Day 25 and Clones Day 6

Thought it might be an ideal time to show the clones and the plants as they are after 6 days in 12/12 and cloned. Have spoken before about how I record the plant and clone taken, but as always, am trying different things in the cloning process.

I think if you don't, and this is just totally my opinion, you can get bored by following the same routine. Whilst the routine and procedure may have been fine tuned and you know what you are doing, it is always a satisfying experience to see your endeavours in trying something new rewarded.

Spoke to an old mate grower of mine today and he is using a new system for cloning that he calls "close planted". By this, he put 2 clones in each rockwool cube, and allows them to actually encourage each other to form roots. I'm not sure how he has worked this out?, but I am going to try it anyway.

So what I have is now is double branches taken of 3 plants ( No. 1 and 2 and 4)
I have 2 clones of plant 3 ( middle 2) and 1 clone of plant 5. All growing really well and can't see any visible stressing yet.

Plants 1 to 5 closeups

Haven't really shown the VenturaGold up cloes yet so thought I may as well!! Experienced growers will have to excuse the leaves heavy handed nutrient application look as I thump them with nitrogen when they all get the light changed to 12/12. Learnt this "claw" effect prior to pre sexing as a way of guaranteeing a solid nitrogen drink prior to 5-10-10 for 2 weeks then to a 1-8-17.5 for duration of flowering.

Plant 4 has yes been really hammered. For good reason and for experimenting. Have taken the top of this plant and cloned as a test from some information I have been given here about using the top branches of plant as more beneficial for cloning. Plus, I wanted to see how well the strain could be harshly treated in its infancy and pre flowering stage. If it performs well, it is just another feather in the strains cap. If it doesn't well, nothing ventured (sic) nothing gained!!

The leaves unwanted for cloning I dried and had a quick taste smoke of last night and found that even after only 25 days, and only tip leaf, that it was quite a smooth sweet tasting smoke. Am very excited to try the cured buds in November!!

SS,

No air dry, just in the microwave. I know, really locks in the green, but it was just as a bit of a smoko though. The GDP I am smoking tonight is male tips that I let cure like I generally do. It has had 6 days drying and is smoking a treat.

SS,

Ususally, I hang the plant up in full for about 2 weeks until it gets a fairly good drying out. Then I do a bud and kiff trim and place it in newspaper to fully dry. This lasts about 3 days. When it is tinder dry, I then put into jars and let it cure. All of this takes place in a dark shed environment, as light or direct sunlight is the worse thing you can do when drying.

As for my greedy use of the microwave for a quick dry, it is a terrible "green lock in" method but I only really do it for a quick smoke of something. Worst method for drying and would never never ever do this to a proper harvest.

No, no, bro, I was just wondering how you dry the male tips before you smoke them to judge potency, because how you do it affects how they taste and I don't want to re-write your book. Just trying to pick your brain on details because I want to do it the same way.

I know you know how to cure your weed;)

SS,

All good. I was just saying microwave is a terrible dryer. There is nothing worse than when you hear a whizzing sound and look in and the leaf is going up in flames!! LOL

Used to dry ontop quickly on the light shade, but being a greedy little piggy, it took about 1 hour. How do you dry qiuckly for a taste test?

Dank,

The "Hard Cut" is a process I use in determining what the variety is able to withstand and its ability to counteract harsh treatment. If for example, the plant responds really well and grows back thick and with a stronger growth, then genetically, it is a favourable trait worth keeping. Also, by doing this, it allows me to assess the plants tolerance for disease and outdoor growing. (The wind here in Victoria is bullshit strong, I lost 3 male outdoor plants on the weekend 120km hr winds!)

So, whilst it is a really harsh thing to do to any plant, tipping and LST and SCROG growers all are looking for these sort of traits as they really punish their plants in order to achieve their growing goals. To be able to advise them of the plants tolerance levels and resistance is really important in establishing the suitability of a strain for them.

Cannabis though, is a tough little critter......

I've tried using a microwave and a heat gun. With the heat gun, I put whatever I'm drying in a metal strainer.

Both methods produce about the same results. I actually think I prefer the microwave method. I stand there and give 10-second bursts, checking after every burst. Takes a bit more patience that way, but gives me better control of the results.

I've never used the microwave option before, so after reading this I decided to give it a try. Picked a little bud that was only a couple weeks old and nuked it for about a minute. Microwave still smells like bud. It was actually a pretty good smoke! Wasn't harsh at all and I got a real good sativa style buzz off it.

BorntoRun,

I am glad the microwave worked out so well. I find it locks in the greeness (is that a word?) of the bud but still gets you stoned. Hence why it is so good for the taste testing. As for the smell, I then microwave something else after the dry to eat. Thanks for the 5 stars too!!!

Day 29

Not really that much to report at the moment. Clones haven't shown any roots yet and the stretch is still going on with the 5 parents, without any sexing showing either. Have spread pollen across the still yet sexed plants fron the WidowSkunk Male in the Indoor grow journal. I've done this so as to encourage more females, but to also ascertain who is truly male and female. I find doing this has been useful in previous grows as it tricks the plants into more females as they think there is an early flowering boy close by them.

Yeah, it's good to run the microwave a bit afterwards to get rid of the smell, otherwise the next person to use it might wonder what the hell you were cookin', lol.

SS,

So true about the smell. Hope to have some more pictures of the VenturaGold soon, but as there isn't really much happening it seems a bit crazy to post the same pics as yesterday. Am hoping to get some sexing show this week, clones are going really well and am looking to put them into soil by Saturday.
