GratefulBud's Summer 2023 Outside Grow

I put cardboard covers over the soil in both SIPs. Thinking this may reduce evaporation - it will be getting hot here next few days. I took a bucket lid and drew a circle on cardboard, then cut out the disk about a half inch inside the line I drew. Cut the piece in half and notched the center where it meats the stalk, and also notched where the fill pipe is. Easy to remove if desired.

Found this tiny praying mantis - hope he is eating good.

I topped 4 of the ladies again today - left Watermelon on Critical Kush as they were (topped only once).
The cover came out nice and neat. Looks like it will work great.

Thanks!
I'm not a big contest person.
Me either. I see the work people put in, like doing it professionally and I think it’s wrong when someone like me gets nominated. You’re not like me tho. You do a proper showcase of your work.
Not against it, I just think there are others here more deserving of accolades and prizes.
Totally picking up what you’re putting down.
I post in this grow journal to keep track of my mistakes (and successes), and to track the valuable input I get from other growers.
Me too!

I do nominate journal and member every single month. I think it’s important members who are basically here to help and support get recognised and the people who journal so beautifully and professionally get recognised too. I think you journal beautifully and professionally Scoobs. I really do.

You are so awesome!

I went fishing for a few days and let my wife take care of the plants. All she did was add water to the SIPs. The others were happy to wait until I returned today to feed. All looking good!

The two SIPs:

I trimmed the lower third of each of the SIP plants - any inner possible flowers that were not gonna get much sun was removed. I left a few fan leaves along with the possible flowers on the ends of the branches. Opened up the interior for air flow, but also to force the plant to focus on the ends - i.e. build me some hefty colas. They both look very bushy up top.

I'll trim some more first week of flower. I'll remove any future larf early so the plant can focus on the tops.

Also trimmed some lower larf off these 4.

The 4 fabric pot ladies sure look small compared to the SIPs. All were sprouted within 3 days of each other. I probably should have done a better comparison test. Left my lab coat in the office I guess.

I haven't sprayed neem in about 5 days so they are due. I saw two tiny grasshoppers and some chew marks. Also saw a tiny preying mantis. Hope he chews on those grasshoppers. No signs of thrips or mites; I'll spray neem tomorrow am just in case.

Have a great week!

WoW You have some beautiful plants. The plants in the cloth bags are a good size.

Those SIPs are knocking the socks of the cloth bags, lab coat or not! Looks like the missus did a fine job on all while you whiled away the hours with a rod in your hand. :)
Thanks Shed!
I swear whenever I go away for a few days my plants always seem to look better when I get back. She says she does not touch them, but I'm starting to think she has some secret plant food she is not telling me about.

Thanks Keith!
These 4 plants look much smaller than my previous grows. The SIPs look much bigger than last year's ladies. I have topped them twice and they are way bushier.

They all look amazing! Those SIPS! Fat as!

I love the thought of you enjoying your life! Hope the fish were biting and the vibe was zen. Xo

We need to introduce Drogo Dragon to Floramingo!

🐉❤️ 🦩

First time I caught a Kokanee Salmon - I caught two. They were kinda small - largest was about 2 pounds (what the hell is that? 14 kilos or something? LOL!

I put them back for another day.

Definitely!

This morning I found one aphid on the SFV Gorilla. I sprayed neem on all shortly afterward. Before I sprayed I gently nudged a tiny praying mantis onto my finger and I moved him off the Critical Kush onto a nearby chair. I moved him back a little while later. This afternoon I saw him perched on the CK in his usual spot so I left him. This evening I saw the white spider on that same plant - and no sign of the praying mantis.

I read recently that airflow is important to the roots so instead of using the half inch PVC for the overflow I used 3/4 - same as the fill tube.
Hey Bud, I like your build very much. I'm questioning this science about the airflow. If you look at Shed's 5KC those roots are packed into the perlite res and that plant is growing like a weed. In fact it is outstripping his problematic SIP. I am wondering if people with roots in the SIP res might not be growing similarly giant plants. I am wondering if the combo between soil and hydro on the perlite SWICK might not be more beneficial than an air gap. It certainly makes the build simple.
They were close in size until about a week ago. Just in the past 3-4 days it seems like the two in SIP finally found the fountain of life in the res - and they are gushing.
I'm sorry I missed what you feed your plants. I'm sure I read grow dots? Are you feeding any nutes into the res? Are roots growing into the res?

Sorry I am so late and rushed straight to a technical question :) Your poolside grow is beautiful.

I think the air gap is still important even in my SWICK grow, if not for the roots than to make sure that the soil is never sitting in water. The air gap is what is supposed to prevent root rot.
Right, but in the case of a perlite SWICK, the res is sitting at one third of the perlite bed, allowing air to percolate in the perlite, whereas in SIP they use a different kind of air gap. I'm not sure that is altogether necessary and a comparison like yours is helpful in determining the details. Your 5KC is outstripping your SIP plant and one of the reasons is the roots in the perlite.

I'm 100% sure the reason my SWICK is outstripping the SIP is because the SWICK was SWICK'd from birth and the SIP was top-watered all the way through the 1 gallon stage. No matter how well I did the transplant there was likely to be a transition period for the SIP, and I seemed to have messed that part up!

I think it is more than one reason but I agree that sub-irrigation from birth is important to avoid the transition that comes with the establishment of a different rooting system.
