Haight Solid State vs. H.G.LED

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Hi Sun I've been reading through this journal once again refreshing my memory of everything you've been doing. I ended up with a question for you.
Like most questions people ask, I have already have an answer in my mind and this is just to make sure.
Will the Hydroton have the same benefits in an out door grow? Looking at it your girls, it almost seems like it might help to discourage some of the outdoor critters from nosing around. Just wondering. Thanks.:grinjoint:

SS, your babies are starting to look grown up - well done!

Doc, as a veteran of the great LED experiment I can agree with you. The technology is not there yet for the mainstream. Just remember for a certain set of constraints LEDs pose a viable solution. Situations where power, heat and growing space are all at a premium are where these units a best used now.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

my prob is I can't leave my seedlings under T5's...I stare at that 400 MH and just have to get them under it ASAP. I wonder if I'm actually improving their growth by doing that, or just wasting electric $$$.
Anyway, so as for seedlings and veg, would the LED's be better than the T5's?

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

SS can't say this, as the unbiased experimenter, but as the observer I can say almost anything!

Yep. VK is a strain characterized by thick buds that need support. At day 33 these plants should have large colas forming...the size of these buds are a huge disappointment.

The problem is definitely the lights...both of them. These plants could not have been cared for better. They could not be more healthy. Had SS been using a 400 watt HID these plants would look totally different.

There, I said it.

These lights veg well....very well. But they don't flower.

I was really stoked on getting an LED when this journal started. But now, I've decided I don't want one. A nice T5 will work for veg and seedlings, and a 1000 watt HPS will leave these LED's in the dust. I think it's quite evident that they are totally lacking.

We're going to find out in a few weeks.

THIS is probably why all the LED comparison grows always get stopped before finished. It's not a curse it's ...impatience? or just the obviousness to the grower that it'd be better under HID's so they switch 'em out. I still wonder if they were left to finish though, if there wouldn't be better quality or something. Or maybe they'll go longer and keep developing?

I have used a 110w T5 for veg, which is fairly close in wattage to the 126w HGL panel.

The plants vegged under the HGL light on this grow had somewhat fatter stems than the ones I've vegged under my T5, but the strains were different, so I'm not sure how much I can infer from that.

In any case, T5's veg extremely well, and generally speaking, I can't see any real advantage to using LED's over T5's for vegging.

I think it may have some of the same benefits outdoors, such as slowing down evaporation somewhat, helping to keep the dirt in the container when watering, allowing the roots to utilize *all* of the dirt in the pot, but I'm not sure about preventing pests. It might give bugs lots of nice little hidey holes and make them harder to spot, but I haven't used it outdoors, so I don't know.

I think it *might* help keep my dogs from rootin' around in the pots, especially after using fish fertilizer, lol, but gonna have to test that theory.

For me, the greatest benefits are that it makes all of the soil in the container available to the roots, and it lets me water with a fairly strong spray without blowing dirt all over the place.

I like it. I'm going to continue to use it on future soil grows, whether indoors or out.

thanks OMM ;)

I feel like I'd be shirking my duty, quitting when the going got tough, and letting you and Ms. Sun down if I kept my silence and didn't share my carefully considered opinion on EXACTLY what you should do with the harvest...

Smoke it. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Ok, but what about the inhalation/exhalation ratio, and how close do I need to calibrate joint weights?

Sorry man, I've got a warped sense of humor. ;)

No need to apologize, that's my favorite kind ;).

Use the same strain and run a grow all the way through veg with the T5, flowering with the MH, and then on the next grow just use the MH all the way through.

and then let us know ;)

it's not easy to fight the urge to put our babies under what we think will do them best, not easy at all, but if you want to know, you gotta be willing to risk a possible smaller harvest to find out.

just think of how much that info will benefit your future grows, with *either* outcome. If the T5 vegges well enough, you'll save a lot of money in energy costs, if the MH vegges significantly better, you'll get bigger yields.

I just erased a 23 line message and decided to go with "thanks". LOL. it's easy to get rambling. I may very well journalize a grow if I can get my environment "stable"...I may have to pull the plug unexpectedly at any moment...kind of flying by the seat of my pants. but if I can I will, and ASAP-ly so. If I had some carpentry & electric skills I'd be in a much better place, environment-wise. sigh. it's tough being ignorant.

sorry I applied my reply to the wrong quote.. whatever. sorry for writing all over your thread!

As a veg light, compared to a six tube 4' T5, the power savings pencil out in a couple of grows. I never expected any flowering at all- so, to say the least,
I'm pleasantly surprised and medicated.;)

Are you getting comparable coverage and veg results with the lower-wattage LED vs the T5 you were using previously?

When vegging the Widow, it appeared to rival a 400w MH. More testing is needed. Got 2 WW clones in the works and plan on using the LED for veg and a 600w digital with a Hortilux HPS for flower, in a 2'7" X 4'11" tent. I can eliminate the heat of two 600s, just not 2 1000s. Got the other 600 set up over the Afghan Kush pair- used a 600w Sunmaster Cool Deluxe for veg, so this will be the first real test. :rollit:
