Jon's First Outdoor Grow: Sugar Breath Photoperiod & Strawberry Banana Autoflower

Lol, no, it's easy to see cuz I was in both for veg. I get confused myself, which is why I have tons of charts written out all over the place. Veg was 20/4. 10 sun/10 MarsHydro FC-E6500. For flower they go all outdoors which is real close to 12/12.
Actually @Bill284, I was going to ask you about that. The light cycle here is really at this point more like 11/13. And of good, direct light, maybe 8/16 if I look at it that way. Do you think the light cycle of even less than 12/12 might be partially responsible for why these girls seem to be finishing so quickly?

@NextLight Report (As Promised)
420h Quad Board

So the picture shows the very smallest, very most bottom bud on the biggest Strawberry Banana auto, grown under the 420h. The five autos - 4 Strawberry Bananas and 1 Gelato, all spent every moment of their lives under this light. They did not go outdoors. That was the whole point - to assess the light. I promised the NL folks I would give an honest assessment. Now that the rig is dark (temporarily, hehe), it's time for that.

I pictured the very most bottom bud on the densest plant of all for a reason. These are the buds on your plant when you harvest that are always flarf. They get little or no light. They usually stay completely green, or often, instead of changing colors like the buds which get light do. They often feel a bit moist - like junk. That's the usual bottom of the plant buds, I would argue, for most of us, regardless of our skill set. And of course you get varying degrees of these flarfy buds, both regarding their "quality" and their physical appearance. But the point is that most of the time this bud would be junk.

Not under the 420h.

One of the ways that I assess the effectiveness of any light is it's penetrating power. How far through the plant leaves do those photons travel? How deep towards the bottom of the plant does the light actually have the desired effect, and at what point do the lowest buds become flarf? This is all about the spectrum of the light and the focus of your LEDs, independent of your particular choice of how you use the dimmer or whatever. But most of us, for flower anyway, would be running our lights at 100% power. This one ran at 100% from day one of seedling. I prefer to always run at 100% and adjust the canopy distance instead of using a, what's it called, dimmer? :D

This bud is dense. Frosty. Complete looking in it's appearance. Properly shaped. Just as colorful as the colas. Equally well balanced in terms of it's red/green distribution. Is it as dense as the colas? Not quite. But it's WAY close to it. And this bud, in theory, got hardly any light at all. It was buried in a dense mass of central buds that had to be carefully cut apart to dry them - it was bigger than my closed fist. I mean buried. This bud should be flarf.

The 420h has some SERIOUS penetrating power. Especially for a quantum board.

Also having shown several of the finished buds of the plants now, you can see how there's a uniformity to all of them. Yes, different phenos maybe, but very consistent across the board in terms of density, color, shape, etc. What this tells me is that the footprint of the 420h is very very solid within it's preferred range. In my opinion, that range is 3x3. This light would certainly work in a 4x4 or you could even stretch it and make it work potentially in a 5x5....but imho, it is best suited and most effective in the 3x3 square. That's the size tent I'd use it in. Not that you see a lot of 3x3's. Lol. Just saying in my opinion that's where the magic of the footprint is. Even in a 4x4 I would try to keep my plants within that 3x3 block.

The light isn't really advertised as being for a 5x5. It's very accurate to it's stated numbers. In my opinion, the NL guys got the marketing of this light correct. By that I mean they tell you the REAL information, not any trumped up par numbers or anything like that, as you will find with lesser quality lights. This is also a big plus. It's nice to be able to depend on the numbers that come from the folks who actually make the damn thing.

The weed is all very pungent, very dense, very VERY frosty, and very good. On every level this is a nod to the 420h. The plants LOVED the spectrum, obviously. Which is important considering it doesn't change.

The dimmer, for real, works amazingly well. You will find many lights with dimmers that don't. They'll cut out altogether at about 20% sometimes or something of that nature. Not this one. Full sweep, 0 to 100, with discernible to the eye differences exactly where you'd think, and discernible to my Phototone app 100%. Lovely for those who use it.

Set up couldn't be easier, and it's extremely well balanced and very solidly built.

I am going to go as far as to say this is the best quantum board I have ever used for it's size. It's simply an amazing light. For what NL charges for it, imho, it is an extremely good value.

Oh, how did it yield? Not sure yet, but close enough to get close. Five autos, minimally trained, no intention of going whole hog on them. Knew they'd be smallish plants. Knew I wouldn't get super high yields. Was okay with that cuz this was a quality assessment grow. Well, the first two SBs are 2 z's apiece. 3 and 4 are likely 3 z's apiece. And the Gelato is likely 4. I'm estimating 14 ounces from these five plants under the 420h.

Almost a pound. From a quantum board. In my experience that's damn okay.

There is no downside to this light. If you have it, or maybe if you recently won it as I did, you are one very psyched guy or gal.

THANK YOU SO MUCH NEXTLIGHT for your amazing sponsorship and support for all of us. I feel safe speaking for the group when I say that we all really appreciate it. Awesome job.

EDIT: DUH, it would help to actually post the picture. Lol. Here you go.

@NextLight does it so well! Look at the trichomes on that bud! 420h for the win!

That could be the case.
Extra hours of building that chemical, can't ever remember the name of it, that causes flowering.
Reminds me of that experiment we were going to do.
Talking one plant out for a day giving 24hr darkness mid flower.
But you know why I never had the chance.
I still plan on trying it.

Stay safe
Bill

On the new growth...keep in mind that new growth late in flower comes with new clear trichomes, so harvest timing becomes a balancing act between old and new.
Good point, thanks.

Partial Harvest Update
Raspberry Parfait
Grow Day 83
Flower Day 47

Well, so after consulting with @Emilya and @InTheShed, I decided to go ahead and do a partial harvest on this girl. I found five branches that I deemed ready. My assessment of "ready" was based on trichomes (10% amber/90% white or so with a smattering of clear), the buds appearance (they look "finished," they have the right shape, the dark and colored hairs are completely curled into the bud, they don't need haircuts, there is no new growth), the "feel" of the buds, ie, are they dense and do they feel like there's no "popcorn" inside them (potentially unpopped new growth is my theory there, I kind of feel like you can basically feel it in the buds if you feel them at the right time...might be a just a dumb Jon thing....), and I guess the difference between the unfinished and finished buds. Very easy to take and very easy to trim the fan leaves and hang. Took me all of five minutes to do the actual work. I spent half an hour carefully choosing those branches first. Lol.

So here's the girls before I trimmed the fans and after I hung them. Cute little buds. But MAN will they be good. My room literally smells like a dank raspberry patch from just those five branches, no joke. It completely overwhelmed the smell of the entire huge Gelato drying in the same closet, and that plant stunk I thought. Now I know a new level of stink. This is by far the stinkiest bud I've ever grown. By 1000 miles, it's not even close. You can smell these little five branches at the whole other end of the house. It's incredible. The smell is obviously one of the superstar qualities of this strain, I didn't do anything to make it stink. Not one thing in fact. This plant was watered on top of Geoflora nutes every 13 days, right out of the tap, when she needed it. That's the entirety of what I did.

VERY excited. Chopped off one little bud to toaster oven cuz.....I can't not. Lol. Can't WAIT to be disappointed!!

I hope the mods like this. My take on a real cool vase and flowers shot.

Congrats on the partial! Sounds like it smells like a winner so I sure hope you're not disappointed. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Lol! :welldone:
God no! I'll still get a QP from her, and the quality, at least based on the smell and look, should be amazing. I just expected more buds. The PUC will easily yield twice as much bud, wait till you see how fat they're getting. Supposed to be a 45 day fast flower. They're not far away.

Congrats on the partial! Sounds like it smells like a winner so I sure hope you're not disappointed. :cheesygrinsmiley:

I did say it might just be a dumb Jon thing....LOL!

Coco Photos
Day 2 Flower

So @Bill284, have I mentioned that you're the fricking MAN?
Look at these girls that you are basically growing and I'm carrying out your orders on.

The only way to say it is that these girls have EXPLODED into the stretch. This is truly insanity.

They began Week 5 of the Fox Farms feed chart today. I started this week at prescribed dosages since it's our switch week to bloom nutes on the chart. If you agree, let's start there and see if we need to up it after a few days, yes?

And I haven't even made the damn tea yet! I know...I will....life keeps getting in the way.

I'm wondering if they'll start to show budlets faster or if it will happen at normal time. I wanna see them stretch to the heavens for a nice solid two weeks though first. It's fun to watch these girls. Way more fun than soil. Seeing, I mean literally every morning, being able to visually see growth is truly a new experience and I can't tell you how satisfying it is.
Thanks for all the help man. I can't begin to find words for all the help you're providing.

Here are the rockets. Elon Musk would be jealous. This is how they woke up this morning. Ignore the photo banners if you look at them, the photo order below is completely accurate. Banners are not.

- Blueberry (had to give her a support pole this morning, she's so damn top heavy....)
- Strawberry Lemonade (I don't know what she did, but she sure is praying for serious forgiveness.....)
- Dos Si Dos (obviously an accessory to the SL and whatever crime they committed, look at her pray....)

Seedling Check
CJS Apple Blossom
Chocolope
Day 15

The girls got their last feeding from bottled water today. Starting tomorrow they will both begin the @Prescription Blend nutrient regimen. Two sets of leaves, two weeks old. Perfect. As I hear and see for myself so often, the soil really does have everything a seedling needs for two weeks. Well, the AB has two sets. I'm not quite sure how to gauge whatever the Chocolope has going on. The PB folks told me this is when to begin the feed chart week 1, so I'm going with it. Excited to showcase these nutes a bit, and thank you Prescription Blend!

CJS Apple Blossom is perfect.

The poor Chocolope. When I look at her, this is what I do:

:laugh::laugh::rofl::rofl::laughtwo::laughtwo::hugs::hugs:

That is, first I crack up. Every time. Out loud by myself. Lol. Then I sing her words of encouragement. But straight up this is the absolute oddest start of my growing experience. What a nut. I can't wait to see what she does. She even has a little yellow tiger streak. It's hilarious. But I believe in the girl. We're sticking with her.

Note: if I only had a couple plants this seedling would already have been pulled and another in it's place. Lol. Having a lot of plants does provide a certain freedom in those kinds of choices.

Here they are:

1-2: CJS Apple Blossom (obviously)
3-4: Chocolope (? - sort of - lol)

Questions...

Hey @Bill284, or anyone else with coco experience who wishes to chime in, I have a question.

With coco, do you water to runoff? I didn't see the point so haven't to this point. But I will begin to if I should. Never thought to ask.

Thanks in advance guys!

That apple blossom is already reaching past the sides of her pot - WOW!

As for chocolope; I say she has some character - she’s not straight like everyone else; rather she’s doing her OWN thang!

Had to go pick up groceries and missed all the action.
Shed is right ,you don't want crap building up in the pots water to run off.
Do you read the stuff I tell you?    hehe
Run the last week of veg on you chart until you see pistols ,then start week 1 of flower on your chart. :thumb:
Lots of fun aren't they.
Grow like Champs if you pound it to them.
Can't tell you how many runs hit the lights before I got it perfect.
Just top dress them before you feed if you don't have time for the tea.
It's important. ;)
Your ladies are just beautiful mucker.

Stay safe
Bill

Ok. I try Bill, I have a ton of stuff to read. I know, I know. Okay, so tea or top dress, will do tomorrow for sure.

Got it on the water to runoff, glad I haven't had an issue yet. It's not like I've been doing zero runoff, that's impossible with these. But it's only been like 5%. I'll go normal with that like soil. Shed, thanks also for the same answer.

So it sounds as if I should go back to week 4 until I see pistils. Ok. That's only a week. No problem.

As always.....:adore:
