Hyena's Never-Ending Adventures In Growing

Hyena, you are a scientist and a master:) This is my favorite Journal of all time...I would like to go swimming in the fields of green with you should you decide to actually dive in. LOL. Great job my friend! JB

Thanks JB! I so appreciate that you are always along for the ride.

My new title is Forest Ranger.

Peace, Hyena

I was curious if you're using less nutrients for double the size/amount of plants? Initially looked like the first HGH run was earlier fading yellow leaves, but the grow two doing the same thing is looking more like low nitrogen? Regardless they are looking great and it's a mild nitrogen deficiency. Maybe crank the lights to 80-90% too?

Highya HM,

Very nice update. Beautiful canopy as always! So, one in the books, the second chunking up nicely, and the third is underway. Yep, you're really doing it! I can just imagine down the road you give up your house and travel to your grow houses to trim, and check, and maintain. Life is sweet!! Cheers

best grow journal ever! I notice tho that in the first location your plants looked definitely better, with perfect leaves without a single spot till the tips...have you wondered why this early yellowing? I also noticed few tips are burned...I'd love to see perfect plants as before

Thanks, DWC and OG...

Not sure yet if it's just a light intensity thing, these lights are insane. I am supplementing with more N to find out. I also cranked all lights to 100% and we will see how that works.

Everything is a learning experience.

Thanks Bode! I must admit I AM thinking about putting up a second grow house...I'm thinking...

As I locked the place and started home, I felt the thought creep in...why not a second location? Man, if I had TWO of these, now we're talking! I was always the kid who thought too big but I couldn't stop thinking about this...and I'm still thinking. Hmmmmm...

This is just a guess, but you're in a 3 bed, 2 bath right now? Maybe try a 3rd tent in that location and try to run them 3 weeks apart?

Would add 1/3 to the bottom line, with little additional ongoing overhead.

Don't get me wrong, I'm along for the ride and it's a fabulous show, just thinking that while you're fine tuning, maybe making more use of available space would be more advantageous. I could see several benefits from just adding a 3rd tent. Would let you experience a heavier work load (increase of 50% over current), managing/timing 3 grows to keep them on track and spaced/timed as best possible, etc. While it would add to the electric/nute/water bill, at least that is small in the grand scheme of another property, which would bring things like more insurance, taxes (blah!), upkeep, maintenance, etc.

Of course some of that can be hired out, if so desired. If the yard isn't super big, $35-$45/wk to get the grass cut/trimmed can be money well spent in terms of time/energy saved. Now you don't want people nosing around, but those lawn companies aren't interested. They want to get on site, cut and trim, and get on to the next lawn. Of course that's assuming the site doesn't reek of that fine sticky icky going on inside.

Seriously though, I know we've discussed security, but outside of remote/video monitoring are simple home security systems. Ones you can install yourself (big plus there) with remote monitoring. You're legal, so that's a big relief there, which does open up options which are not available to a super secret grow.

At the very least, you can buy yard signs and window stickers for most well-known security companies. Combine that with a couple "dummy" cameras (they look real, and have "on" LED's to really sell their authenticity) and that may be a big enough deterrent to potential trouble makers. It's security by obscurity, but it makes it much less attractive to someone looking for an easy target, whether they know what is there or not. (And you certainly don't want someone looking for an easy target, knowing someone isn't there most of the time, and then finding out they hit the jackpot.)

Another option would be adding several 4x4 (or 5x5) tents. One of those lights would rock a space like that, you can get 4 plants in there for a SCROG, and can get creative with things for ventilation purposes. (Think a big main fan, that sucks air from multiple tents, etc.)

Sorry to derail the thread a bit, but your updates and creative ideas always spark my own! :D :D :D

All good points to ponder...

However, I have maxed out the house I'm in. It's a perfect fit for 2 10x10s and a drying closet but no third bedroom. Plus the power would be a limiter even if the space was not.

If I do another location or maybe even several, it would certainly be easier than the first by half. What I'm really weighing is essentially the jump to a full time job if I go beyond here. Not a business I could easily sell so kind of stuck with the whole program for multiple years if I do it. Even a golden goose must be fed.

For the rest of this year at least I probably won't do much more than try to complete two more nice runs and maybe get a little better at this...but thinking.

Peace, Hyena

Thinking and planning is good. Not a thing wrong with that whatsoever. :D

Did you bump the intensity on both tents, or just run #3? If you're looking for fattening up the buddage a bit, have you perused the back building thread from L.A.?

Sounds really, really, really jacked up, but damn if it isn't legit.

Sounds cool and yes it works, about 5 grows ago I did some testing.

Just a mega pain in the ass. Easy for the apical buds; PITA for everything lower, at least at the ridiculous canopy density I have going. The last time I did it wholesale my arms were so sticky and stinky it took 3 days to get all the trich balls off. Maybe a drone...

True enough with your garden size. I bet 100 years from now (probably less for the big commercial side) there will be trim/grow robots that do all of the tid bits for us. :ganjamon:

And what fun would that be? Sticky arms are the ultimate badge of success!

Okay here's another

HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

Well, the Wednesday trip up to the old GH went quite smoothly...it's soooo nice to have this dream down to a single under-two-hour visit per week, outside of harvesting/trimming.

The blooming Phase 2 tent is bloomin' amazing.

Can't take a decent picture of the whole thing anymore so here's a couple views...

This is between three and five weeks away yet it's frosting up something fierce.

Super Bud, Blueberry and White Widow...all coming on strong.

I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out why the premature (in my view) yellowing of certain leaves...

The tallest, and closest to the lights, seem to be the most susceptible. So for awhile I have blamed the intense LEDs, but there are some that don't seem bothered...

So I blame it on the lights AND genetics.

Everyone looks pretty nuggy and the buds are tight.

So all's well in there. Meanwhile, in the Phase 1 tent the new girls are growing.

Here's a week ago:

And today:

Yes they like the new digs.

Some HUGE leaves, I hope the rest of the plant is as big...

And now the first girls that I can Scrog a bit...poking their cute little heads up.

So all good there too. In fact it's all like clockwork. Hard to believe, really. But modern growing equipment plus some hard work is paying off. Most of the credit goes to Mother Nature anyway!

But I am very happy. So happy Wifey and I are going to Las Vegas tomorrow morning for five days of fun in the desert sun. We love LV...greatest town on Earth. We will eat, drink, dance, and hike for miles both on the Strip and in Red Rock Canyon. But in the back of my alcohol and weed-soaked mind will be the kids 2,000 miles away...

Okay, WAY in back. This will be me for sure...

Yes it will. 2 am. Boston Pizza. Del Taco. Anything sweet.

See you next Tuesday.

Peace, Hyena

Happy hump day and here's another

HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

Well, time flies, and it flies a lot faster in Vegas! Five glorious days and four VERY late nights later, it couldn't have been better. By contrast, it was a total bitch to come home...the normally 6-hour total experience took just under 24. TWO broken planes then the pilots timed out...resulting in a miserably boring night in the Dallas-Fort Worth airport...all night...nobody else literally even there from 3-5 a.m...walking around totally alone in such a cavernous place as a major airport terminal was a very Shining-like feeling.
If you get the movie reference here's to you. :bravo: Redrum.

So trip over and safely home...I made my now-weekly trip up to see whassup...

DAT is whassup.

Yeah baby! All girls looking pretty tasty. The predilection of the taller Super Bud strain to yellow very early is expressed again this time around but the buds are fine and plumping up nicely. The Blueberry is looking very good, medium height and all four producing solid and very fragrant buds. The White Widows are all the shorter phenotype so I'm not going to get as much weight as I want most likely but that's okay, the quality will trump that.

Here's each variety, getting very sticky!

Now some nice bud-porny close-ups...for you centerfold fans.

OOh

AAh

I need a paper towel. How about you?

Truth is, I'm wondering if they really will need the same amount of time as the last run. I'm using a bloom booster this time, plus Terpinator and I have all lights full blast, hoping this run will grow even fatter and stickier buds. The outside temperature has dropped now so the tent temps are always fine, mid-70s at the highest. Should be smooth sailing, and I want to really see how big this run can get so no prediction on the total time frame...

BUT, (there's always a but)

Yesterday I dropped the beanz for run number four! Sooooo...I actually have about 3 weeks, maybe 3 1/2, before I have to whack it all and turn the whole thing back to start. I think that's a reasonable amount of time for the final push.

MEANWHILE...

In the almost-forgotten Tent #1 things are humming right along also! One more week produced a nice explosion of the bright green Devil's lettuce...

Oh yeah. All looking super healthy and nearly everybody needs a good scroggin'

I worked, not surprisingly, for over an hour to do this important scrog session, one of three that will make or break the overall productivity of the canopy. Took a lot of care to really defol and reposition every branch of every plant. They seem small but honestly they are alrerady a very complex mass of branches, all ruthlessly competing against their sisters for every available scrap of light. Keep eating, girls. I want you to get fat!

After:

So that went pretty well. Buttoned it all back up and back home I drove, not to see them again for another week. Gosh, the pleasure of having even brief contact with my babies whenever I want is a thing of the past...it's like they're off at college or something. I miss my kids. Like a Dad I try not to think of them every day, no gain in constantly worrying about them, how their classes are going, who they're dating...but who am I kidding? I still do. I'm their Dad.

So now to watch and see how many little ones pop and since these are all seeds from Run #1, the varieties will be Big Bud x White Widow, and Big Bud self-pollinated. NO idea what I will get. But I sure liked the parents so I'm optimistic SOMETHING good has to come up...

I rolled one up but I haven't lit it...smoked a LOT of weed in Las Vegas...

And it's obviously deadly. This is probably a real thing somewhere in Vegas. And where else would it be, you know? Ahhhh, the greatest city in the world never, ever disappoints.

Peace, Hyena
