Grandpa Gets Oily! Everclear Extracts For Shatter Or Oil!

Why would anyone want to expose the good stuff to strong light? It's supposed to stay cool and dark.

For the same reason we heat the extract to decarboxylate it for oral / topical use. It improves the taste and possibly the potency of the herb. The extract is only exposed to the light for a few hours, the same as it's only heated for a few hours.

I personally like a dark green tincture. Whatever else gets infused, along with all the cannabinoids, is ok with me. When I make a tincture using sugar leaf trim, I let it soak for weeks. I decided to do it this way with trim after discovering how powerful the leaves are. I started eating the leaves I trimmed around week 3 of flower--just to eat some dark leafy greens--and they are incredibly powerful: I was high as heck for hours.

So my thinking was, if the leaves--long before trichomes appear--have this much psychoactive material in them, I should let trim soak for a long time.

Apparently, this is one of the best-kept secrets around.

I’ve made many tinctures (green dragon type) in the past and enjoy them also. However, this thread wasn’t about that. This tutorial was about making a completely different extract. I’ve never tried dabbing tincture, but I can imagine it would taste like ass. Just sayin. :ganjamon:

And I couldn't be happier with the results I got following your method, GT. If I was into dabs I'd be on cloud nine right now. I'll try my explodey experiment later. Tried and true worked just fine, although my wife wanted to kill me because of the smell! LOL.

Gpa, what are your thoughts on decarbing for dabs? I know you decarb for edibles but do you normally do it for dabs as well? I read that dabbing undecarbed CCO wastes some as it vaporizes without converting. I wish I still enjoyed smoking because the smell is so much like what we used to call hash oil. Damn, I used to love me some hash oil.

Another question, oh wise one. Your concentrate cooked down to a hard consistency. I vacuumed out the alcohol until no more gas was bubbling out then held it there for another 30 minutes, then decarbed the CCO at 248F for 35 minutes. All bubbling had stopped. I had a thermistor in the CCO so I know I hit proper temps. Mine is still liquid, albeit a very thick liquid. Did I do something wrong?

When you decarb it will make the product runny. Same if you use too high of temps to boil stuff off. Well that's how it works in my world.

Had you left it "undecarbed" (as you called it) and out for a couple days it would likely have stabilized more.

Same with my dabs. If they are a bit gooey, after a week they are more like a snap and pull consistency.

I’m glad it helped.

Hahaha! I don’t decarb if I’m going to dab it. You’re doing it way better than I am bud. TMD is correct. If you leave it alone and “undecarbed” it will stabalize a lot more. It won’t burn off all the good terpines either. Although, your way may preserve terps much better than an old dude in a shop using a toaster oven...

Exactly! Thanks.

"Undecarbed" LOL
Thanks, Dabbers. I wasn't sure since I'm new to this CCO stuff.

My write-up is here: EtOH extraction with vacuum purge

Beautiful! I’m headed that way bud.

Since I make my tinctures with everclear 190 proof, I always dilute it with some juice so that I can hold it under the tongue without burning. The taste isn't an issue for me.

I can handle the taste, but I’m not fond of it...when I make tinctures, but mixing with juice might just dilute it enough for me to swallow. I’m going to give that a shot...no pun intended. :Namaste: Thanks!

I measure out my dose of tincture in a shot glass, add two drops of liquid stevia sweetener, and then add water to fill shot glass. It’s dilute enough and sweet enough that I can just down the shot with no problem.

I’m a real puss when it comes to taking a shot like that. I don’t know why. Always have had a problem with it. I can do capsules or gummy’s with no issues, but liquid causes me problems for some reason. Even just a little bit and I gag. It would be easier in a shot glass...takes time to fill capsules. LOL!

I made CCO using the QWET method. Whether it's liquid, wax, honeycomb, or shatter it's all CCO, right? Just different forms of the same thing. Maybe CCO is a misuse of terms though because there's no oil added. Just pure trichomey goo.
edit: maybe it should be CCR? concentrated cannabis resin. :)

OH! For some reason I've been thinking CCO had something to do with coconut oil all this time... *stamps forehead with dullard*

And it might! I'm a babe in the woods with this stuff and I could be using the wrong term. Greater minds will set us straight, I'm sure.

So crazy you bring that up. I'd just been researching the roots of the Zep song "Gallows Pole" which took me to Lead Belly. Then researching Lead Belly I found that CCR covered two of his songs, "Cotton Fields" and "Midnight Special." Small world. Connections like that give me chills. There's more at work than mere coincidence.
And yeah, I just went transcendental on your ass. Ha! :Namaste:
