GratefulBud's Summer 2023 Outside Grow

Hello you!

Sorry to hear about the caterpillars and rot.

Growing is not for the faint hearted that’s fo sho.
Thanks Tra!

Every year I swear I'm not gonna grow again - but then I do. I forget how enjoyable it is. The last 3 weeks I'm nervous as hell. Damn caterpillars do not help.

The nets seem to work fairly well, however all of my plants smell like rank ass (6 different strains). Even the two not under netting. Not sure why. Maybe the FF nutrients? Maybe bt?
I'm slowly reducing the nutes. In another week they will be on water only until harvest - which may be soon for the White Widow. She is looking close to done.
Those little fuckers just do not die. I feel for you brother.
Thanks man! Good luck to you as well.
I went out and got a new bottle of BT because of your experience! :goodluck: with the rest of the killing.
Hey Shed!
It's weird. I spray bt, then the next day I see a bunch of damage. WTH? It's like I piss them off and they chomp like crazy.

Good news - today I did not see any new damaged buds. Knock wood.

I would like to publicly apologize to my plants for implying that they smell like rank ass. I was misinformed. They do not, in fact, smell like rank ass. They smell . . . spicy. Yeah that's it. Spicy. Piney fruity and spicy. So hopefully my plants are cool with me now.

This morning I washed 4 with a lite Castile soap solution and rinsed them off 30 mins later. Just freshening the ladies up a bit that's all. They now smell fresh and spicy (and a little like Castile hemp soap).

I'll wash the OG and Mimosa tomorrow. So they smell spicy.

Pulled another 7grams or so of damaged buds today - from the Watermelon Kush and the White Widow.
The nugs were rotted but still spicy.

Have a great weekend!

Hopefully, whatever they gnawed on gave them a bellyfull of bt...🤮
Hiya Carcass!

I'm finding weird chew damage on the stems of lower leaves. Not the buds, and not on the leaves themselves - just on the stem of the leaf about a half inch from the branch. Odd.

I see a shitton of brown ladybugs - but they are not ladybugs they are Australian Eucalyptus beetles from my neighbors tree. They sit on the outside of the nets trying to get to the plants. Not seeing any grasshoppers or aphids, but I did see a few tiny little black beetles. Like ladybug larva but they must be the ones chewing stems. Little fuckers.

This is one of the little buggers.

A few pics of the Watermelon Kush

And the White Widow.

I'm thinking these two plants may be close. Hardly any new white pistils, and the red hairs are enveloped in the calyx. Buds on these two plants are thick and chunky whereas the others are still fattening up.

Damn that little bugger and your neighbor's tree! WK flowers are getting thick but something is nibbling the leaves (mites or thrips - I have a hard time telling those white spots apart). On the plus side the treatment's the same if you feel like spraying. if you think it's close to coming down though it might not take enough damage in the meantime to matter.

Sun's out today! ☀️

I sprayed Castile soap yesterday so that should help. Her buds are sticky gooey. Sun is finally out in earnest today! First time in weeks it seems like.

Today I'm getting the patio fridge ready, and I've got a few friends chomping at the bit willing to help trim.
I'll probably chop the WK or the WW in the next week or so. I have learned to be patient. If I chop early it's more of an uplifting high. Chop late and it puts you on the couch. Chop really late and, well, you'll know because the buds look like dried up chunky green raisins.

Sorry I missed most of your grow, GB. It was a busy summer.

And, I'm sorry about the bud rot. I've had to deal with that in past years so I definitely feel your pain.

Nonetheless, I think your plants look pretty good all things considering.

In spite of your caterpillar issues, I think your plants are looking fantastic!
I’m afraid the gorilla sip is lost. She looks like absolute shit.
Don't give up on her!
The Gorilla SIP is still kicking - and looking better than she did a few weeks ago.
There you go! Actually, I think it's looking better than my SIP plant. :thumb:
Today 6 of her best tops were showing rot damage.
Those buds were rock hard sticky and gooey.
I've found there's two different issues that caterpillars cause. One is botrytis, which is caused by the caterpillar poop. Throw that stuff in the trash! The other is just the bud drying up because the caterpillar chewed its stem off from below. In the later case, I don't think you need to throw the entire bud in the trash. At this stage you should be able to keep it and use it for oils, or if it's really close to ripe, you just dry it and treat it like tester weed.

The way BT works is that the caterpillars have to eat the treated plant material, and then it slowly kills them - over a couple days, I believe. It doesn't kill them on contact. So you're going to continue to get damage for a couple days.

From the pictures you've shared, to me it looks like White Widow still has a couple more weeks.

Thanks HashGirl!
I have been cutting out anything that looks bad. I seem to grow way too much for my needs so there’s plenty of good stuff at harvest - which will be soon.

Thanks Beez!
I’ve got a LOT of good buds remaining so I’m ok chopping and tossing anything suspect.
The White Widow has slowed drinking way down compared to the others. Her tops look done. I’ll post pictures later today.

I spent the last 3 days up at my favorite fishing spot in the Eastern Sierra - outside of Bridgeport CA.
Had a blast! Caught and released many trout and one Kokanee salmon. Saw several eagles.

My wife watered all 6 plants while I was gone - water only. They look a little rough but smell wonderful.
