Growing Cannabis 101: Mint Chocolate OG, HSO, Organic Super-Soil, 25% Perlite, Gaja Green Organics, 3 Mars 300s &1 Mars 144, Equal Par Wall To Wall

Strain info- Mint chocolate OG by humboldt seed organization. 80% indica 20% sativa 22-26 % THC CBD- unknown

Enviorment into- I am running this plant in a 5 gal space bucket project I made , it consists of a main food grade bucket and 11 spacers to give me enough room for the mars hydro 300. I originally had it set to the recommended height, I soon realized even at the 24” mark it was burning my plant, so had to do a little trial and error to get where I am with the height of the bucket. There is an intake fan at the top of the main bucket ( it’s at level with my medium) I put a scrog on one of the spacers and an internal fan on another to keep everything moving. There is also an out take fan at the top near the grow light. This is my first time growing in a space bucket so bare with me.

Medium- Organic living soil with 25% perlite for aeration. I have the plant in a 3 gal root pouch ( I absolutely love how these pots air prune and your plant will NEVER get root bound, you’ve never seen a root ball until you’ve seen out of a fabric pot)

Nutrients- I used gaja green organic dry amendments, I start my seeds right into this medium. It’s a slow release and relies on microbial life to break down the organic matter, when the microbial life poop out what they’ve eaten it now is readily available for the roots to take up , without this process my plants won’t eat( I ph @ 6.8 because that’s the optimum ph for microbial life I do dip down to 6.5 at times, I am feeding the soil and the soil feeds the plants. I inoculate my soil with 1 bubble tea before I plant and she’s good to go.

NOTE- mixing into your soil lasts a lot longer then a top dress so I almost get my whole veg out of the first mix , and top dress you get about 5 weeks, so you need to plan your last feeding properly so the plant uses the nutes before harvest ( you get a cleaner smoother smoke when the plant fades away)

For veg I use 75% all purpose 4-4-4 and 25% power bloom 2-8-4 to help with my topping and training. The plant seems to bounce back faster then just doing the 4-4-4

Before I switch to 12/12 I use 50% 4-4-4 and 50% 2-8-4 , this is done by top dressing and watering in

5 weeks before harvest I do 75% power bloom 2-8-4 and 25% all purpose 4-4-4

If you have any questions on any of this please feel free to ask me . I just wanted to give you guys as much info as possible so you can get a feel for what I’m doing here

March 4/19
Seed is being germinated in my home made seed starter/cloner. I don’t do a lot at a time so it’s perfect size for me

She broke ground and I couldn’t be happier. She’s already in amended soil with the slow release of gaja I’ve never had problems burning my seedlings you just need to mix your medium well do there isn’t any hot spots.

March 8/19
She’s begun to open up and you can see the start of its first true leaves

The growth was really slow due to overwatering I felt like I was gonna kill the plant so I quickly transplanted into my 3 gal root pouch ( I’ve always Used them so I struggle with regular pots)

Today is the day I transplanted into my 3 gal root pouch , I’ve struggled with the regular pots since I was so used to root pouches she was really heavy and falling over due to my own ignorance . But this is the time she started to bounce back

She looks good,Dean...so that was almost 6 weeks ago...She got off to a great start!
It'll be interesting to see what she looks like now...probably changed just a little bit?:)

Yeah about that @carcass she looks pretty good now I just don’t want to spoil it , or I’d just put one up of it now but I hope in the next day or 2 I’ll have everything up to date. Thanks for the positive words it’s been an interesting learning curve but I am very happy with how it’s doing , I can’t wait to share it all and get some feedback from all of you at the 420 mag family

I was gonna say-if that's not her, whatever plant that is is looking great....
Man,you could use that canopy as a straightedge...beautiful !

@carcass thats my beautiful mint choc og by humboldt seed organization, thank you so much for your encouraging words, I was a little bit hesitant to start this . Everyone has been so helpful along the way, I am very happy I did . there was a lot of hick ups to get to this point , but it has been a very fun project, I took some clones off of er right before this pic. But the plant is growing so nice it makes me want to put it in my 2x4 and grow it out , but I’ll just take clones and run another one. I really want to see what I can get out of this small space grow.

I felt I was in a small space (2'x2'x46") till I read about your bucket...
It's going to be an interesting project, sounds like you've got it planned out pretty well !

It will be able to get considerably bigger in a tent-A tent could be "plan B"-when or if you run out of room in the bucket-into the tent it goes!
I kind of split the difference between a bucket and a tent-I'm growing in a cardboard box that's bigger than a bucket, but smaller than a tent-My "plan B" is to move them outside if I totally run out of room in "the box"...

We need to find out if these thing stretch or not . Keep the lights low enough . We should be okay .

See good thing about this is height isn’t the issue , I can always add more spacers but I only have 12” diameter so I may put this guy in a tent and run of his clones in here , there’s about 20 main tops on the plant and when they fatten up in flower I think I’ll run out of space (width wise ) I think I need to do like 8 colas max for this set up. What do you guys think ?? I would just hate to run into Mold problems from lack of airflow , nothing worse then budrot on your hard earned garden

@carcass I have done the cardboard box run but only for veg I can’t have the smell in the house. I’d love to see your set up is it in a journal. I love seeing people’s megiver contraptions for growing.

Well, now I know what a spacebucket is.....I didn't really know what you were talking about before, but I figured you did, so if I just waited awhile,I'd find out....
It's an interesting way to grow...I can see how parts of it could be a bit of a challenge, especially when the plant gets a bit taller.
8 sounds like the right number of buds-should allow for enough airflow& keep the mold away
It must look pretty cool when it's dark and the only light on is the LED...

Yeah,I've got a journal going-the link is there in my sig -stop in & see what you think....

Welcome to 420 Dean!!

Sounds like you been down a long hard broken road but I see you have picked yourself up and back on track! Glad your hear to share your work and hope the best for you!!

This plant is starting to stretch its legs in its new home, now that I’m in a air pot / root pouch I won’t make the rookie mistake of overwatering. Now that I got a better handle on it and it’s almost impossible to over water in an air pot /root pouch

I decided to put a medium cover in so my soil doesn’t dry out as fast, the microbial life will become dormant if it dries out. If it does I will have to run a bubble tea to reintroduce a mass amount of microbial life to the medium. I am using Organics so I feed the soil the soil feeds my plants

I actually had to move my plants farther away from the LED to stretch the node spacing out-
The nodes were about 1/4" apart so I lowered the plant about 6" and the new nodes spaced out to about 3/4". I was at 24",and adjusted to 30"
I don't adjust the light-it's too much of a pain-I raise or lower the plants instead, until they're in the
final pots.

Hey dean morning buddy !

I was thinking about your air flow problem?

Might not help but what about putting a fan aiming at your light on top of bucket shooting down at light and possibly going and getting some air flow in those buckets ?

Hey your rh is a bit low for veg If correct only forty percent ?

Can you take some
Kind of clear baggie and put over the pot to trap on more moisture your plant would appreciate higher rh at ex specially veg time! More roots more fruits ?
