Grandpa Likes To Squeeze Stuff: Solventless Extracts, Rosin, Pressed Here!

Several companies/people sell plates/controllers.

I have recent experience with two presses, a 2.5x2.5 @ 2 tons and a 4x4 @ 12 tons. Both of these presses use the same single element in each plate heater.

The product you get is the end result of two curves, temp and pressure. Temp we set, it's static for each run generally with our lower end presses. The variable IMO that effects outcomes is pressure.

I had recent grows where I had about a qp of two different plants. I got to press these two plants and a couple others with both presses.

I've spoken about it in bits and pieces in past posts, here are my observations:

-the 2 ton press seemed to produce the most product running at 210F. Lowering the temp ANY reduced yields. My Raspberry Diesel yielded almost 1/3 less when pressing at 175 vs 220. The 12 ton press produces yields that are within about 2-5% when I reduce temp by the same amount. This shows that pressure matters plain and simple. It was repeatable with all the plants.

-shit tastes better at lower temps IMO. Sure you can press at 220 and do flaming hot throat burning dabs all day like youtube, but now that your making your own product, lets enjoy it ok? To avoid decreasing yields with lower temps use more freaking pressure.

-larger presses weigh more, take up more space, are more difficult to hide and move - remember I use a blow up doll to cover mine up-smaller presses can be brought over to your buddies house easier, but their also more prone to tip, and harder to use because of space constraints AND you limit the amount you can press at a time. Ever try to press 2 zips using 3.5g bags vs 14g bags. More pressure gives one a lot more options.

-if your a daily dabber get something that presses more than 1/8. If you have never dabbed before and are a daily smoker, just plan on you actually enjoying this and realizing it's easier on your lungs and your going to prob use less product and get wayyyyy more stoned once it's dialed in.

-larger plates and mo' pressure allow larger bags. Bags cost the same for 3.5g or 14g. Larger bags are easier to position on plates unless you have girly hands.

It's basically like using a screwdriver vs using a cordless driver....big difference in ease of use. But there are other factors to consider....

Outstanding post my friend. Explained very well. Quote of the day:

It's basically like using a screwdriver vs using a cordless driver....big difference in ease of use.

I started with a woman’s hair straightener and a C-clamp. I built my contraption from watching YouTube videos several years ago. There weren’t as many options as there are today. If you have the tools and ability to diy then it can certainly be done. I purchased everything from Amazon...including the aluminum blocks, ceramic heaters, thermocouple, PID, wire, etc. I’m no genius and if I can do it...well, a monkey could too. I already had two presses in my shop; a 6 ton and the 20 ton. Both purchased from Harbor Freight.

However, since then, there’s a lot more products on the market. If I were building it today I’d probably drop the cash on the professional blocks and PIDs from Dab Press or wherever and incorporate that into my press. When I built mine I put one ceramic heater in the center of each block (controlled by one PID) but I only drilled and tapped one thermocouple in one block. So, my temp is only reading one block correctly.

I’m lucky because I have the room to keep a 20 ton press laying around. Like I said before, this whole process of applying heat and pressure to squeeze out bud-juice is still absolutely amazing to me. I can’t believe it, but every time I do it, I smile. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Good discussions friends.

Have you looked at dry ice hash extraction then doing rosin Pressing? That’s my next step! I’ve already ordered bubble bags and I can get dry ice at a store close to my house. I plan to drysift the keif and then press it into rosin getting the highest and most pure rosin quality. Added steps yes.... extra quality 420%!

Just some food for though for anyone thinking about improving their rosin game!

I’ve only just started pressing stuff so I have much to learn but I want to make the best quality product I can and going drysift hash to rosin seems to be the purest method so far!

I tried the dry ice shake and press, but I didn’t like the final product. Maybe you’ll have better luck, but I found the quality to be lacking. Maybe it was my technique or not finding the right temps, etc. A friend of mine thinks it’s the dry ice. I don’t know.

I hope you get better results.

I use dry ice, and have about 15g of keif, but have yet to press it....I need to though.

Interesting! I know if shaken to hard you risk damaging the Trichome heads and if to much time is spent shaking you will start to release plant material witch lowers end quality and results as well!

Please squeeze and post ASAP!! Lol I would love to see some pictures and your thoughts

@Grandpa Tokin got any squeeze pics from your most recent press? What do you normally press when you do?

This is my latest. I love this picture because it shows how lovely the bud is before squeezing.

I’m pretty simple. I squeeze roughly 15 grams of bud (or less) a week and that usually lasts me about 4 to 7 days depending on how many friends visit etc. I hit bud and rosin all day long so I don’t really count, but the rosin is always a treat.

My buddy just grabbed the dp-rp35 from dabpress off of Amazon.. $300cad... and I grabbed a 12 ton bottle jack from princess auto $50.... now I’ve gotta design the frame for it....so any design recommendations you guys might have I am all ears....

I wanted to use this bad boy... but no one makes 120ton plates... and I ain’t got nearly enough product

I’d like to try that monster.

hehe.... I'm eyeing pressing 'cause I don't want to dance with the other methods any more.
Having said that, I've got a mountain of kief hangin 'round. I'm sure I'll kick those tires too.

I wanted to use this bad boy... but no one makes 120ton plates

Man... if you got one of those honkin big presses hangin round your toolshed, we'd expect you to be the kind of human that can resolve those sorts of minor engineering details. One suggestion tho.... you'll need one hell of an electrical drop to heat those sorts of fat-ass plates!

Ya it’s at my work... poor old girl hasn’t been used since... ‘08-‘09... whenever John Deere moved their operations from Canada down to Mexico...

I’m guessing our plant would have enough power to heat them up... but I don’t think the boss would appreciate the hydro bill lol... maybe a designated generator...

I’d need a house full of plants and a stash cupboard like van or blew to make it economical ...

And some custom sized press bags...

:hmmmm::hmmmm:

I should stop thinking about this right now.....

Good morning guys. Just a heads up, jump in the Mars Hydro thread for a chance at a free light.
