Heirloom's A Little Bit Of Everything - 2016 Journal

I have wondered if I can actually do that. I wpuld prefer diatomaceous earth over any pesticide. Can I really sprinkle it over the crops?
This is the one I use

So much to learn...so many journals to follow.

You don't want to sprinkle it so much as "poof" it on. Get a puffer applicator sold to get this material into walls and crevasses. It's effective in that regard against bedbugs, in fact it's the only thing that will kill them consistently, but you have to poof it in and around.

DE is really the microscopic fossilized skeletal remains of tiny earthlings. Think about it for a minute. If you sprinkle it you run the risk of layering it in such a manner that the critters your trying to ward off can gingerly skip across the boney field. "Poof" it in and you create an impassable area that'll scratch the hell out of the exoskeletons of the invading insects and cause them to desiccate.

I'm typically tolerant of smaller earthlings, but if I'm going to use a product as effective as DE I'm going to make sure I'm not wasting the effort. Of course the DE is an excellent silica addition to the garden, so nothing's truly wasted.

Yes we brought a poor for it....had to put some rice in there to keep it from clogging. We use it like that on the veggies and only at the base from time time on the cannabis plants.
Can I use this in flower?

So much to learn...so many journals to follow.

Yes, you can. You'll be washing the buds at harvest anyway, right? The DE is nothing to be concerned with. Can't hurt the plants at all, just the critters.

That is a lot of questions, but OMG, are you asking them in the right place or what? :laughtwo: quite an auspicious plan, and one Heriloom is very qualified to answer. I just wanted to encourage the Rosemary plantings. It's hard to come up with a more overpoweringly companion planting than this fragrant herb. Once the girls hit full bloom though, nothing will cover the smell.
And boy do I need to find a way to cover the smell!!!!!!!

Mornin' baby. Sometimes life sucks, and then you have to just keep going until it gets better.

:hugs::hugs::hugs::hugs::hugs:

It always gets better.

I believe the DE loses effectiveness when it gets wet, so needs to be replaced after a rain, etc.

Yes it does. Even more reason to poof it on instead of sprinkling.

I am certain that a standard application process of DE is to make a thin slurry with water. Certainly it can be washed away after a rain. Sometimes the slurry is applied to tree trunks to protect from borers. While water is the universal solvent, it's not likely to break down DE for a few years.

Yes.

I opted to use mine as a liquid spray by mixing 4 tbls. of Diamo Earth to one gallon of water, then spray a good coating on the top and undersides of the leaves. Then wait for it to dry.
I didn't like the dusting of them, too windy here and sprinkling or poofing just blows away with the wind.
I found the spray trick to be something I'll keep doing. I don't see near as many critters on my plants this year as I did last year.
Waste little that way too.

Also, a great poofer is one of those cheap dollar store plastic ketchup bottles. For picnics and such. :)

Edit: I still dust some around the top of the soil in the pots, dry.

:)

Just to be clear, when I read up on this wet spray method it was made clear that it is not effective while it's wet. It has to dry first. The coverage I get on the leaves is so much better with the spray method.

Ditto from me Heirloom! :circle-of-love:

Magic Man, you gave me an idea about the slurry with DE. I'm going to make one up and apply it to some crevices that ants are using to get into my Folks house. Maybe make it more of a paste so it will stick in the crevices. We'll see if it helps.

:thanks:

Hi guys.

Just a little break from forum life. I HAVE been up off my butt, lol. Had a severe storm hit me and did some plant damage and made branches REALLY heavy. Had some joint knuckles twist etc. Stupid me didn't make support structures in time. So we are starting that today. Will post up a few 'overall' pics today.

But first, Lilred, you get a post all to yourself....
