Hempy Headquarters

I’m working my way through from the beginning of the thread, I’m seeing a lot of different nutes thrown around.

What nutes have been getting people the best results recently?

Has anyone tried GH Flora Trio Grow/Micro/Bloom?

GH trio will work. As stated previously, I use MegaCrop, which is very easy and works fantastically. Check out the link in my previous post.

I’ve read up to page 57 while also going down tons of rabbit holes and journals “I like reading/learning vs ever leaving the house and talking to humans in rl”, I’ve taken notes but I have not retained it all just yet so sorry if some of the answers to these questions should be obvious at this point

Part 1.

Questions 4/7:

1. Is there actually an advantage for the plant to start in a solo cup? I’m worried about the stress of transplanting and stress of becoming root bound and if it’s better to start the seedling in the final container.

2. Would it be better to germ then place in a rapid rooter in a solo cup of 100% perlite #2, get some roots + growth, then transplant into its final container of 100% perlite #3 or #4?

3. how frequently do I water the seedling and at what point do I decrease frequency? I read once to twice a day every day as a seedling, 10% run off, then decrease frequency to once a day every two days when it’s officially in veg?

4. How do I judge the needed depth vs diameter of a hempy container? I’ve decided on a 7 gallon because of the strain, and desired veg and flower times will not be rushed to hopefully get optimal quality. However I’m finding there are not a lot of options out there for a 7 gallon container, maybe I’m not being creative enough.

Apologies for being a noob, cheers if you read all this.

Mention my name and bring me out of my slumber.... idunnno.... I was pretty comfortable keepin my head low.
Meh... questions generally deserve answers, and that's kinda what keeps the wheels turnin 'round here.

I never found the need. Just put your rooted baby into the medium and give her more frequent waterings until the roots hit the res.

2. Would it be better to germ then place in a rapid rooter in a solo cup of 100% perlite #2, get some roots + growth, then transplant into its final container of 100% perlite #3 or #4?

I'm a fan of clones. Every now and then I play with a seed, but I'll let others hit this one.

3. how frequently do I water the seedling and at what point do I decrease frequency? I read once to twice a day every day as a seedling, 10% run off, then decrease frequency to once a day every two days when it’s officially in veg?

To some extent, this depends on the container you're in (specifically height). Shorter pots will just naturally keep the top moister (teehee.... moister! sounds vaguely erotic). In my experience, pot height needs to stay at 1ft or less. The wicking effect can only fight gravity so much, and 1ft seems to be the limit.
You really can't over water the perlite hempy configuration. The perlite will hold "X" amount of water and it's constantly wicked up from the bottom, so the actual moisture level in the medium never changes as long as things don't completely dry out.
Again, the main point here is that it's physically impossible to overwater a perlite hempy, unless your drain hole gets plugged up.

See previous 1ft words.
I grew in a very warm world with 6" round tubes that were 1ft high. Tried many (SO many!) other sized configurations but was never able to increase root ball size by adding height. 5gals are about 1ft tall, but I never saw the size boost one would suspect when going from 1.5gal pot to a 5gal pot.
Another major issue you'll encounter is plant stability. The perlite doesn't give you much root mass holding power and your plant will probably tip. You can support it with wires or ropes, but you'll need to plan for it in your grow space. I usually used thick wires (10 gauge to be exact) run thru holes drilled in the top of the pots providing the support from below rather than hanging wires.

Why not dip your toes into the perlite hempy world by starting with an easy 2L soda bottle grow?

Has anyone found a solution to preventing perlite blockage/Leakage/Buildup at the drainage hole? I saw a image of a strainer adaption but do not know if this is common or has drawbacks.

Again... been there, done that. Tried all sorts of hole sizes and screening methods.
Bad JuJu baby.... trust us here. Stay with a plain old hole. The perlite will settle quickly and no longer come out when watering. One plugged drain hole will teach you very quickly about the absolute need to keep the drainage clear and simple to observe. If your hole clogs with perlite as you water, just poke it with a toothpick or similar device.... it's super simple and the upgrades can cause blockage issues you can't see with your eyeball.
Stay with the toothpick! Trust us.... we're just trying to save you from hitting that pothole along your journey.

Questions 4/7:

1. Is there actually an advantage for the plant to start in a solo cup? I’m worried about the stress of transplanting and stress of becoming root bound and if it’s better to start the seedling in the final container. Not really necessary. You can germ in a rapid rooter, and place into the top of the perlite once you see roots.

2. Would it be better to germ then place in a rapid rooter in a solo cup of 100% perlite #2, get some roots + growth, then transplant into its final container of 100% perlite #3 or #4? :thumb: (See #1 - solo cup not needed)

3. how frequently do I water the seedling and at what point do I decrease frequency? I read once to twice a day every day as a seedling, 10% run off, then decrease frequency to once a day every two days when it’s officially in veg? I like frequent watering/fertigation. Brings fresh air in - flushes out the stale. As Tead said, you can’t overwater a perlite hempy.

Again, as Tead said, I wouldn’t go over 12” high. I‘ve found that a 2 gallon bucket (from Dollar Store) works well for an Auto, or a Photo with a 5-6 week veg before flip. If you need more stability, you can put in some clean gravel below the hole.

Apologies for being a noob, cheers if you read all this. No apologies necessary. Have fun! :surf:

If I am using a 5 gal from seed is there a ratio of water to gallon that I go by? Water like twice a day then move to once day to be safe, understanding that I can't over water? Trying to have it all on paper so I feel better about it in the beginning.

Medicine supply, I need a specific strain and in quantity so I am planning on doing two plants scrog in a 4x4, hempy. Do you have pictures of how you supported your plants?

so I am planning on doing two plants scrog in a 4x4, hempy. Do you have pictures of how you supported your plants?

Ahhhh yes... 4x4 scrog grow will be needing lots of supports.

Easy enough.... I just drilled 1/4in holes around the top of the pot and hooked stiff electrical wires (10 gauge) thru the holes and up to the plant where needed.

Do I really gotta go diggin for a photo of a pot with 1/4 inch holes around the top?
Meh! You asked for it! If you make me work, I'll bury you in photos! Plus... there will be many sarcastic remarks.... because I'm just plain uncultured and crude!

This was an outdoor hempy test. The wire was there to support the young one in the wind and rain.

One of the 1/4 in holes in a pot. It's a closeup because one can't truly appreciate a drilled hole without a good close look.

Just plants. Vegging ones to be exact

Look at all those 6L hempy tubes. I bet there are some wires in there somewhere.

Wow... this is an old one!

Hey! I see a support wire in there!

This one just made me laugh as I was looking thru my gallery.

Sometimes you can use a tomato cage.

Need any spare tubes? I got a sea of them I never use anymore. Bring a pickup... this is just some.

if it were you doing a scrog hempy 4x4 what would your ideal support system look like under the canopy?

If you were starting out in a 5 gallon how often would you water until the roots hit and then how would you adjust frequency once it's feeding from the rez?

I like to fertigate a couple times a day, no matter the age, just because I believe fresh air is the key to vigorous growth. The hempy reservoir provides a safety net for when I can’t be there.

But if I wanted to take a minimalist approach, I would fertigate no less than every 3 days until the roots hit the reservoir (remember, perlite wicks, so the roots will stay moist as long as there is something in the reservoir), then use the lift tek to determine when the reservoir is nearly empty, before fertigating again. During flowering, you might be fertigating daily (or more often), depending on the size of your reservoir.

I thought this was interesting..

I did learn something that I'm going to employ next grow:
Water as little as possible during the 7-10 day period where the roots are seeking water. I watered during that time to make the plants look healthy...2-3 times per day!

While my roots did indeed find the bottom, I believe my root structure would be more stable had I starved them just a bit.

And how things changed for the current king of LOS.. LOL
At this point in time, I don't see myself using anything but Hempys. I may rig up a better method of watering, however, just to save some time.

So funny. I tried to speak with him once about that issue. He seemed uninterested in sharing and more interested in talking about his current gig.

He was one of the reasons I dipped my toes into hempy pots. I must tip my hat. We did some learnin together.
It's best to keep in mind that his experiments were mostly 5gal based... not the smaller size I settled into. The watering cycle on a 5gal might well be 5-7 days until they get big an pull much more from the res, but you should always be able to get 3 days out of one.

what do you mean by lift technique? I don’t know that I’ve read a way to check what’s left in the reservoir.
