Icemud's Grow 8.0 - New Intelligent-Gro LED - 2 x IGRO-228 LED - Testing & Review

Re: Icemud's Grow 8.0 - New Intelligent-Gro LED - 2 x IGRO-228 LED - Testing And Revi

Thanks for the great question, toker69. I have also been wondering about the height of the lights.

Is temperature or coverage the limiting factor in how close you can place the lights?

For me the limiting factor is coverage, since my tent is already wider than the lights footprint byy 1/2', in order to get good iradiation near the edges it seems my sweet spot is betweenn 15-20".

To give Gandalf a more complete answer: Ignoring footprint, the next concern isn't heat (you can generally shove your plants right up against the LED and not get HEAT damage) the next concern is IRRADIATION. The frequencies coming out of those lights can nuke your tops if they are too close, depending on how powerful the light is.

Think of it like SUNBURN; it's not the heat, it's the radiation. It's really, really important to stress that this technology is not directly comparable with HID lighting in some very crucial respects!

A lot has to do with the design of the individual light as well, like does it include IR and UV etc.. The I-Gro lights incorporate COB technology, and I don't know how that plays into this issue, but it wouldn't surprise me if that didn't introduce some unique concerns. If you have 5w diodes rather than 3w, the issue of distance from canopy becomes even more critical.

So really, I'd say the distance above canopy is a compromise between footprint, canopy penetration and minimum safe distance. :)

Awesome! :thumb:

How many inches away are the lights from the canopy now?

Ok, so I measured today, right now the lights are exactly 18" from the tops of the canopy.

Hey Boscoe!! Props man on the very detailed answer, thank you for elaborating on the subject. I agree that its a combo of a few things... For me personally, footprint it the largest factor, because as close as I would like to get the lights, I have to make sure the leaves and buds on the tent edges are getting good coverage.

I can't remember who it was, but one of the I-gro users found that I think 8-10" is too close, so about 1' is appropriate for a minimum distance because as you stated, it will cause bleaching, not cause of heat, but Irradiance. :) Great answer Bosco!!! Thanks broski!

Re: Icemud's Grow 8.0 - New Intelligent-Gro LED - 2 x IGRO-228 LED - Testing And Revi

I think the issue is still heat, but of the microwave type, or like Bosco said like a sunburn.

A quote from wikipedia:

"In Radiation, the hotter body loses heat, and the colder body receives heat by means of a process occurring in some intervening medium which does not itself thereby become hot."

particles and waves
act in quantum ways
with cadence, and rhythm
but no sense in it's system
and all we know is part
because lights particles seem smart
when it's waveforms become endowed
within a particulate cloud
our thoughts almost seem projected
any logic, or reason rejected
as those particles collapse
and the waves catch the relapse

Is light a particle or a wave?

Its both, its a photon... A photon is the property of both waves and particles.

No problemo! I'm not a scientist and I'm sure my answer isn't 100% accurate, but the jist of it is correct. :)

I was concerned that Gandalf's question was potentially misleading because he asked about "heat" and I've seen too many people get lousy results from LEDs because they're still going by the old "if you can keep your hand under the light, then it's safe to put your plants that close" meme.

I was having nightmares about people unknowingly frying their green babies! LOL

Great thing about the I-gro (and the reason I bought one) is that if you run out of headroom, you have the option of dialing down the intensity to compensate. :)

So here is a quick update for Day 36 of flowering. As the lights were coming on this morning I gave the girls a little foliar of very light amount of amaze, some carboload, and some cold pressed seaweed.

Other than that just took some photos before the foliar spraying, with and without the lights off...

Enjoy!!

My God...what a response! You are all Fuckin' geniuses!
:circle-of-love:

Seriously, that was a great answer along with some very informative reply's. This is why this thread was the first one that I followed when I joined our merry little band.
:thanks:

Great update Ice! I follow your journals, but this one is nice for me as I'm a week behind and have seen my girls progress in step with your grow like a view into the future. Only a week, but still. :trance:

They look very nice bro.
