maybe 30% of the stem, and it was still upright, just tilted down around 45 degrees. Simple tape fix.

So here's the picture of the break and fix, a closeup showing what I was attempting and almost pulled off, and a picture of the whole girl from overhead post training session. I believe that stem will be fine, but we'll see. If it dies I'll make more. Lol.

Hey Jon good morning. Hope you are having a good day.
Judging by your post you might be a touch stressed.
Don't be she is fine.
I had a jher split right in half from rain weight on leaves.
Must have been an hour before I went outside and saw it.
Duct tape and zip ties saved the day.
Still got 6 oz from her.
Tape and zip ties can be our best friend some days.
She will be Fantastic.
That break will heal and be even stronger.
Keep on Rocken Brother. :thumb:

Stay safe
Bill

Thanks Bill I really wasn't worried about it at all. She lived anyway. Already almost back. Heh. After fixing that broken cola on the DSD, a break like this is to be laughed at.

Dos Si Dos Finished Buds
Let's Compare

Hey @StoneOtter, you might appreciate this one so I tagged you as a current DSD grower.

The indica looking buds from DSD 1, and the first ones taken, turned out to be the ones with the biggest, chunkiest buds and the most red hairs. I lost half of her to bud rot. Only got 2 ounces of finished buds from what was a QP plant. Too bad but it's awesome. DSD 2 I lost half the plant to seeds. It must have gotten brushed up against the Strawberry Banana outdoor that went hermie, cuz to my surprise, half the branches were seedy. Half were not. So again I only got 2 ounces from what was a QP plant. DSD 3, thankfully, was not only the highest yielder of the three, but also the one that came off without a hitch, no bud rot, no seeds. Haven't weighed her yet, but she's around 5 ounces of buds like these. Great yielder. Having half a pound or so of this DSD curing doesn't hurt. I'm real curious to see how the photo version in coco in the tent turns out.

So here's four pictures to compare the three plants.

1. All three phenos, Left to Right = DSD #1, DSD #2, DSD #3
2. Closeup DSD #1
3. Closeup DSD #2
4. Closeup DSD #3

Enjoy!

CJS Apple Blossom
Further Topping and LST Session
Day 48

I topped the four most upper colas, ie, the two mains of the first topping and the two branches 90 degrees for them which had overtaken them in height. Also tied the supercropped middle growth to where I wanted it. The break is obviously going to fix itself, it would have been dying by now and instead is going the opposite direction. Note that she has no tie on her. Also evened out the two side branches with the mains. Once we get that canopy evened out, it'll take a little bit, we will be close to putting her outside to flower.

Here's an overhead, a zoom in a bit on the middle, and a side shot of her post training session.

She's a looker!
So Jon, did you ask me about the first set of branches, and if it may be a good idea to just lop them the other day?

She looks beautiful and well trained!

I did and I did. Lol. I got responses from a few others and found a consensus fairly quickly. I'm debating the second node growth leaving a bit later too depending on how it grows out from here. So first node gone, top fours topped, and the rest of what you see. I'm fairly comfortable with what is going on so far. But thanks for getting back!

Just for Fun Friday Post
Fun with Gorilla Zkittlez Red Hairs

A few pages back I threw out an "off the wall" question about red hairs and keif and such. @Rexer responded, but someone else asked me if I picked the red hairs out individually, and I can't find that post now. But for that person, (@Azimuth?), I thought for fun I'd display the process. Now that I did it accidentally, today I recreated it on purpose. Lol.

So the pictures:

1. This is the pile of basically just red hairs that resulted from the kiefing of the Gorilla Zkittlez trim today and banging around the Trim Bin.
2. This is the same pile, just zoomed in. You can see it's not 100% perfectly red hairs only, but mostly, and enough that you don't taste any bitter from any green. Plus before you smoke you pick out any pieces of green you can by hand.
3. Here's a perspective shot on the party bowl for the bong so you can see how much of this there actually was.
4. And of course, the best part.

The buzz from this is immediate, hits you really hard in the face, and is so expansive it's almost uncomfortable for a few minutes, and would be for sure to a moderate smoker. It's a bit harsh but tasty, with it's own taste - much closer to the taste of the kief than the taste of a bud. Perfume-y. Sweet. EXPANSIVE. And when you recover it's a way up thing. Like a super sativa effect. Very interesting buzz. Also shorter lived than smoking the bud itself.

Like I said, just for fun. Have a great weekend everyone.

I think it was actually @Grand Daddy Black . I'll tag him in so he doesn't miss the post you did just for him.

I want to tell you I looked at the 4 plants running now and I have to change my position on it. Out of a possible 8 first branches there's only 2 left. I apparently didn't think right answering you.

I'm confused too, lol. No, it's all good, I get it. You must have kept the fourth node and taken the six from nodes one, two and three, right? This is approximately what Shed is telling me too. I told him that I need to lose my trepidation about taking this stuff and just do it when the time is right and if it's appropriate. I am certainly going to take my second node growth off soon. The third is part of my canopy so that stays. But yeah, I need to be more aggressive. I'm wasting too much energy on growth that becomes maybe one bong hit of a bud and flarf. Thanks!!

Hey Jon,

I'm new to your journal so I'll have to go back and catch up a bit.

When I top, I like to leave a bit of a stub protruding up from the node rather than cut it flush. That seems to strengthen that node and help keep it from splitting down the road when the plant gets bigger and stronger.
I can't tell from the pics if that's what you did or not, but the plants look beautiful. :welldone:

Hey, thanks Azimuth, and thanks for stopping in again! Yes, I feel the same way. I didn't post a zoom but there's a measurable amount of stem left above the topping cut - like maybe almost 1/4". Plenty, I thought. I usually wait on the node I'm going to cut off till it has that much stem and the two new growths I'm turning into colas is already a bit developed. I can't stand topping when there's just two little nubs of new green on each side and it doesn't even look like leaves yet, lol.
