Hmm, I didn't reply immediately, and ... two days passed ... oops. 
@SweetSue - I've rolled it around and around in my head, and it's just too hard to try to custom fit something like that. Ima gonna try to do a really nice permanent job, with the shiny white board paneling over the insulation for easy cleaning, hopefully all sealed up, too. I'll lose the heat sink in the summer, but I'll do better in the winter. I could always install a window A/C for the basement, which would clear up both temp and humidity ...
@brightlight - I didn't fully answer your question. I'm pretty sure the plants could handle being closer to the lights, but they're thriving at this distance, and I'll let any taller plants grow up to the lights until I see stunting. It looks like both BHxUH and Tikal1 will be good candidates - BHxUH is at 41 inches so far and Tikal is at 37.
