Hempy Headquarters

Am new to hempy and I bought perlite with .07 .07 .07 slow release nutes. So far so good. pH well water at 5.8 is all they are getting. Plus the hot perlite.
Glad my bagsseds laugh at me when I try to give then to hot a mix. Holding true with their clones so far.
When should I start giving them nutes? They are two weeks old now.

You should feed, since perlite doesn't offer any nutes. Start with light dose. 1/4 of recommended.

But this perlite has nutrients added, and I for one don’t have any idea how long it’ll feed the clones. If it were me Travis I’d watch the clones for signs of stress and start to feed them then. If you start feeding them now they may balk.

I just checked again because I wanted to be sure I don't spread misinformation. It's super soil that's not recommended because they are too heavy and hold too much moisture. Thanks again

I recall reading that coco was expressly discouraged GreenThunder. I’d check again before starting. I know Brix was planning to use coco and after researching he went with soil.

You'd have liked the old "Lucas formula" style grows.

Tried it. Didn’t work for me.

Maybe we're not talking about the same system? The FAQ on the octopot site doesn't discourage coco. Or maybe there's conflicting info elsewhere. I always research before starting but I don't read everything out there. I only wanted to know if I could use coco with the octopot (or similar diy system) and I was satisfied with the answer on their FAQ page.

If I can get a couple seeds to germinate, maybe we'll find out.... I used a mix of coco, peat, and perlite

Not long; such nutrient levels are typically referred to as "starter nutrients." Elevated temperatures and being pretty heavy-handed on the watering would probably poof them even quicker.

Yeah, it has been bandied about for years as kind of a "one size fits all" solution - and we all know that "one size fits all" often... doesn't. Different strains do have some variance in their nutrient requirements, and one's environment / growing conditions can further affect this.

Also, might this have taken place back when you were using less powerful lighting? I recall that there was a lesser amount (don't remember the exact numbers, blindly using only one component of a three-part set and using the same amount regardless of the plant's actual needs is not really my kind of thing) being recommended for those who were. At a guess, CFLs and the like, because junk LED panels hadn't gotten quite so popular back then ;) . I remember that some folks got confused and thought that they were supposed to use the one recommendation for the vegetative growth period and the other for the flowering period  .

Cool! Coco fiber supports more life if you're playing with organics. Thanks for the share. What you witnessed was my relative ignorance of the system. I'm not growing with it, my host is. May you show us how successful coco can be. :battingeyelashes:

Expectation determines outcome my friend. Of course you'll get the seeds to germinate. :green_heart:

I wanted to share my humidifier solution for small grows on a budget. It works best with your extraction fan turned down a bit. I bought the reptile fogger puck on the river for like $15. I bought the aluminum one but there are cheaper plastic version.
I cut a float made of styro to fit the bucket and to hold a party cup in the middle. The puck needs to be 1-3cm under the waterline to work best. Threaded a tube thru the lid of a one gallon bucket and rigged an airflow vent to blow the fog out with my circulation fan.
RH here in the winter dips into low numbers. 4 days ago it was 31% Too low, even for flower. Got my puck yesterday and my veg tent is now sitting at 48% and if i turn my out fan down more i could get it higher if i wanted to. Works for me.
I tried wet towels, bowls of water and big humidifiers that ate up too much tent space. This thing works well and costs almost nothing.

I would kill for 31% rh. Where I am at my indoor grow commonly sees rh at 15% in the summer, this time of year it seems to be running around 30-40% when it rains, but then down to the mid 20s when it doesnt. Gotta love the inland northwest. Yesterday I woke up to blinding sunshine and heavy rain

yeah i'm seeing around 25 - 30% max right now in veg. just monitoring as i don't see any gains by adding humidity right now. i could raise it by simply putting a timer on the extractor fan. it would also add odour and spike temps a bit, i have head room for both tho.

i'm not sure humidity is as big a thing in northern winter grows, but i really have no evidence either way.

Hey guys! Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. So I'm about to get this started, so effing stoked, ha. Anyways, I've decided to go the hempy route. Love the simplicity of it. I'm sure I'll have numerous questions to ask, already have and so many here have been so kind to help, I appreciate it immensely. My question this morning in here is I'm about to drop some seeds in solo cups filled with perlite, a lil coco on top because I read in another thread that there needs to be a bit of darkness on top, if that makes sense. In any case I understand that seedlings won't be needing nutes at first because they'll already have what they need to get started. But should I pre soak the cups with a light nute feeding before dropping the seed or should I just wait until the seedling's tell me they need something? Thanks again everyone, I look forward to sharing this journey with you all!

I'm sure there will be many options for u, here is mine

Soak the perlite in RO water, I don't use Coco
I do the water and paper towels germ, but have germ straight into perlite

Mist or water till they pop, and at 2nd set of leaves 1/4 nut watering couple times a day till they hit the reservoir

Easy peasy

Thanks Chris! When you start the seeds in hempy do you plug or tape up the hole until the seed pops, or should I just leave the hole unobstructed?
