Fools Rush In: Newbie's Adventures In Suboptimal Conditions

I want there godfather og...I think stonedotter is growing some. I checked out weedseedsexpress. They have some great looking strains and excellent comments on their customer service all over this community.
godfather og is top of my list... i ordered chiquita banana a few weeks back

What you running now @Preston9mm ?
Big ol' variety... of course. LoL

The oldest in the group are 2 Northern Lights from Phoenix seeds. They are at week 9 now.
Just flipped; Blueberry, Appleberry, Mimosa Bop, Black Cherry Bop, Peppermint Kush, and Critical Jack.

Veg box has 6 reg seedlings; 2- Balls Deep, 2- DTF, and 2- Gaslit Grape.

:ciao: I thought I was already subbed here... but not and I’ve missed much I’m sure. Looking forward to the rest of it tho!!

Panama.
Probably a long flower time but I'm sure if the genes are true it would be worth it.
Hi jjj :) Actually ACE seeds have one that’s a super stabilised cross of three Landrace lines. It doesn’t have an extraordinarily long flowering time and it remains a pure landrace sativa

Thank you Amy. I'll go check that out.

Which three lines, Amy?
Panama combines 3 excellent sativas from Panama. It is one of the most popular, powerful and high yielding sativa in our catalog.

Very elaborated hybrid of great potency and vegetative vigor. It produces beautiful, large, dense flowers full of trichomes, often showing reddish and pinkish pistils when flowering, traits usually associated with the mythic Panama Red and Colombia Punto Rojo strains.
:Namaste:

Edit: wait , that’s not the right bit!! BRB

... I can’t find the thing I’ve read before that says a lot more about it. The ice version is an F8F 12 stabilised hybrid of three Panamanian varieties. Has a flowering period of 9 to 12 weeks

I lived in Panama for 3yrs and sampled some excellent trippy as hell bud.
Northern Lights is a classic for me. It’s the first really good smoke I got into in the mid 90s.
I briefly worked on the canal in 2012, and very good Panamanian herb was still around! :smokin:

I love hearing about what you all used to smoke!!

It's so different for me. Buying and growing these seeds is the only way I will ever experience these cultivars.

Living in NZ and under prohibition conditions, I've never known what herb my plugs have provided over the years. The exception being 'White Rhino' at some point.

In the Instagram and Reddit era, there now seems to be more community and discourse around the seeds and cultivars that are here. That will be a parallel investigation for me. NZ may even have some 'landraces'?

Don't get me wrong - I'm sure there have been a bunch of growers and breeders in this country who have the knowledge and experience, but of course that has never been accessible to me as a consumer.

@Weedseedsexpress have been an absolute joy to communicate and deal with. A++ customer service.

Goddamnit P9!! That list makes me drool. Maybe one day we'll move out of this one room apartment and I won't have to agonise over my one tiny bonsai. :laughtwo:

Amy, so happy to have you here! You have missed some shenanigans and drama but we all know life has an endless supply of those, lol!

How could I have forgotten to mention Panama?

I've been picking up things about breeding here and there, and was listening to someone talk about the possibility of backcrossing to recover Panama Red.

But I don't know how 'backcrossing' works. I'm still a bit hazy on the mechanics of breeding but I'm intrigued by it all!

I've met some fantastic nz growers in the past. There's some great ones here as well. Someday you will join those ranks. Your interest in research and the practice of doing it will pay off.

Thank you! That's very kind of you.

Yeah, apparently we have Oregon-like growing conditions over here! Fingers crossed legalisation goes through. This country would make a perfect herb-growing hub, in so many ways.

Off topic but...I used to chat regular with a tobacco grower over there. Amazing gardener. I used to try n get him to grow herb. He never bit. He posted many pics of the are he lived...I don't remember the location but it was beautiful.

happy to have you here!
Thanks Sy!

The Panama Ace sell is Panama Red. About 85% of them express the red/pink stigmas. I have one going at the moment which seems to be one of the green phenos ... Still early days tho. Not sure if the colour is there from the outset w the red or not. Maybe it will come on...

Have you discovered the Landrace thread here at 420mag? Lots of great info and the opening posts are a really great read :)

Ok, great intel, thank you! Hearing lots and lots of good things about ACE.

Yes!! That thread is amazing. I also read the "Origins of the species" piece and it was a great narrative.

Hi Carl, it's great you got your seeds. Here in NZ it's the land of beggars can't be choosers in that regard, we're just delighted to get a resend arrive after months of failed deliveries!

For most of my toking life I have had no knowledge of strains, they've simply been either fantastic, mediocre or poor. And possibly a lot of the poor stuff may have seemed that way because people didn't always know about optimal harvesting times.

I'm spending a lot of time browsing the seed bank sites and looking at strain reviews trying to best narrow down a selection that would be ideal for me. Ideally I'd like several strains of different qualities, one that knocks my socks off and even provides an astral travel high for evenings when I have no other commitments, one for daytime, which I currently have a not bad home bred Widow/Gorgonzola cross but I wonder what a 'proper' bred daytime strain would be like. And after reading a lot of positive posts on medical strains I think getting a good CBD strain would be handy too, not sure on a high CBD low THC strain like Candida, or a high 1:1. Of course that's only 3 categories, it'd be nice to go further and have some sub categories too. :ganjamon:

The puzzle I have, is what are the best? Should I be looking at older known strains like AK47, Jack Herer, Bubblegum etc etc, those strains that made their names 2 decades ago, or have those older benchmark strains now been superseded by some of the many newer modern hybrids which haven't yet become as well known?
Woohooooo! Seeds! Glad they showed up for ya!

Also love your stories about what it was like back in the day.

Yeah, I just learnt quite a lot about the history of modern cannabis (in the western world). From the early sativas to the revolutionary introduction of the indica. Now there’s concern about the small genetic pool and the lack of diversity there.

I’m keen to try the newest gelato-cookie-cake-dos, mango-sherbert-fizz-banana-watchamacallits, as well as some of the classics. The more “formative” cultivars: Skunk, Haze, Chemdawg, OG Kush, Northern Lights etc.

And not to mention the landraces!
Yea in end I can't complain I can't get bag seeds cause thats a needle in hay stack. I also have what seems to be good source where I can get 5 packs from good breeders for $60 after shipping. If I could I buy em n ship to both of u for cost of seeds n shipping to u. The 1s I got I gave 1 to some1 at work. They got me a quarter of some good stuff:blunt:It was a ty cause he saved me a lot compared to dispensary. Plus he has mentioned wanting to grow. Unless u get real weight like a quarterpound seeds rare. Even at qp rare. Plus from dealer so unless u really know they could say kush could be just good bud. Not big deal but still u kinda want to know if seeds really that. But yea gave it to him told him let it grow. He's just gotta do a hidden grow cause of wife and kids. But yea if I could I would fly around dropping seeds on the world yelling let it grow. I will try ordering then sending to u both. Just be price cause knowing me I will ship em in a safe :D.

Also @syenite you questioned to cloning cause not certain sex. Easy way to tell males have a ball with 1 to 2 pistols on stem. Females just pistols. Not bud like pistols just a little triangle. Males deeper it kinda stacks colas. Colas look stacked like almost a bud. But in between no bud pistols. I got a male mystery chemdawg but also a female. If really chemdawg be omg tuff to grow and omg smoke. Got it once in preroll and wash fire. Just tuff grow. Anyway I will try n take pics of my male and female to show. If crap pics then just show what I'm saying. You could flick lights to flower mode and 1st sign of it flick back to veg no issue. Then you can practice cloning.

I agree about bag seed or seeds of unknown strains, it is true you can get a diamond but yes, it can be a needle in a haystack to find. As I grow outdoors there is only one growing season each year so I feel less inspired to take a punt on unknowns and then have to wait a whole another year to try again The answer to me is to first establish what are the best strains/breeders out there to aim for. I am trying to take notes on what people are praising to make a (hopefully short) list of strains/breeders I'd like. It is very tricky, amongst the strains that I noted down, was Serious Seeds: AK47 & Bubblegum, but I was reading the other day where someone had posted that they thought the genetics of both of those were now no longer as good as they once were. So it is confusing trying to pinpoint primo top shelf seeds that are marketed now and relevant as opposed to being really good once upon a time. Humboldt, DNA, Snow High & In House Seeds seem to be often spoken of as top shelf. My hope with some proper top shelf strains that I can reverse out a few and make a whole bunch of seeds so I don't have to struggle to get some. It'd be great to do a Jonny Appleseed and drop them all around the country! Cheers. :hookah:
