Grandpa Likes To Squeeze Stuff: Solventless Extracts, Rosin, Pressed Here!

Yea, thanks for pointing that out. Im lower now, around the 200 range. It varies from strain but, I don't really trust that PID so I use a heat gun to get a better idea.

What temps do you recommend I'm always listening.....
An accurate temp is really important. To high ofba temp for to long and youbwukl burn off terpenes flavour and quality.
For Temps:

Flower / trim - 180-220’F

Kief / hash - 160-180’F

I've got all the supplies to include empty or blank cartridges, but I've never got around to it. I follow a thread elsewhere where there are instructions on how to do it, but I've yet to try it. I have a decent pen I can load with dabs, on the go, which works pretty good. Im sure that's part of the reason why I haven't followed through with making my own carts.
Yeah, I have a couple different pens too....which one do you like for ease use/cleaning? I have a linx blaze with a quartz chamber that is sick....

Happy to be here! This is what I'm pressing with these days

That looks amazing. I would bet GPT runs that honeystraw right off the press.

I pressed 14g of raspberry diesel that was cut on 12/25 and has been stored properly through a 160 bag at 170 degrees for 2:20. Prob a good 30 seconds of that was cranking down slowly on the bag-i look for a certain feeling as the press lowers into resistance. Kinda like squeezing a blow-up doll (don't judge).

I currently using the Blackout X Prem31r... it's not bad but I know there's better ones out there. But, I use it a handful of times, maybe a dozen times a year.

Okay okay, you guys have started a rosin press fire around here... I need a game plan because I’d like to build one. It’s just for me, so I don’t need something to process massive amounts. I have a Harbor Frieght near by, so help me compile a list. Macgyver builder advice is welcome...
Does the press size matter? Is there a video I should watch?
:high-five:

I like to build my own stuff too. I have a harbor frieght near as well and looked at their frames with a thoughtful eye for several hours. I could envision many design issues and wondered how many I'd run into that I was not anticipating. I looked at the dollar difference and, while significant, not large enough to make me go the home-made path.

I decided to color within the lines for my first foray into the pressing world.
Of course, I'm sure some day soon I'll feel the need for something bigger... seems to be the way of things... and at that point I suspect I'll dig out the tools and visit my local Harbor Freight for a 20 ton frame and a hydraulic jack.

Aren’t you utilizing only a small amount of pressing force. What are the benefits of going over 6 ton press or even a 2 ton press?

Larger plates need more force according to my readings.
6ton is the range for the 3x5 plates. As the plates get larger, so do the jacks.
Tead has some long range ideas for some fat-ass plates... thus ideas of 20 tons at some latter date.
Ok, plates and heaters. Of course I can’t mill my own, so whatcha got your eye on?

Well... I just ordered my first 6ton with the 3x5s. When I get tired of it, I might get feisty and jump up to some 7x7s I've seen online. On the other hand, perhaps Co2 extractor prices will get reasonable... but who knows what magic the future holds.

Several companies/people sell plates/controllers.

I have recent experience with two presses, a 2.5x2.5 @ 2 tons and a 4x4 @ 12 tons. Both of these presses use the same single element in each plate heater.

The product you get is the end result of two curves, temp and pressure. Temp we set, it's static for each run generally with our lower end presses. The variable IMO that effects outcomes is pressure.

I had recent grows where I had about a qp of two different plants. I got to press these two plants and a couple others with both presses.

I've spoken about it in bits and pieces in past posts, here are my observations:

-the 2 ton press seemed to produce the most product running at 210F. Lowering the temp ANY reduced yields. My Raspberry Diesel yielded almost 1/3 less when pressing at 175 vs 220. The 12 ton press produces yields that are within about 2-5% when I reduce temp by the same amount. This shows that pressure matters plain and simple. It was repeatable with all the plants.

-shit tastes better at lower temps IMO. Sure you can press at 220 and do flaming hot throat burning dabs all day like youtube, but now that your making your own product, lets enjoy it ok? To avoid decreasing yields with lower temps use more freaking pressure.

-larger presses weigh more, take up more space, are more difficult to hide and move - remember I use a blow up doll to cover mine up-smaller presses can be brought over to your buddies house easier, but their also more prone to tip, and harder to use because of space constraints AND you limit the amount you can press at a time. Ever try to press 2 zips using 3.5g bags vs 14g bags. More pressure gives one a lot more options.

-if your a daily dabber get something that presses more than 1/8. If you have never dabbed before and are a daily smoker, just plan on you actually enjoying this and realizing it's easier on your lungs and your going to prob use less product and get wayyyyy more stoned once it's dialed in.

-larger plates and mo' pressure allow larger bags. Bags cost the same for 3.5g or 14g. Larger bags are easier to position on plates unless you have girly hands.

It's basically like using a screwdriver vs using a cordless driver....big difference in ease of use. But there are other factors to consider....

You can’t compare rosin to co2 extracts it’s solventless which is 100% pure. You can never obtain that purity with a solvent!!!

Just my .02$

I doubt your really getting anything net near 2 tons in the little press setup I had.

It's just a #.

What's funny with me, I had never had a dab or tried a concentrate until I bought a press....so rosin is what a dab should taste look like for me. I did try about 6 types of commercial dabs while out of town recently. I appreciate the variety, but their flavors were not any better than what I can do....about half of it was of crappier taste/quality than anything I have turned out.

Hey... that's me!
I do look forward to it... oh yes. I appreciate anticipation.

I was in no way trying to compare anything... merely speaking of the future. I looked at many extraction techniques. Tried a few. The whole alcohol thing is mostly a big fat PITA. Squeezin seems to be the most attractive for mere mortals with normal sized wallets.

Have you looked at dry ice hash extraction then doing rosin Pressing? That’s my next step! I’ve already ordered bubble bags and I can get dry ice at a store close to my house. I plan to drysift the keif and then press it into rosin getting the highest and most pure rosin quality. Added steps yes.... extra quality 420%!

Just some food for though for anyone thinking about improving their rosin game!

I’ve only just started pressing stuff so I have much to learn but I want to make the best quality product I can and going drysift hash to rosin seems to be the purest method so far!
