Jandre2k3's Cardboard Flower Box - Test 4: ScrOG

Hey folks! Just got back off a fishing trip. I was foolin' around in my inflatable w/ trollin motor. Dropped a blue spoon in on my ultralight rod, and took of at a blazing "1" on the motor. Was calm for about 30 and min and the water was a warm 50degrees at the surface, so I started dragging out more line to get deeper and colder... nothing yet, so I decided I wanted to go "upstream" on Lake Natoma so I started my wide turn. Just about the time I got to the other side, and straightened out... BAM!! I damn near lost my rod over the side. Fucking rocks... I went too deep... but then it started shaking as well... HOLY CRAP FISH ON!

I loosened the drag a bit so when he really started fighting he would pull out some line rather than break it. Then I realized I still had the troller on!

"Crap," I muttered and reached up and turned it off... wait now I'm going backward!

"FUCK! I said 'OFF'," I shouted at the damn motor, and twisted the handle a careful 1 click to center and checked to see that "Off" was at the pointer.

There! Now I can concentrate on the fight.

The first three or so minutes was a cacophony of dragging line and me muttering something about not having that much line and hoping that I didn't let him get it all. It finally calmed down enough for me to start playing some line in so I clicked in the drag a few and started... Carefully tip up, reel down. Let him drag some out, then another careful, slow tip up again, to reel some more in.

Remember that I'm in an inflatable? Sure, it's 9 feet long, but it's still not as heavy as a john boat. I'm getting dragged toward the trees!! Think- think- think- Hold the tip straight up, and crank the trolling motor up to "5" and till hard over to head away from the trees. Well, this is one smart fish and he's not having any of that. He starts dragging more out as I'm trying to head the other way.

"Oh, no you don't," I mutter and turn a couple more clicks on the drag.

Someone on the shore laughs and yells over that I'm just snagged- just in time to watch this fish break. Then he yells over "HOLY SHIT! That's no snag!"

"I KNOW," I yelled back, "now let me fight!"

I hear him say something to his buddy about n00bs and ultralight gear on this lake and tune him out.

Back to the fish...Okay... I've got him nervous, he broke... and I'm heading away from where he wants to go. I turn down the motor to "1" again just so I won't lose any more water to him, but I'm running out of room to the other side. This lake is more of a dammed river and only about 100 yards, side to side. I stop the motor, and kick the anchor over the side and wait for the rope to stop coiling out.

Yes... anchor... on an inflatable... it's one of those sand filled free weights for a dumbell. 13lbs on a rope. I tie it off to one of the grab handles, and turn back to the fish.

"You're mine, now" I whisper and set my mind to a good fun fight on 6 pound gear.

Tip up, reel down. Tip up, reel down. He's pretty tired after about 8 minutes, and I'm gently pulling him my way. In my mind, I know what's coming, but I'm surprised when it happens. As soon as this thing sees the boat, my reel starts complaining like it never has before.

"SHIT! He's heading to the rock bottom! He's gonna drag the line on the rocks!" I screaming in my mind.

Smart fish indeed. He didn't live this long in this lake by being dim.

Through my teeth, I growl, "Oh no you don't!" and stick my arm and rod straight out and lean as far to my right as I dare to try and turn him. It worked, he starts heading upstream.

"REEL, FUCKER!" a voice in my head cries.

I start reeling and he almost gives up. It's pretty easy to regain lost ground. Relief starts to wash over me as I realize we're nearing the end. I start to relax a bit and think about what I need when I get him to the boat...

"Net- here... Pliers for the hook- here... Bucket- on the damn dock... Stringer? YES! There we go... I can drag him to the dock on a stringer..."

Back to the fish. He's almost to the boat when he tries the same damn thing again! Straight down! Turn him, and reel... We go around like this for a few more times, each time he's just far enough out that I can't get him in the net. Each time though, there's a little less oomph behind his dive. About the sixth pass I drag him a bit close before I reach with the net.

HOLY SHIT! HE'S BIGGER THAN THE NET I BROUGHT OUT! I scoop his head up and his tail sticks out a good six inches past the top. I pull him up so I can get the hook out, and have a moment of clarity. He's smart... he's probably been here before... I grab the stringer, and loop it through his mouth and out the gills. Well, he didn't like that at all! I didn't even get the loop closed before he starts thrashing around, the hook come free, and out of the net he popped! The only thing I can do is snap back on the stringer to try to bring him on board. I drop the rod in the other hand and start fumbling for the loop to try to close it.

"THERE! GOTCHA!" I yell as it clicks closed, and then in a moment of sheer triumph, I throw my head back in an absolute primal shout. Then I lay back in the boat, panting for a moment, still holding onto the stringer. Man and fish, still, and calm.

I hear someone on the bank yell out, "Did you lose him?"

In response I hold up my arm and feel the weight of the fish as it comes out of the water. Evidently, I had gathered a crowd because the dock erupts in hoots and hollers. I sit up enough to look over and there's about 15 people lining the dock. I flop back down, and reach up to the motor and turn it on to head back to the dock.

"Why am I not moving?" I think. "Ah, yeah, the anchor."

So I sit up, tie the stringer to a grab handle, turn off the motor, and pull up the anchor and get it in the boat. Back at the dock, after I climb out, and many pats on the back, I finally get a good look at this beautiful catch. This fish should have broken my 6lb test line several times over with the fight it gave.

This is a 1-Foot ruler, on an 18" cutting board.

Spencer Tracy would have been proud Jandre:)
nice trout:)

who loves you baby:)

So I got so carried away about the fishing story on the last page, I forgot to post a real update...

The first to the net!

Next is the now 9 node second tallest.

Third place.

This is an 11 fingered fan... sorry about the focus. They're on both first and second place plants.

I'm really getting worried about this little guy. I'm hanging onto him just in case he's a male, so I can harvest some of the pollen.

Great story Jandre. I'm not into fishing, but the way you described the events really made me feel like I as there with you. That's a nice looking trout!

Plants look nice too btw

So my grow shop called me last week to tell me I had won the weekly drawing for a Hortilux bulb!

I went to pick it up today, and I'll be damned: they actually handed over a brand new EYE Hortilux Enhanced Spectrum SUPER HPS Grow Lamp in the wattage I need for my ballast. Real stand-up guys, I tell you! I don't notice any difference in the picture taking department, but I'm sure the plants will do well, under their new lamp.

YAY! I new hundred-dollar bulb, just for signing the back of my receipts and dropping it in the box every time I'm in. If you work there and see this, thank you! Send me a PM, I'd like to keep in touch with you on here, if that's possible.

Now... as these offer 25% more "blue" light, I will be moving the T5's out and to another project of mine where I am babysitting some plants for an outside grower buddy of mine, until the daytime sun they get is greater than 14 hours. Calendar says that's in May.

You'll love that Hortilux Bulb Jandre. That's what mine were.

I'm hoping so. For a hundred bucks, I can think a lot more to do with the cash. But if they perform better than the bulbs I'm used to, I guess, I won't have a problem shelling out the dough every year for them.

good weed to you Jandre:)
