HID Grow - Revenge of the Kittens

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Hey there CriMson,

I saw that you asked about cloning into soil in Spike's journal...his method sounds very similar to mine, and mine was based somewhat on another 420 member's method...here are links to my and dfw-guy's cloning methods if you are interested in additional info. Hope you don't mind someone with much less growing experience attempting to toss a little help your way. :)

I'm new to your journal, looks like a good one but I lack the time to get myself caught up on it at the moment...I'm subbed now and will give it a better read when I can!

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

you get a better qty. on the small plants than I do thats for sure.:bravo:

I think it's just in the light bro, you use much better genetics and nutes than I have been.. Although, this round I'm flowering with Tiger Bloom so we'll see how that influences my yield.

K2 are you going to continue on here with the 2 new gals you got.:nicethread:

I guess I could just post here with updates.. I don't have the same privacy at work due to expansion so it's hard to get time to process pics but I will certainty post up some updates.

Stay tuned for the next post.

Thanks for those links man, I've been having a hard time finding info, everything I've been finding deals with hydro or other methods I just can't justify using as it won't fit seamlessly into my current setup and flow.

I wouldn't call myself a very experienced grower, with only one decent harvest under my belt. We're all newbies at heart. I came to 420 never being able to sprout a seed. Now I'm cloning plants and looking into breeding, so I'm open to any suggestions anybody has.

Definitely check out this journal, I got lucky and grew some nice plants. If anything, there are some nice pics spread throughout the journal to keep you amused for a few minutes.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

So what's up guys.. Long time readers, new comers, lets all start out by passing this around :ganjamon:

I will begin by giving a very brief smoke report of the kushberry strain.. I only grew 4 plants on 12/12 HPS and they finished up around 12" each.. Only yielded about an ounce combined, but the plants were nothing to be proud of. Node spacing was horrible and plant height didn't help the matter. The bud on the other hand was AMAZING. Wow, I wouldn't stop smoking this. The taste was very fruity and the high was a multiple hour intense ride where you feel like your melting into whatever you're sitting in. Great stuff.

I've been sitting low since last harvest just smokin and chillin.. Ended up smoking like 90% of my last harvest.. I will admit, I smoke a bit too much, but when you're sitting around with 9 full jars of weed, I'm sure you would be rollin fat blunts up all day too :grinjoint:

If I could go back in time, I would do it the same lol.

Anyway, I made the mistake of waiting a month before starting a new grow, so I'm a bit behind schedule. I started 4 more of the kushberries, which is pretty much the end of my seed stash of them, and these seeds weren't the greatest looking.. I got 4 of them in the ground, and they have been in veg for about 3 weeks now. They are pretty much the same height ranging from 11-14" I have 2 that are showing female preflowers and 2 that aren't showing, but based on my prior experience, I have a strong feeling they will be male. So knowing this, and knowing that I can't get by on only 2 plants, I threw 6 more beans in the ground that I had made off this last harvest. It's all bagseed, but the seeds I saved were from the best, most potent mother. These are still in the ground and haven't shown their face yet, so it's a waiting game.

This brings my total plant count to 10.. But we're not done yet..

I cloned the 2 plants that are showing lady parts last night, took 2 clones from each. I used rooting powder and jiffy cubes, then planted them directly into the soil. It's my first time trying this, so I will see how my results go. I've not seen anyone use this exact method, as it was mainly just an experiment on my part, but if it works, I have found my new hobby :)

So, the overall plant count right now is 14, with 2 most likely going to be pulled in the next few days (pissed about that as I just transplanted them into 3 gallon pots.. Nice waste of soil.)

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Hey K2 1 of my little dirt clones is showing new growth in 11 days that ain't bad my friend, just thought you might like the info in case it can help with
your experiment.:morenutes::peacetwo:

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

that's good news bro. I went down last night and all the cuttings look the same. They're standing up no problem. I haven't watered them as the soil is still pretty wet.. I'm sure the pucks will keep the soil fairly moist as I was hoping since I can't be near the plants too often during the day.

I pulled the 2 possible males this morning so I don't have to change the light schedule to flower them.. They're just sitting in the dark in another room. I decided to pull them as I can't veg them any longer, they grow an inch a day and are at 13-14" already.. Last time I had plants veg that big, I ended up not being able to raise my light any more and I'm sure the lower buds were fluffy for that very reason, the light was too far away from them..

The 2 ladies are 11 and 12" so I will give them another day and probably pull them from the room for 12 hrs each day for the next 3 weeks.. It's a pain in the ass, but what can you do with limited resources? After next harvest I will be setting up a veg room and a male cab because I want to start collecting pollen, and I have these white widow seeds coming, so I would like to stock up on those.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

thanks dude, It's always great for us to get together and throw ideas around. That's how we get better at growing :morenutes:

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

not much of an update. Plants are going strong, all 6 seedlings have broken soil and are growing rapidly. The cuttings are still doing well, no wilting or discoloring happening yet.

The 2 biggest are still being pulled for 12 hrs each day.. no signs of sex yet. I'm hoping they're not indeed males.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

update:

all 4 plants are female.. So, I'm a bit over my head right now as I panicked and started 4 clones and 6 new seedlings to compensate for lack of female plants.. Well, now I'm running out of room so I think I will just keep the seedlings in the smaller pots and get them SOG style.. The clones I want to grow for a while to preserve the strain.. I'll veg the best one as a mother and just flower the other 3 when they're about a foot tall.

I'm contemplating getting a T5 setup for vegging.. I ran some calculations and it will actually save me like $20 a month running a perpetual garden with HPS @ 12/12 and T5 running @ 24/0.

I've been giving the big ones a dose of tiger bloom every other watering, and holy smoke is this stuff good.. I'm only giving them 2tsp / gal and they are just loving it. I love this stuff, I'll have to try some good nutes for veg and see how much faster they grow. These are by far my best plants grown to date. I will snap some pics when i get new batteries for my camera. These plants are forming the thickest hairs on the preflowers and the preflower calyxes are already getting fat, i love it..

I'm pretty much out of smoke, but it's good as i need to reset my tolerance..

Target harvest time is around end of September, maybe a week before. Last time I grew this strain, it finished up fairly early (around 6-7 weeks).

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

congrats on all girls, will be watching for pictures.I've been using fox farms in hempy buckets according to the schedule. And the three i harvested (ffof). The soil plants did ok got almost 3oz per plant. The hempys seem not to like fox farms as much,i think im going to switch to the 400w hps, mabe they will fatten up.:reading420magazine:

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

thanks bro. I didn't really like the ocean forest in the couple runs i used it for.. Although, I didn't really like the happy frog all in itself either, so I think I found a sweet mix, about 60% happy frog, 40% OF. I got a little over 3z per plant last time around just using shitty nutes, so I'm aiming for smaller plants this time and the same yield, but trying to just get my quality even better. My last round with the kushberries was 12/12 from seed under the HPS with no nutes the entire cycle.. I'm curious to see what kind of mystical resin the tiger bloom helps to pump out lol

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

Hey bro, try a mixture of Sunshine Mix or ProMix with your OF. We are using a 75% Sunshine Mix and 25% FFOF. Threw in 5 ozs(by weight) of OrganiCare Pure per 5 gallon bucket. Give nutes as you normally would and your plants will rock. We haven't finished building the dividing wall in our room yet, have to wait until lights come on to work in there...don't want no more hermies. We bought an A/C unit that also dehumidifies and has a timer on it..thinking 15,000 btu. Window unit that keeps the room between 75 and 79 degrees with 53% relative humidity. Keep up the great work brother.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

hey GMT, do you see hermies pop up by fucked up light cycles? I'm trying to see if it's worth salvaging this one plant. It's a beautiful plant, growing almost the best of the 4 and I noticed last night along with the hairs, there are balls at id say 60% of the bud sites.. I'm thinking it's from pulling the plants in and out of the room every day and possible light leaks or small periods of light from someone being down there for a couple of minutes.. It's the only plant thats throwing balls, but I couldn't stop thinking about it last night to the point i had a hard time sleeping.

This morning I changed the light to 12/12 and pulled that plant out of the room.. I'm thinking I should just chop it down as I don't want to chance ruining the rest of my crop (although some seeds of this strain would be nice, I really don't want seeded weed this time around.)

Anyway, coming back to my question, the reason I ask is because the balls are in early development.. Have you noticed any plants that show hermie balls in the first couple of weeks into flower, and then when everything is fine tuned and they're no longer stressed, as it should be with the lights, do they go away, or will the plant still push out balls? I wouldn't mind picking all of these off if there was a chance I could still get a good plant out of it. I'm just glad my clones weren't from that plant lol

The sad thing is, I have the 4 clones which I think are rooted (at least 3 of them seem to be) and 6 new seedlings which are on their 4th node.. Changing the light to 12/12 means these wont get much of a veg time.. I really wish I had that T5 now, but what can you do? I'd rather have 3 solid plants than a bunch of seeded weed. Live and learn.. Out of all the 8 plants I grew from this strain, this is the only one that showed any male traits, so I can't complain too much I guess lol.

Re: CriMson's HID Grow- Revenge of the Kittens

alright after a lot of thinking I figured out what I'm going to do and what is the best return on investment.. I chopped the hermie last night and inspected the other 3 plants for balls.. They all check out just fine. I noticed the small balls that formed on the hermie did already have powder in them, but I don't think the pollen is mature yet.. Even if it was, I took preventative measures by not touching or going near the other plants until i had changed and washed my arms real good. The ladies are too early on the get pollinated but I wanted to just take the precaution, you never know what can happen..

As a solution to my dilemma, I think I'm gonna go get a 110w T5 tonight for vegging clones and seedlings. This way I can take the clones and seedlings out of the 12/12 and veg them for a few more weeks until they're decent size, then flower them. HTG has the T5 for like $70 so that is a steal. I can definitely get a perpetual system going this way- Take 4 clones every 2 weeks and then be harvesting 10-15z every 2 weeks. With those numbers, I could smoke an ounce a day and still have leftovers.

Okay, now I'm just being a weed glutton :lot-o-toke:
