Homer's Legal 4-Plant Max Perpetual Minimalist Garden In Ontario

Homer...I drop my seeds into soil as soon as it cracks...is there a reason to wait for the taproot to grow?

I also used to drop my seeds into soil as soon as they cracked too but I had a whole slew of bad Pre-98 seeds and several of them did crack but then didn't break ground so I would waste four or five days wondering if the damn things were going to come up.

I had one that got a little tail like in my 1 one day photo and it just stayed with that size taproot for a couple of days and when I planted it, it didn't come up so now I like to watch them for a couple of days to see how vigorous they are. The way this Bruce Banner got such rapid taproot growth on day three I am pretty certain it will come up and I won't waste several days waiting.

I don't know if I really gain much this way but at least I am seeing the seed and how viable it is instead of just wondering with it underground.

My Bruce Banner had an impressive spirt of growth today on the 3rd day which was encouraging so I planted her in her 10-gallon pot. It's out of my hands now and all I can do is wait.

I appreciate the sentiment but if anything I am the master of listening to folks who know a lot more than me. :high-five:

There are fewer here than you think. You've come a very long way in a relatively short time.

Your words mean a lot especially coming from a crusty Old Salt who isn’t exactly known for effusive outbursts, LOL. ;) Thanks buddy.

I flipped my Gorilla Glue to flower mode today so I gave the bottom branchs a good trimming. I have no proof but my intuition is that defoliating at the beginning a flower does more harm than good because the plant exerts its energy growing leaves instead of bud so I only remove the lower branches that don't get to the canopy because I am trying to cut down on the amount of useless flarf buds which take forever to trim and are mostly useless and not worth the bother.

My main stalk seems to be getting close to 7/8 of an inch so I am pretty sure it will end up being over an inch by harvest time.

I don't bother trimming them too much. I just squish them to get the rosin.

I am tempted to squish but I can't bring myself to spend the cash on heating plates. I wonder what the recovery percentage is compared to other methods of extraction?

Like other methods the recovery depends on the source material. I get 15 - 20%, others have gotten as much as 25%. Rick Simpson got about 60ml RSO from a lb of dried flower, or about 13%. RSO has a specific gravity around 1.0, or weighs close to 1gm /ml. That comparison needs to be taken with a grain of salt, as when Rick was making his extract the potency of flower was generally lower.

Yes, I spent close to $1K on my press and accessories. It costs me about $1.90 for the bags, and $0.70 in parchment to press the rosin from an ounce of dried flower. That's about $42 per lb. I can press 1lb flower in 6hrs.

The minimum cost of a recovery pot still is about $220. The cost of high proof alcohol is about $90 per liter. With recovery, you'd lose about 2-3 liters per lb of dried flower. You could only distill about 1/3 of a 1 lb batch of flower at a time, so it would take roughly 14-16 hrs. If you make your own high proof ethanol, the costs would be about the same as pressing rosin. A reflux column is needed to get the needed high proof ethanol in a single pass. The flute column stills I recommend start at around $1500 USD + shipping and taxes.

Note that these figures are for Canada. Everclear is not generally available here.

15 to 20% recovery is pretty impressive considering most strains are under 20% so it sounds like you are getting most of the rosin. I’m not surprised Rick Simpson is only getting about 13% because when I smoked some of the bud I had washed with alcohol it still had a kick to it so I assumed a lot was left behind. I was thinking I should weigh my bud after I decarb it and then again after I wash it once the alcohol evaporates and I heated it up again to make sure it is totally dry and I would think that would give me a pretty good idea of what percentage I extracted.

Even if I’m only getting 13% doing alcohol washes instead of 15 to 20% squishing I can live with that because I grow a lot more than I need. I would have to do a lot of pressing to justify $1K. I actually originally made a 1 ½ inch column reflux still with a 5-gallon pot but a few years ago I made a 3 inch one with a 20-gallon pot for spirit runs but I also have a stripping still with a 200 L pot. I get that 200 L pot run to about 45% then into my column still down to 95% and I end up with about 5 gallons so I haven’t had to do any runs in about two years because it lasted me that long with lots left but I think this year I’ll do a run so I can use all the alcohol I want in my cannabis washes. At some point, I may rig up some kind of recovery still.

Instructions make a big deal about only washing your bud in alcohol for about three minutes to avoid chlorophyll but my recent test samples were five minutes, one hour and 17 hours and I didn’t notice much more chlorophyll in the 17 hour one. People also recommend putting the alcohol in the freezer but with only 13% recovery and not a lot of chlorophyll, I’m thinking of actually heating my alcohol as an experiment to see if I can increase my extraction yields.

Anyway thanks for the info Old Salt. That book you recommended is guaranteed to arrive by tomorrow so I don’t think I will do any extractions till I give it a good gander.

I had a pleasant surprise when lights came on this afternoon. Bruce Banner has broken ground!!! She is wearing her shell as a hat but plants are so delicate at this stage I am going to wait till tomorrow before I remove it hoping she can shirk it off herself.

Nice image and presentation Homer. You've got a good eye. Did you ever consider entering the Seedsman contests?

Thanks, Old Salt. I had never heard of Seedman contests so I had a look at the contest page on their site and it said to enter contests to go to their Facebook or Instagram sites but I got rid of my FB and never had Instagram so it isn't meant to be.

That book arrived today you suggested to me and I was surprised how thick it was at almost 300 pages because I expected it to be a rather brief how-to manual; it should be interesting. It is in a 3-day quarantine for now.

@Homer Simpson ,

the contest is Here on the forum, there are 2 of them and as far as I know there is still room for more growers

Thanks, Celt but I think Old Salt was talking about photo contests. Had a look at the link but since I grow only 2 to 4 plants at a time I have my grow list planned for a while into the future.

It looks like they're not running it this year. They had seasonal photo contests, and an annual one. the prizes were impressive.

Homer...looks like a great inspiration poster...needs a great caption and you have the edit ware. I was listening to some REO Speedwagon Live during watering last week...I would suggest “Keep A Pushin”...might have the song name wrong....right idea. Looks great.

I would not doubt if not running it this year is due to the virus. Thanks for the heads up Old Salt. I will keep my eye out to see if they start them up again.

I looked up the song by REO and it is Keep Pushin' so there you go. Use it any way you like. Cool idea!
