Hutch's Perpetual Grow Journal

I can’t fault the @stoneotter design. Putting your carbon filter in a bucket with the ducting the way he did it is the way to get it out of the tent. I also like how the whole assembly hangs from 1 nail so there is very little transfer of vibrations from fan to fixture. This helps to keep it quiet.
I hope to get an identical system ready so I can install it when my girls are drying post budwash. I’ll need to repurpose my tent for veg immediately and because some of our harvest will be hanging in a dark space outside the tent I aim to recruit that exhaust to draw passive intake for the tent from the drying space. Some will be low and slow, but some will be air dried like that.

Oh I see it's stoneotter, I thought it was you lol, anyway looking at his setup again I think he is pulling rather than pushing after all, I see there's a fan at the bottom of the orange bucket.

Here's a quote from a random grower on another site who's probably no more knowledgeable than me but I like his answer...

"Either way works and they're are pros and cons to both approaches. Sucking is easier on the fan, especially if you have a wimpy fan, but blowing into a filter is a more efficient use of the carbon.

Air being sucked into a pipe comes mostly from the sides. So, sucking through a filter brings air mostly just through the carbon that is closest to the duct intake. Blowing into a filter 'pressurizes' it forcing air through all of the carbon. Also, a carbon filter downstream of the fan makes a nice muffler. You'll need a more powerful fan to blow through a filter - not a wimpy duct booster.
"

I guess experimentation is the only way to find out so I'll hook it up as planned and see what happens.

Howdy folks, here's the update for October 29...

The veg tent will definitely be hear today so I will be setting that up and I will be up-potting the two photoperiods before installing them in their new home. Ducting should also arrive today so we will be able to finally test the carbon filter/fan arrangement.

That's it for now!

Do you think I'd be better off moving the fan/filter back into the tent, sitting on the floor the way it was with the ducting blowing the air out the top vent.

Its worth exploring the option of putting it outside the tent. You have limited space with it in the tent. I was happy with it outside the tent. I just noticed it appeared to be less efficient and opened up the door for more scent problems.

However, it looks like you have a good fan. I think its worth the shot.

darn! I dislike the fact that when I respond to a post, it doesn't take me to the end to see all responses.

Looks good! It should work well for ya. Removing that kink will help flow too (you mentioned already fixing it).

AK-48 Autoflower Day 10/43 - 40,000 lux - 13" from light - 21.5" tall

The veg tent arrived last night and assembled today, very pleased with the 24"x24"x48" Vivosun. The two plants in solo cups were up-potted to large yogurt containers, probably half gallon per pot. Soil continues to be Promix HP because of its simplicity, ie. no ph. Fed the seedlings 2.5g/gn Megacrop in 1 litre of tap water each.

Looking great!

I may have missed it but is that AK48 from Nirvana? I got a fem growing and looks very similar.

Looking great hutch! Hopefully the filter setup works for you and removes the smell adequately!
Thanks! It seems to be working well, seems like during the day there is no smell in the apartment but around 6:30pm they explode with scent that even I can smell in the living room. So I turn it on for about 4 hours until we hit the sack. Wish I could tell an innocent bystander about the grow so I could get a proper smell test!

Yes, it's from Nirvana and what a lovely plant! Mine is an autoflower, do you have a journal or some pictures?

Not at the moment. I must say, very hardy plant too. I forgot about it as a baby in the back of my tent. It rebounded quick. I will try to get some pics in the coming days.

Here we go for November 1...

Day 44.JPG

Lambs Breath Autoflower Day 2/45 - 30,000 lux - 18" from light - 5.25" tall

I'm calling yesterday Day 1 of flower so we are on our way! This type of training, bending the main stem over to grow vertical, is not for me. At least with autos. It has slowed development and not really achieved much. It is very difficult to check for male flowers and will require defoliation during flowering. Fed her 6 litres of tap water with 5gm/gn Megacrop.

I have noticed there seems to be some yellowing at the tips. This mainly shows up under the lights. I have never seen how plants react to too much light so I'm wondering if this is bleaching? I know tip burn means over-feeding but I'm not sure this is actually "burn". In any case I lowered the plant by 2" so the light is not quite so intense.

Day 45-1.JPG

AK-48 Autoflower Day 12/45 - 46,000 lux - 11" from light - 23.75" tall

Forgot to note that this AK-48 was fed yesterday 7.5 litres tap water to run off with 6gm/gn Megacrop.

Chocolate Haze - Day 16 - 24,800 lux - 21.5" from light - 2.25" tall

No vertical growth as she establishes herself in her new container. She looks healthy and will soon be ready for training. I buried most of the stem with the Phantom Cookies Domina but I couldn't with this CH so it is mostly stem which is not visible in this picture.

Day 16.JPG

Phantom Cookies Domina - Day 16 - 23,000 lux - 23" from light - 1.5" tall

No vertical growth here either but she is a beauty as she settles into her new container. I think that is the 5th node peeking through so I am going to re-read @Dutchman1990's quadding tutorials to begin with the topping in a couple of days or so.

Veg Tent 19-11-01.JPG

Veg tent.

That's all for now. This was yesterday's report so I'll be posting another this afternoon to catch up. This journalling process has turned out to be a fantastic resource for my own growing and I highly recommend the process to anyone starting out.

Everything's looking great,Hutch !
You're going to like the Quad process- easy to do,and sooo productive!

Leaf tip discolouration clearly visible under lights, why is that?

@BudgetLED, do you think I should raise the lights to keep them 12" from plant? How close is safe?

Hey carcass, what do you think is causing the yellowing on the tips of the new growth on my Lambs Breath? You can see the first picture in today's update. Looking around the web I see possibly over-watering, over-feeding, under-feeding, sleeping in too late, etc.
