Jon's First New Digs Grow

Fun Comparison

Even though I have tons of my own weed, none of it is especially recent and I’m a variety aficionado. So often I will buy some weed even when I have it. And now that I’m home in PA and around all my friends, I’m back to being a well connected individual. And today I got pretty lucky. My boy had some Colorado organic weed. I got some of two strains, Double Stuffed Oreo and Gorilla Cookies.

The DSO was a new strain for me but I just grew the Gorilla Cookies auto. I had two of them, and got a green pheno and a purple and silver pheno. The purple pheno was among the best auto weed I’ve ever grown. Super high quality and all around great weed. I just entered it last month in the NOTM contest.

Now I can present a comparison.

So this is my Gorilla Cookies auto:

And this is the Gorilla Cookies photo organic indoor I just grabbed from my buddy:

I dare say I did alright on the auto. It is almost exactly like the photo in every regard. Only difference I can see is mine is a bit more furry, and his is a small touch denser. But definitely the same strain.

FWIW.
If my version had been machine trimmed as this street bud is, it would look almost identical. Imo.

Hey Carmen - I thought about this some more and I settle on this: there’s no such thing as “age appropriate growth.” It’s way too strain specific for there to be a “reference point.” It’s also medium specific, environmentally specific, light specific, etc…. There are simply too many factors involved for it to be possible to find a commonality that you seem to be searching for. Imho.
Nah not really. I can get a decent sense of a plant's developmental progress and know the ballpark. I'm getting what I need to know by looking at other people's plants comparatively.

Day 19

I have one that’s jamming and one that takes longer to come back up after watering. The smaller and tighter one is not as cooperative just yet.

So here’s a picture of each plant and then the third picture shows the first, single leaves of the taller plant after the cotyledons. Note the side branching coming out of there, and you can compare in size to the larger side branching on the first actual node. That is unusual in my experience. Not sure I’ve ever seen it, but definitely never with this strain. They’re small and kind of underdeveloped compared to the higher ones, and I will likely hack them off, but they’re pretty cool. Also note: the color is perfect. They look a bit N light in the pictures (imo) but it is a function of the “washed out” look the 420h creates in photos.

Next watering (they just got hit this morning) I will begin the Bat Guano/EWC top dressing routine. Up to this point they’ve gotten only water. Directly out of the faucet of my bathtub. 🤣

Plants are looking healthy Jon, i get those also at the single leaves on most of mine after i bend it over/LST & they turn out to be a nice size

Day 21

Topping day for the faster growing (taller) plant. The tighter one is at the correct node to top, but I’m waiting a day on that one for the growth to give me more stem to cut. So now the topped
plant, if I grew it out as is, is a ten cola plant.
Likelihood is she will become an eight and I’ll lose the first two side branches at the very bottom. For this strain, eight is plenty for a 5-gallon pot, they’ll get big.

Day 23
First Training Steps

Today I did the first training on the taller plant. I’m going with an 8-cola ring. I’m using the side branching from the first three nodes plus the pair from the topping at node four. The tiny side “branches” (lol) coming out of the single leaf node will be chopped. My first step is to determine the height I believe they will catch up at so that they’re all on the same level. Ideally it’s a ring as close as possible to the height of the top of the stem. The two shoots from the topping will go almost horizontal in a few days, and I’ll keep them that way until the other six colas match that height. In a perfect world this all happens before the stretch. Easy with photos. Autos, not so much. The lower branches, if left alone will rarely if ever catch up before flower hits. You gotta help them out.

So here’s a few shots of the plant from various angles. The third picture is the closest to the actual color.

To get this, I first raised the lowest node branches as high as I could.

Then I pulled the third node down.

The second node I left alone, which gives us this:

The tops I left to get longer a few days.

Which gives us close to a six cola ring with just that simple effort:

Now we wait.

Day 24

We are growing much more quickly now. I accredit this in part to the fact that by now the roots have hit and are into the California Super Soil enhanced base inside the pot, ie, the bottom half of the pot. I use it exactly as is directly out of the bag with no amendments. Google it sometime if you like. The ingredients in this product are as close a mirror to the list my Yoda and Sensei @Gee64 uses for theirs that I thought I’d give it a shot. So far I’ve had excellent results with it. In every attempt so far with this CSS base and my soil mix up top, I notice the plant takes off when the roots get into the lower half of the pot. In fairness, they also hit that lower soil at about the point when they’d begin to grow a little faster anyway just due to having more solar panels. But this tells me I need to improve my soil mix, lol. This essentially is using the upper mix as just a facilitator to get the plant to where it’s big enough to get to what it really craves. But it also allows me to tweak my soil recipe. The longer term soil mix I’m starting to mix now for the spring is much closer in ingredients to the ones listed for the California Super Soil.

So what observation prompted this post? Simply seeing how much the two tops grew out in 24 hours. They almost doubled in length, and are now pulled over horizontally a la yesterday’s post. Yesterday they were too small and frail to take the chance. Today they’re as ready as can be.

Goddamnit I knew there was a reason I didn’t turn on or look at news today.

Phil Lesh is gone.

RIP Phil.

😣😩😫😖
I guess I gotta find out somewhere but your thread is not what I was expecting. The musicians I grew up with are dropping like flies. Smh it’s really sad 😢. CL🍀

Day 27

Barely into day 27, I look up, and suddenly we are in flower. Jeez. Quick for this strain in my experience. Never gotten less than 30 veg days and usually closer to 35. Hmm. Anyway this is the trained and taller plant. There are several shots of her first.

The other plant is not yet in flower and is a bushy beast. And the stem on her! I’m going to take the top two fans tomorrow at watering, and order her up a bit.

Here’s first the flowering plant and second the bushy one:

Think it may be the medium? Wonder if growing in coco there's more growth hormones raging since it's growing so fast and in an organic mix things move a bit slower and there are less raging hormones?

Will be interesting to see if this is a fluke or if it will be consistent with your new grow mix. :hmmmm:

My thoughts exactly.
