Graytail's Cupwinners in High Brix Soil - 4x4 - 600W HPS - Perpetual

Got any tips or wisdom for sprouting 10-20 yr old bagseeds? I have a few thousand ...

lol! with a few thousand, you can just plant ten a week under different conditions. Let us know what works! I'm remined of some bean seeds that were gifted to my cub scout troop when I was a wee lad. The beans came from a pot unearthed in an ancient Anasazi ruin. We got plants going from a few of the beans. We were too young to understand what we had. Under current cultural responsibility standards we never should've had them to begin with. Back in the day, what was dug up out of ruins was fair game.

Bagseed I wouldn't mess with unless I had a lot of time on my hands though seriously. You would have to grow the lot- find all the females. All the seeds with good growing properties will likely be F1 crossbreeds because some guy/gal on the farm had a male they didn't catch. That male lightly pollinated the grow next to his and you bought that guys bud. So you will have the vigor, but the end product is a mystery. It could be the greatest thing ever though- you never know.

If it grows stunted compared to the F1's you grow, there is a chance you could have the same strain as the bag you found it out of. It's just too time consuming for me personally :) And 10 to 20 years old. Unless they were frozen your going to lose some but what do I know. You might be able to get most.

Be a fun experiment. You could name a new strain. I did one strain myself, it's a blue dream and the tank cop strain crossed. She looks like a strait sativa now- I named her Second Wife. It's the same thing- maybe good, maybe not.. Mystery weed. More than likely it will smell like hay and cinnamon but it was educational

LOL, the bagseeds ... !

I've tried 4 times now. I'd soak a couple dozen and after a day or two, sure enough, a few would show that white crack down the side. I planted the first ones in peat pods - nothin'. Got the same thing the second time - they'd crack but not sprout. I tried to grow a root in paper towels - no go. They just don't have enough to get a root going.

Some day I'll find some super turbo root sprouter hormone sumpin-or-other ... maybe that'll work. Gotta be scads of fun phenos in there.

Hey gray, I'm sure you could get them to grow. I wrote a guide and traded it for stuff on the farm last year. Believe it or not a lot of the outdoor growers I grew with don't make clones or grow seeds. They buy clones local or out of town right before planting. There's a window here where if you have mothers and know how to clone, you can wear lipstick the rest of the summer if you wanted. :)

Things to buy:

1. Mondi dome, around 7 dollars at Roots
2. Tray and net tray, same size as dome, also sold at Roots
3. Super Vida Grow, sold at Root by the quart for around 26 bucks
4. General Organics Bio Root, sold at Ag by the quart for 15 bucks
5. General Organics Bio Weed
6. General Organics CaMg+
7. Clonex Rooting Compound
8. Clonex Clone Solution
9. Rockwool Cubes (98 sheet)
First cut the rockwool cubes down into squares and soak each in the following solution:
Parts Per Gallon:
1 tsp Super Vida Grow
1 tsp Bio Root
1 tsp CaMg+
½ tsp Bio Weed

Or you can simply mix clonex clone solution using 4 tsp per gallon.. Doing this works as well but you will have longer root times.

Now squeeze excess solution out of each rockwool cube and place into tray until tray it's full.

Take your scissors and open them up.. Run one end down into each rockwool cube to form a slit to the bottom. This will help smaller cuttings fit in without bending the stems. Now you can let that sit overnight with the dome placed on top of the tray or go straight to cloning. The advantage of leaving the rockwool sitting overnight is it allows the solution to soak in and you will find especially with smaller cuttings, much easier to push the stems down in for good contact.

Pour some of the brown colored Clonex clone solution into a small shot glass. Take each cutting at a 45 degree angle to the stem using a razor blade, cut 3 slits into the skin near the bottom of the cutting for roots to grow out. This is a very important step. You do not want to cut into the stem itself, just the outer skin. It takes some practice but this step plays a part in letting you get almost all of your cuttings rooted.

Cut all the leaves on the clone to prevent transpiration.. I like to cut about half way in on each leaf, this is also important so all the clones get light in the tray. Leaving big fan leaves blocks smaller clones from getting light in the tray.

Now place the clone into the shot glass (stem only). You do not what to let that sit in the solution too long, max about a minute.. This will let the clone soak in some solution. Now shake that off and dip it into the Clonex rooting compound (purple stuff).
Not much is needed, you can stick the clone into the rockwool now and rinse, repeat. Make sure there is good contact with the rockwool beyond the pre-cut holes (which is why the scissor prep comes in handy for smaller cuttings).

Keep the dome on the tray in between cuttings and keep it misted with water. The clones will foliage feed because they have no roots the first couple of days. Place the dome under a T5 or T8 light and make sure to open it once a day. When you open it, mist the dome with water only (not the plants), and never water the rockwool. Opening the dome once a day allows the plants to get oxygen (required for rooting to occur). The dome should be kept misted and should never look dry. Once a day is fine. Having a higher than normal temperature is fine too.

Check the net tray after 4 days, and every day after, for signs of roots.. Immediately transfer any rooting clone to a tray outside the dome or cup and soil, they are ready to put under a mh light or sun.

Wear some lipstick when you pull the last clone out the dome with a 95% success rate. Average loss is around 5 cuttings for every 100.

Try the clonex clone solution by itself (not the rooting compound). It's called Clonex clone & seedling nutrient 1-0.4-1. I tried different methods and this was by far the fastest for cuttings. It was just me messing around with different nutrients I'd bought. I was getting full trays of 98 fully rooted as quick as 5 days using this method. It was summer so if it's cold you might want to use a heating pad. For seeds I personally use just RO water. But maybe they need a boost- I figure if it works to induce roots on cuttings, you might use the solution on seed and see what happens. I do use a diluted solution with the vida and gen organics line when the seeds sprout. So putting it in early might just work.

I still like the nutriplant too but that's a discussion for a different time. I walked into the grow room the other day after nutriplant watering the day before. And I was looking at growth equal to what you get outside :) It's like weed crack

Thanks for the tip, BT! I'll keep that in mind if I feel like taking another stab at it. :thumb:

I suggest you recruit a 12 member cub scout troop and give each member two dozen seeds each. lol

I had a disruptive weekend, so I'm a couple of days behind. I'll get pics today and update later or tomorrow.

Jamaican Dream is looking especially good this run. This is a bud down in mid-canopy. :cheesygrinsmiley:

It's weekly update/picture time!

I'm down to 5 ladies in the flower room after the TD harvest, and I'm planning to chop Utopia Haze on Sunday - she has some amber trichs and I don't want the buzz to get too stoney. They're still mostly clear, though, so if I see a sign that she really wants to make more calyxes, I'm game. :cheesygrinsmiley:

SLH Reveg is in the home stretch. This is going to have a lot of small nuglets but it's all for personal consumption anyway, and I like little nugs jus' fine - I bet SLH makes some Fine kief, too! :cheesygrinsmiley: The stems can't support the growth though, so it's already falling apart - gonna need some stakes before she finishes. But I think I might get 3+ oz from the second harvest.

Heheh, Jamaican Dream is SO much fun to grow! I forgot how little help and assistance it needs. I look at it and meh, it's doin' jus' fine - looks like it always did at this point - nothing different any of the other 4 times I've grown it. This is the stage where I do a double-take though. She always purdy.

Ditto for White Panther - this one makes really impressive dense sticky tops. This is just my second run for this strain, but it looks just like its mother, the same way the JDs do. Same same - easy, reliable - potent weighty harvest. Almost too easy, heheh.

Cotton Candy is new for me, and I'm impressed by its vigor. I have Cotton Candy, Carnival and Grapefruit in veg, and I'm surprised that CC blew past the other two by such a margin. I LST'd it and topped the other two, so that may be part of it. CC will be ready for flower to replace Utopia Haze, and the other two will come a week or two later, so I'll be lighting bare floor in the flower room again - annoying - I need a better veg space - I keep falling behind. CC is Lavender x Power Plant. So far, it's certainly expressing its Power Plant genes and I can't wait to see the blue/lavender color come out.

I like Carnival so far. She hooked into the soil better than Grapefruit. Nice vibrant color and posture!

I'm surprised that Grapefruit is the laggard of the three - thought it'd be the fast one. Nice branch structure after the topping though. :cheesygrinsmiley:

And this is what I managed to salvage from my batch of clones. I lost my JD cut, and will have to reveg if I want to keep it. I didn't really want to run another SLH, but ... that's all that I have right now.

The new batch of cuts is doing fine.
