Lesson in cloning

The most important thing when cloning is making sure all of the equipment being used is as sterile as possible. I use a new blade freshly opened to cut off cuttings. The plastic container used is throughly washed and left to dry. Rockwool is only opened for immediate use and I scrub my hands clean as well.

Whilst I am an organic disciple, when cloning I use manmade nutrients, in particular hydroponic nitrogen fertiliser, as it has no urea base so will not burn the clones. Clonex is my favourite gel to use and the Nitrozyme is fantastic in providing hormones beneficial to root formation.

Identification of clone and clone parent

Day 19 and I am able to start taking clones from 3 of the 5 plants. As a rule I work left to right and back to front. So the 3 plants being cloned are the 3 at the back of the picture. When I put the clones into the rockwool, the same procedure is used, the clones are left to right like the parents. Fairly easy system, there are probably better ways to do it but I find this works for me.

Plants cloned so far are the back 3 in this photo. Below is closeups of branches taken.

Once the branch has been cut, I remove all the leaves except the newest growing tip. I do this to avoid evaporation through the larger leaves but to also encourage the clone to root without the added stress of trying to photosynthesis itself as well.

Below is a picture of just how much leaf is discarded when taking clones.

Finally, we have the clones after being dipped into clonex, placed into the rockwool. The rockwool itself has been pre soaked in the nutrient solution of Hydroponic Nitrogen fertiliser and Nitrozyme. I use 3ml of each to 1ltr of water. Going from left to right, like the parent plants are growing, the clones are now in the grow cupboard, 18hrs light 6 hrs dark per day.

Day 20

Due to the phenominal growth of these plants, I have taken clones, as per yesterdays post, and am now able to move them into the grow room. The clones are still in the cupboard, so I am going to be at least a week early in the breeding programme.

I second, thanks for the informative thread. What is the goal of your breeding program? I've never quite seen a grow like this, and am just curious what you are after. Ok went back and reread, basically you got some bomb ass seeds and you are gonna find the strongest plants and get some more of those bad ass seeds. Make sense now. Very interesting. How long do you figure to accomplish your goal? Seams like it's going quite fast.

Stully,

With breeding I don't think you ever fully achieve your goals as there is always something you want to breed into a strain. My Q1 strain I have been playing around with now for about 15 years, and every now and again when I have a smoke of it, I can taste a plant that was bred into it from years before!

With the VenturaGold, I am looking for potency, as this is important, as I am looking to get a medicinal strain up and running, but knowing me, I really chase flavour more than anything else, so I wouldn't be suprised if this is what I end up with.

Hopefully, I should have an idea of the plant I am going to use as the mother within the next 3 weeks, and for sure in 7 weeks. By this stage, the plant I have chosen will already a big clone and ready to flower. Will make an excellent start to Spring here!

That is always the hope, yet a lot of the time 1 is more than the other.

The B52 I had growing was potent yet it tasted awful. Very strong I am not sure equates a flavoursome taste. Had a grow of Ice that was really tasty and potent, but lacked any real length of time being high, so in a lot of ways, breeding can be a bit of a juggling act at the best of times.

I wish I could get a clone of snottygirl over to you to let you mess around with. I'm going to try and get some feminized seeds going this fall. I've had a hard time getting any of the outdoor plants to go hermie. I'm going to try and just cut one back after harvest and see if will produce some pollen.

Borntorun,

There is a way you can do it. I am not sure if I am spelling this correctly, but if you can get some gilleberic acid and spray one branch, it should encourage male characteristics. Or if you have a spare plant in full you could spray it and have a male. There is also an anti-gilleberic spray that is applied before flowering to encourage all female plants if growing from seed. Again, not sure of my spelling, but if you can get some from a hydro store I would definetly love to have a go of the snottygirl. Especially as we are coming into Spring here and an outdoor grow for me is only 6 weeks away!!

Day 22

Have moved the VenturaGold into the grow room. They have been there for 4 days now and are starting to stretch. The clones are all doing well and I am hoping to start to see sexing in about 6 days. Have included a group shot and a shot from pot height to show the stretch as it happens.

I'm looking into it. Gibberellic Acid, no one around here sells it but a few places online. I've got one plant that I'm trying to stress it out to see if it will go hermie, but so far it seems snottygirl enjoys whips and chains.

Thanks for the spelling correction! I thought I was spelling it totally wrong. If you get some seed then I would be keen to get some that's for sure!!

Have taken more clones today of the remaining 2 plants that I was waiting for to develop longer lower branches. Cloning process is exactly the same as already documented. Have got a total of 10 clones ( 2 per plant). The parent plants themselves are now in the grow room, in 12/12, and have started to stretch after 5 days.

SS,

Genetics are a bit of a secret. The breeder and I are working on a very specific strain and particular type of high. But, it has parentage from Mr Nice, OG Firefox, Ice, Godbud.
The ratio's are the secret!!!
