Gardenfaerie Auto Fem - CFL to Greenhouse

Thanks to all you subscribers. I have nothing new to report other than I washed spider mites off again yesterday. I'm not very concerned. Buds are not really moving as fast as they should, slow but steady I guess...photos tomorrow.

mites suck. I know you can make a natural spray and spray it everywhere for a week straight and they'll be gone if the dose is right

What is this natural spray? I wondered if the plants in flower can also be sprayed? I don't want the fatty acids in the insecticidal soap to melt the trichs off. What is this spray you are talking about? Right now I just spray everything off with water and it definitely cuts them down fast.

Have a look at foggers gf, and once you get rid of them there are plenty of precautions that might give you a clue as to where they came from. I have a quarantine area that all incoming vegetation go to when they arrive. I dip all my clones in a mixture of 2% milk and water...50/50%, let em sit a few minutes and rinse. I try to keep people out of my grow area...especially other growers....they might bring in something nasty. Keep the place as clean as possible, and filter intake air. The mites occur for different reasons..........mostly from hitchiking in on someone or something.

Exactly how do you apply this method Mack and can you use fat-free milk? That's what we drink.

I'm sure fat free milk will work, take the clone by the root cube....which is how they usually come commercially, or for your own clones just get ahold of the clone by whatever container it's in, turn it upside down and dip it....all the way in the milk water solution. Set the clone aside and get another one and continue....just leave it on the clones for a few or a coupla minutes and then rinse them with suitable water. You just want the plant itself to become immersed...no part of the root system.

I didn't have mites when the plants were in the closet, but they are out in the greenhouse and I probably had mites on something else out there. It's not a complete infestation. But when I do harvest, whenver that may be (these plants are S L O W for autos) I don't want to smoke spider mites or their poo!

What sort of fogger? I will not use any pesticides other than contact. I suppose I could use the insecticidal soap and/or orange oil. I was just concerned about the trichomes and if I'd wash them away using fatty acids to kill the insects. I'll put up a photo of the plants...

Not great photos, but you get the idea.

No great photos; Are you kidding me Brooklyn!

Well, not near as good as some I've seen. I have been wanting a really
good SLR for such a long time. One day. Actually, I should try taking photos using my film camera. Remember them? haha

Do these plants look like they could use some nitrogen? The very light green...what is that? How come I can't apply my horticulture to this? Geez, this plant is the KING of all everything!

Yep, some nitrogen, what we are willing to do and not do really depends on what we are willing to accept as the finished product, last summer I lost about 50 lbs because I had to chop early because of a worm infestation, if there would have been another way I surely would have done it. Foggers are just like the ones you use in your house, but these are cannabis specific and are designed to treat cannabis related issues. If I have plants that are organic...and they are nitrogen deficient.....I mean they need it now, and not two weeks after I do an application.......I'm going to use human urine...I don't want to, but it is a choice that I have to make...wait for my plants to get worse....or do something I don't really care to do.......life is choices......it has to work for me every time...first time.....no do overs

Okay, I'll fertilize with N and I will pass on my urine! Girls have a harder time with that whole thing! I'm curious why you couldn't use Bt-K for worms with excellent results. What kind of worms were they? 50 pounds is a LOT to lose. I'm sorry to hear it.

Yep bt may have worked.....I requested it through the group.......and it never arrived. That was a big lesson for me...it cost me alot. In a coop situation there needs to be #1; good communication, and #2; there needs to be one person who is going to lead and give approvals for treatments...and then they need to get done. I picked bugs every day off those plants and I still got way more than I lost, I did NOT have complete control over the situation, that's why I have control issues...LOL. We seemed to have every flavour of worm ever designed.....spotty ones, stripy ones..........I originally identified cabbage moth larvae.

You can make a tea with your organic n and they'll get it a little faster.......

You may already know this, but maybe you can present the powers that be with a new approach. Since it definitely sounds like you have butterflies (they are worms with stripes of all kinds, dots, etc.) so why not plant the neighboring areas with milkweed? Butterflies will not touch cannabis if there is Asclepias anywhere around, or any number of larval host plants. It is called a "catch crop." I use it all the time for aphids. I happen to use the native Guara lindheimerii and the aphids LOVE that. As a result, I attract a swarm of ladybeetles. Last year I couldn't believe how many we had, naturally. Also, green lacewings, and a number of beneficial wasps and flies. Planting host plants is also the right thing to do in lieu of killing them. IMO

Thanks gf, I'm a thousand miles from last summers work...LOL......we have em here too, but in very limited numbers. Good idea planting hosts for the bugs.........pheromone traps have been suggested too, maybe I'll do a little of both and see what works best. Good thing about where I'm at now, I ask for something and I get it!

GF, you can make your own mite spray with essential oil of rosemary or rosemary + citronella. There are many recipes out there. They are most commonly named as repellants. Neem oil is a good mite buster, or better yet azatrol or azamax (both ORMI certified.) Those two products contain azadirachtin which is the active ingredient in neem oil. I would rather not use azatrol outdoors since it will mess up beneficial insects and pollinators, too. Contained in the greenhouse I would use azatrol to wipe out the mites.

Some folks use spinosad in conjunction with neem or a azadirachtin product. Spinosad is also OMRI certified. It's what they put in stuff to kill head lice and fleas on people or pets. The spinosad is a neurological toxin for the bugs - not thrilled with neurologic toxins so I would avoid that one.

Look into the azatrol or azamax. They will clean up the mites quickly and have a VERY short half-life. I judge them safe when you are still weeks away from harvest.
