InTheShed Grows Inside & Out: Jump In Any Time

Monday update on sb's 30-year old Afghani seeds, so gather 'round!

On Saturday it had been 6 days since the seeds went into the jars, so it was time to move onto the next stage. Here were the banana jar ones:

They were stuck to the sides from the moisture, and interestingly, the banana was less brown than if I had left it sitting on the counter for 6 days. :hmmmm:

Anyway, the seeds came out of their respective jars and into their respective bowls. After another 15 minute soak in H2O2 (in case where was any bacteria growing on the banana jar seeds), they got dried and put in distilled water:

and moved into the shoebox on the heat mat at 80º:

About 18 hours later I decided to go with @con's germination method of using damp cotton cleansing pads (rather than paper towel) since my peat puck method probably would have restricted the flow of ethylene to the seeds. Here are the control seeds before they get covered with a second pad:

Into the jar they went:

And the banana seeds went next:

I stood up the shoebox on end and put the jars in, with the temp probe from a multimeter taped down to the bottom:

I covered the hole with tin foil to keep them dark and warm:

They've been sitting like that since Sunday morning. I'll check them tonight to make sure the pads are still damp and continue waiting to see if we can get some tails to emerge. Stay tuned! 📺

In other news, the none of the Candida cuttings I took made it, and neither did the mother plant:

I had ignored it for close to a year without root pruning it, and I waited until it was looking a bit sclerotic when I took the cuttings, so I wasn't hopeful. Anyway, that marks the end of that line of Candida back to my first plant in 2018. On the plus side I have plenty of seeds and I don't need to keep a mother around. If I ever need to flower another I'll just have to start from scratch and hope I end up with one as pretty as the ones @BeezLuiz has going!

Quotes:

Thanks Joe! I'd love to see someone give that a try as well. Anything we can add to the toolbox for germinating stubborn old (and sometimes very expensive) seeds would be great. :thumb:

Not sure about the big one but the ones that fit in the jar were Gala. Either way, the apple didn't seem to make the top of the jar pop when I took it off like the banana did so I decided to stick with bananas for this round.

LOL!

I would imagine that it's similar to doming, but it's interesting that it took a couple of weeks in that environment to show roots. Might have to try that next time. Did it look alive while you waited?
A Shedster experiment 🔬? How long has this been going on? Fingers crossed for popped beans. Seems I remember something about ethylene gas and old seeds. Wishing you n yours all the best Shedster. CL🍀

Otter he has 10 seeds , would have to be the same seed all the way through . Shed if it where me I think 5-6 days then go with the next experiment i read the info you dropped from what i understand ? and it didnt have weed in there but i think your on the right track or maybe a little stronger to start with . Thanks Again !

No change this morning but for the record I did put in a new banana. The first one looked the same but was very soft and the jar didn't pop when I took off the lid.

I'm glad I stepped in time lost more Kandy Kush seeds and forgot you had me use the GA last time to fix the problem. Already started a different batch of seeds for the grow but going to soak the last 2 KK seeds tomorrow and see .
Pics of the cloner in action
Nice to see you starting seeds and the cloner up and running. Can you remind me of what I recommended with the GA3 because I can't recall now.

Also, don't forget to drop a link to your new journal in one of your old threads (and here if you like) because this site isn't as good without a West Hippie journal on the go!
:green_heart:
I don't know when to change over. Are you talking about using the same seeds in the new experiment or new ones or both?
As sb mentioned below, same seeds as I only have 10 to work with.

About 2 weeks since it started with dry seeds and a banana.
Fingers crossed for popped beans.
Thanks Captain!

You remember it because it was from your "I just read something but you have to go find it" post last December. ;)

:thanks: sb! When I'm done with the banana test I'll post up the GA3 info I've found for everyone's perusal.

Was looking for the thread where I got the idea from you but didn't bookmark it so that didn't help at all . I believe i only did 150ppm but took 4 days before a tail popped.
Carefull with that banana I remember @AngryBird one bubble over .

Thanks WH, and I'm glad you posted that instruction sheet (I have the exact same brand) since I have no idea where mine went! I think I'm going to do three batches of three seeds at 500, 250, and 125ppm for a 24-hour soak. Once I get the results of that I'll see if there is a final tweak to be made with the last one.

I’m about to do same ethylene test next run so interested to see how banana peels work for you…

Nothing going on here at the moment (time and focus have been elsewhere), but I can tell you that nothing is happening with the 30 year old seeds in the jars, with or without a banana. I haven't had a chance to mix up the GA3 but I'm hoping that will happen tonight. We'll see!

In the meantime:
Hi Shed
Just catching up a bit, your content is fantastic. I love seeing the experiments and this is a great one.
I wish you well with those seeds
I’ll be watching
Thanks SniperX! I appreciate the support and the eyeballs. :thumb:

Hey Shed , If all fails i am asking you cut into couple of the seeds just to see what is going on in there . Thanks Again
I second this, I scarify my seeds before I soak them. Sounds scarier than it is, I just use a emery board that I bought 3 for 1.⁰⁰ the kind that one would use on their fingernails. I got the idea from Jorge Cervantes medicinal grow bible, between that and my new heat mat I am right up to near %100 I lost four out of a five pack last winter, and I really really hated that. I know that seeds aren't cheap so I really hope that this helps you @smokesbetter and everyone altogether, had no one told me I would not know anything, always share because sharing is caring

Will do, and I plan on getting to the G3 tomorrow. Had a few side effects from my new cholesterol med which has moved the timeline a bit.

Thanks KBuenos! I always shake my seeds in an Altoids tin lined with sandpaper before I drop them in water, and I did sb's 10 as well. And after realizing how hot my heat mat got within a few days of first buying it I turned around and got a @VIVOSUN thermostat to control it. Excellent purchase.

Thanks gang! My body seems to be getting used to it pretty quickly so I'm definitely feeling better today than yesterday. Been feeling a bit flu-ey and draggin', but tonight I took my dog out and did 3,574 steps in 30 minutes. 🐕🚶‍♂️
Happy to hear that you’re feeling better Shedster. Wishing you n yours all the best. CL🍀
