Jon705's First Attempt at Organic SuperSoil Featuring TopLED's New COB LED Panel

Hi Jon,

I have a few questions for you.

You wrote...

as for pots I use 10 gallon nursery pots but you could use air pots or cloth grow bags whatever you prefer. from clone I would go 1 gallon pots, 2 weeks later I would transplant to 3 gallon pots then 7 gallon pots to flower.

---------------------------------

As far as the pots for vegging, if I use fabric pots right from the start, I'm a little concerned that it might be hard to get the plant out to put into the next bigger size. Any thoughts on that?

By the way, I'll be using supersoil – organic. From what I've read, it does better using bigger pots as opposed to smaller ones. I just don't know where or if there is a cut off on results versus size.

Would a longer veg time increase my yield? How does one know how long is long enough and how long is too long?

Thanks.

Sorry, I ment the final transplant would be into fabric pots. as for supersoil well im not really the guy to ask just yet, this is my first try with it. It depends on how big your going to grow your girls. Subcool the guy that invented supersoil grows his plants to around 5.5 feet tall in 7 gallon pots, 63 days veg 63 days flower but there are alot of variables, how much training will you do? my plants will also finish around 5.5 feet tall but they will be almost as wide to, hence the 10 gallon pots and now im wondering if I should of got 15's. what you use for your base can also affect how much you need per plant. You want the plants to start getting that nice organic fade around week 7 or 8 its going to take a little time for you to figure these things out but going on your description of your rooms I think you would be fine with 7's for your final pot.
A longer veg time wont really increase your yield because the bigger the plants the less of them you can have in your room and eventually you will run out of head room, I think what we discussed in pm's would work well for you, 4 plants per light. Check out some weed nerd vids on youtube, theres a couple hundred of them from subcool, all the info you could ever need on growing with supersoil is in those vids bro:)

I went from 2 Gal SmartPots to 7 Gal ones and I just peeled the 2Gal ones down. Its kinda messy from the loose dirt falling everywhere but not hard to remove them from the smaller pots. You will tear some roots that are stuck to or through the fabric but my plants didnt seem to be bothered by it.

Thanks Jon - I had looked in YouTube but was searching on the wrong term.

Thanks for the size perspective I think i will be trying out some larger bushes here real soon.

And huge props to Shottafire for being a fantastic mentor.

I have never found such helpful people and incredibly useful forums elsewhere.

Those plants look great! You're doing pretty well for only having grown hydro for so long. Brave too considering it's your livelihood. :bravo:

welcome Hiker, I figured you were still really busy bro, glad you made it. I think once you give it a try your going to like it better than hydro, it might take a couple rounds to dial things in but it really is alot easier in many ways imho:)

I think I mentioned in my journal, but I'm planning to continue with my bucket system and expand into perpetual with soil. My flowering room will be about tripling in area. That's just the floor space. I can't light it all yet. The plan is a 3 cycle perpetual. One of the cycles will be my existing hydro system. The others will be soil. I may start with just 2 cycles. We'll see. I'm planning to try SS in addition to other soil based growing styles, ie Doc's kit, teas, etc.

I've been a little wary of soil because it's been awhile since I grew in soil, and I don't really have room in the basement to mix large batches of soil. It would look suspicious for me to be seen mixing that stuff up in the backyard, but we did a bunch of things outside that will make that a non-issue (put in another flower bed, prepped a veggie garden for next year, redid an existing flower bed, put about a dozen huge houseplants all over the house).

I definitely see the appeal of 'just add water'. :Namaste:

But it will be hard for me to ever let go of my hydroponics completely. I just love the control. Soil intimidates me because I really don't know what's going on inside that bucket of dirt. I know what's inside my buckets of inert rock and my nute soup. :MoreNutes:

I am going to build a waterfarm style bucket to play with but I will always stay true to my roots with organics in soil.
I cant wait for jon to give his results and smoke reports I have a feeling he is going to love the flavors and the terpenes the soil can create.

i'm with you on that Hiker, love having the control of hydro. :)

even with the unmentionable nutes in promix the flavors are much more pronounced and they are alot more complex, I cant wait to see how the full organic turns out:)

Thanks Hiker I couldn't be happier with how things are going, I was nervous at first but I see good things happening with this supersoil once I figure out how much I need for plants this size. The timewrecks got transplanted from 2.5 gallon pots to 7 gallon pot with all supersoil and no buffer 3 days ago and they couldnt be happier:)

Hey now, that's not how it's suppose to be done! Actually I was just wondering about that myself, should I do it this way or that and now I know. Did you're 2.5 gallon have any supersoil in it? Or did you use just straight soil and wait till before flower and transplant.

Jon - based on your size examples, I went and measured my space carefully again with that in mind. And I think you are right – 7 gallon containers with 4 per light. 9 plants in the flower space might also work. But definitely 7 gallon pots.

Shottafire recommended I go with square-based pots due to the size of my vegging tent which is 4' x 4'.

The fabric containers I want to use are called yield pots - what I like about them is they have a smaller, square footprint but are taller. If you want to see what I'm talking about you can go to fleebay and do a search for buyfabricpots. (I am not promoting or advocating any of these things so moderators cut me some slack - just trying to be very clear so I can get specific answers.)

The smallest size these pots come in is 2 gallon and they have the following dimensions: 6in L X 6in W X 9in H X Diameter: 13.5in

Could I go directly from rooted clone to one of these 2 gallon pots for veg? Then to the 7 gal for flower? Yield Pots don't come any smaller and I'm just trying to keep this as simple as possible and yet as effective as possible too.

These pots seem a little bit more rigid than the normal felt cloth type of smart pot. So I'm not totally sure that I will be able to peel them down very easily. But from what I'm reading here, I should be able to get them out and into the bigger pot without much difficulty.

If instead of doing this all at once, I start three plants per month in a perpetual grow, I might be able to do away with keeping mothers and just clone the clones. The average flower time for most of my strains are 11, 12 and 13 weeks so that might be a far more intelligent way of doing this and free up some space in the veg tent to be able to work with the plants more. Though it also sounds like quite a bit of work to keep the timing going straight. It also sounds like a lot of fun.

personally I would use stiff pots until the final grow bag, your really not worried about getting root bound until the final pot anyways, why go throught the trouble of getting your plants out of the small fabric pot when you dont have too? 4 plants per light so were talking maybe a month veg time or you will outgrow the footprint so maybe 3 gallon pots to veg then into the 7's for the last week of veg so they get passed transplant shock if there is any then flower them:)

I agree. much easier on the plant to transplant from a stiff pot not fabric pot.

Got it Jon and Shottafire.

Looking for those containers right this second.

Can I go directly from rooted clone to the 3 gallon hard plastic container for flowering?
