Graytail's Cupwinners in High Brix Soil - 4x4 - 600W HPS - Perpetual

Bacterially dominated soils (as opposed to fungally dominated) break down organic debris and minerals into useable forms of nitrogen (nitrates) veggies, annuals and grasses like. Chem nutrients bypass this underground "ecosystem", but also tend to harm it. Not all those microscopic animals can migrate away from the rhizosphere; they get killed by this manmade form of their own bodily waste used to feed plants.
I imagine these brix readings indicate if the symbiotic relationship you're attempting to create is balanced out; I need to read up more on that subject to see how.

The deepest knowledge base is in the wine industry, with some in edible produce too, as well as hobby farming, but pretty much squat for cannabis.

We be pioneerin' baby! :slide:

Yeah I started out just wanting to grow some smoke and wound up a wannabe soil microbiologist (this damn gateway to knowledge drug does that to some of us I guess). I've had a few plants recently that aren't real happy with my adventures into the unknown, though. Speaking of being on our own, I noticed on the brix charts that different plants have different #s to aim at (this one being 12). Any idea on how this was determined?

Holy crap, huge yield from the White Panther!

104 grams, 3.67oz in 135 days = 0.770 grams/day

:yahoo:

I haven't even come close to that yet as far as weight from a single plant. Nice yield!

You're kidding! Hot damn.

It looked hefty, but I was thinking just under 3oz. Heheh, ya, White Panther is a winner.

Great smoke, too! It's real old school - lemon diesel sativa high - good solid punch to it ... good stuff!

I have one more in flower now and another one rooting.

Hey bud, have you read up on kool bloom?

It sounds a little familiar, but I haven't really been paying attention. There are some high brix tools to manipulate flowering, so I'm going that direction for now.

Thanks for the reps!

I think kool bloom IS considered a high brix tool to manipulate flowering. P2O5 and K2O "promotes intense flowering" does that sound familiar?

Nope. Kool Bloom is definitely not a high brix tool, at least in the biological sense of the idea. That's a PK spike, which is a modern industrial type of growing in sterile media, etc.

A high brix tool might be a very weak solution of ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulfate......the Nh4 is what we're looking for, the cationic form of nitrogen. The fact that phosphate and sulfur also tend to have a reproductive effect on the soil helps. Include some fishy ferts or a good microbial tea with this and you've got a very powerful tool.

But using Kool Bloom could really harm your soil life and the potassium is sky high and will mess up the EC of the soil, causing all kinds of trouble.

But in hydro or coco or something like that, Kool Bloom probably does increase brix, because with that style of growing a PK spike really gets fruit to fatten and ripen.

I've used kool bloom in a dwc bubbler. Seemed to fatten and harden buds up near harvest, but also need to use with extreme caution. Stuff is strong easy to over do it. Also seems to overlap with any flushing a hydro person might consider near harvest.

I have a bag sitting around I likely won't ever use.

I have a friend who is a hydro wizard and he uses Kool Bloom in the granular form, as well a few other super concentrated PK spikes. They work super well, and he always had a large harvest of very sexy buds.

It's a different style of growing, but not to be confused with the biological approach to growing that is known as High Brix.

Have you found a recommended brix for cannabis? I've looked before and was surprised how little there is about brix, much less brix and cannabis. Doc says 12 generally gets you a trouble-free plant from his experience. That might have gotten repeated around the forums. I've had perfectly healthy and shiny plants with readings as low as 9, and ugly crap like my Hawaiian Snow that consistantly read 14. I've finished some as low as 11 and as high as 16. Lately, the readings have narrowed down to the low teens as my soil matures and I get a better handle on what I'm doing.

More goings-on in the grow this past week

"Wild Thailand" was done so I chopped her. My conclusion is that this isn't Wild Thailand - it has to be a mixup. And so far, I'm unimpressed with the smoke. The buds I've tested have been bland in every sense - very little flavor and aroma, and a solid bland stone. "wild thailand"? I think not. I'm rechristening it Bland Topeka unless something magical happens in the cure.

Behold, the recently chopped Bland Topeka!

Panama has been making nanners. She's really close to finishing, so for the time being, I'm pluckin' 'em off daily. I'd love to get some mature seeds, but i don't want to pollute the room, so she'll get chopped unless she gets a grip. Meanwhile, whew! This one really reacted to the Cat drench, which is probably why she's making nanners. She's growing big ugly fat calyxes and rapidly turning purple. The juice I squeezed for the brix reading was so purple that it was hard to see the line on the refractometer. Test buds have been very good. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Tangerine Dream seems to be in the groove. It hasn't been doing anything dramatic at all, but there's been steady progress. It's a 12 week strain, so there's still 6 weeks to go. I kinda like the look of the slender spiky colas.

Utopia Haze was a really awkward plant in veg, but I sorta wish I'd taken a cut of it. It's completely different from anything I've seen before, all thin and leafless, but it's growing some fine buddage. It's 3 weeks younger that the TD with better trich production, and even though the budsites are sparse, they seem to be growing solid buds - maybe 1.5 ounces when it's finished?

SLH Reveg is humming along, not doing anything particularly notable. I think she's finishing stretch, so it'll be another short one, but I've been getting pretty good yield from shorties. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Here's the White Panther cut that replaces the one I just harvested. This one probably won't be as big - 7 main colas, half what its mother had - but I love the vigor and strong branches of this strain. I have 2 cuts almost ready, and I think I'll probably run both of them and scrap the Bland Topekas.

Here's the first Panama cut - put her in 12/12 yesterday. This one got vegged to twice the height of the mother, so I have high hopes for it. I'm going to pay special attention to this one - I'd love to get 3+ oz of sticky primo purple bud. Great characteristics in this strain!

Here's the Bland Topeka cut I have on deck, ready to flower. I'll cull it unless the cured bud improves a lot. A pity - this one has such a gorgeous habit.

The other "Thai" that I was LSTing will go, too. This ugly stalled Panama cut got planted into a 6 gallon pot yesterday. She'll recover there and I'll get her into flower to replace the culled "Thai".

I'm going to have another hole in my perpetual so I'm going to plant these seedlings directly into 6 gallon pots. They've been in the solos for too long as it is, so I'm confidant they'll take to the new soil easily. I hope to gain a week or two in veg.

DSCN31312.JPG

The cuts should be ready for pots this week - I'm just waiting for some new 1.5 gallon square white pots to arrive today.

Congrats once again Gray. It seems you're on a NEVERENDINGHARVEST. Once again I'd like to ask Doc Bud for more info on Doc's High Brix. I've grown quit interested in it
