First Time Grow

I've attached a screenshot from a movie by Dr. Bruce Bugbee. I started growing early last year and grow in hydro, per the journals in my sig block.

The graphics pertains to both hydro and soil but I think it's more important for hydro because things happen more quickly in hydro. I've read more than one posting about a hydro grower who added too much of x, y, or z and his plants were gone the next AM. That's not to scare anyone but just to have a heightened sense of awareness when doling out chemicals.

Nutes
Thinking of chemicals… are you stocked with a pH pen and an EC pen?

I didn't see a response about adding Hydroguard vs sterile. My choice is Hydroguard - add it to the nutes and forget about it.

Oxygen - an air stone of some
I might get this. Any other cheaper recommendations or better for the price?

I bought the non-wireless model about a year ago and it's worked fine. It's even better added WiFi. Then again, everything's better with WiFi, isn't it?

Hello and thanks for the reply. As of now I have two PH tests. One pen and one where I have to mix a solution up. I don’t have one for nutrients yet (financial reason). I will go to the hydro store today to look at available hydro guard options. I should have gone with the wireless but again finances. I’m just starting so much of these things I’ll pick up over time. But my initial sticker shock of what I’ve already purchased needs to grow deeper in the past before I start getting fancier equipment:)

Did first real reservoir change today. Shopped all over town for a black 5 gallon bucket. Can’t find anywhere. I settled for the dark blue lowes buckets and a couple cans of spray paint.

Better then yesterday. I hurt her feelings. I had the light set to high and she let me know all about it yesterday. Her leaves were all pointing down and had developed a slight taco look near the stems. So my diagnosis was too much light. But dropped it 10% and raised it 4” and she seems to be better today.

Understand completely. It's like the definition of a boat "A hole in the water into which you pour money." :)

HydroGuard or using hydrogen peroxide is pretty much a "must spend money on" thing. Things can go bad in hours if you get root rot. After that, pH and EC pens. They're about $40 in total and they make things a lot easier.

Re. the light - Spider Farmer has info on lighting. Forget the illustrations but the numbers are a good starting point.

Today is a good day. Leaves look the best they’ve been since I started. Yesterday however I noticed some slight discoloration in some of the older longer roots. Pretty sure it’s root Rot caused by my early reservoir change. I did stop and get some stuff to hopefully curb the sickness.

Are your root slimy or smelly? They could just be stained from nutes or hydroton dust. Do the roots rinse off?

Honestly been scared to touch them. It all happened right after I made the transfer.

Can I just cut them off?
LKA's asking the important question - do they smell//are they slimy vs having the smell of "clean dirt" and just being stained by the nutes.

Cutting off roots is brutal to a plant but that might be the only way to deal with it. Negative knowledge on how to deal with it. Maybe someone can chime in or do a posting in the "sick plant" section.
