First CFL Grow Using 30 Watt CFLs

hey no probs, the more the better, im pretty new to growing, like i said my last grow was 9 years ago and it was my favourite strain jack flash which i cant seem to find the same strain but would love to grow that again, loved the smell and the tangyness, a sort of cat piss amonia type smell, hard to explain but you knew it was jack flash as soon as you caught a wiv of it, it stood out from other weeds and skunks by miles, hoping to find that strain again, but back then i bought a clone put it in a 5gallon pot and watered it with miracle grow, vegd way to long and had a monster 5ft plant, now im trying to do it properly, well the best i can so thats why im here and not doing all this on my own without any help or advice.

as for the soil mixture i cant really say, all i used was some cheap compost from my local supermarkets, it says it contains jonns innes or something like that, its meant to be better than miracle grow which i have been told is not much good for seedlings due to high nute content but people use it and grow well with it,

as for the best mixture i know someone else will jump in and give you the best advice on that as i mixed nothing in with mine, possibly some perrlite would be worth mixing in, even a 50-50 mix would be ok i think, i may get told other wise very soon by the expert growers who check in on my grow, so all i used was basic everyday compost without any slow release nutes or stuff like that as it causes problems down the line,

this is what my compost says it is made up from, it cost me £1 from my local super market, but it seems to work so ive stuck with it so it says this, produced from high quality sphagnum peat enhanced with high quality sustainable peat replacements, so reading that it looks like it has got something added to it, can anyone jump in and explain what that means and even if this is the best compost to use, it says it includes trace elements of lime, it also says a special wetting agent as been added, but think this is mostly advertisement as to me it looks like the kind of stuff you could dig up in any forest, ive not had no problems with bugs or even weeds growing in it so it must be treated and sorted well, no bits of plastic like sum brands, when i squash a ball of it together and open my hands it falls a part so it dont clump up at all, its not to wet out the bag so it dont go soggy, to me it seems the right mix of everything and my plants seem to like it.

anyways im just taking the mutt for a quick walk then i got some nice pictures of my plants to share with you all, give me 30min and ill have them on here, just gota take the dog for a quick scouting mission find some snidy outdoor growing area, looks like summer is on its way so im planning on getting a few outdoors, i have got 2 plants growing from seed ready to go outdoors when the weather is right, sort of giving them a boost.

pictures will follow shortly people

Thanks for the info about the soil donpaul. I started out in MG but it was a garden mix and my plants just stopped growing in it. Then I went an picked up some 1.98 a bag soil, supposed to be potting soil but was really full of additives (plastic, rocks, chunks of bark and large trigs) sifted it for all the large stuff - repeating what I told you already. I will find something better for my next grow or mix something up on my own with lots of perlite and vermuclite. Peace out brother.:thumb: Plants are looking nice, you started about 10 days after me and yours look alot better and are way further ahead. :goodjob:

thanks, im just uploading todays pics now so they will be in my next post, the compost im using cost £1 per 15litre bag so im buying it really cheap, i get it from asda in UK which is part of the walmart chain, its a big out of town super market that i live near to, so thats all ive been using, nothing else, nothing expensive, ive added nothing at all to it, i just add nutes every time i feed, im planning on flushing the soil the last week of flower then not watering the last 2 or 3 days to dry out the soil and plant as much as i can before i harvest it, as long as i dont have any problems on the way then thats my plan, just putting the pics up now so you can have a look, my plants where slow to start off with also, and its only since using bpn products that my plants have really started growing,

this is the g13poisen dwarf auto, thinking its possibly in flower

these pics are whats in my flower room, their is 1 2ltr hempie missing as i moved it to take the pic
PICT1704.JPG

these next few are the special kush i think, id need to check label on pot to be sure, next time i take pics ill label properly, but this is more than likely the special kush, it was topped during veg and had lst done on it
PICT1703.JPG

PICT1702.JPG

PICT1701.JPG

the start of some very nice buds im hoping
PICT1700.JPG

this next pic is the branches that have grown up from the lower nodes and these are all nearly level with the top of the plant this is one of the branches from the very bottom nodes of the plant
PICT1699.JPG

PICT1698.JPG

here in the pic below you can clearly see how long the stem of the branch is as i pulled it out so you can all see how the lst worked out
PICT1697.JPG

PICT1696.JPG

PICT1695.JPG

PICT1691.JPG

these pics below are the northern lights cross big bud femenised, so the pics above are the special kush for sure
PICT1690.JPG

PICT1689.JPG

this plant was also topped and lst'd so as you can see its not very tall but has plenty of top bud sites, im hoping this means im going to get loads of buds, but each day the branches are still growing taller and taller so i should get some nice buds of it im hoping, what do you all think
PICT1688.JPG

PICT1687.JPG

PICT1686.JPG

i think this nl x bb fem is showing more signs of sativa gene than indica so im hoping im going to get a nice daytime smoke from this and a bed time smoke out of the special kush, im looking for a good strong indica to help with sleep and also a nice day time smoke like jack flash, would love some jack flash but need to find the right strain, does anyone have any ideas what kind of indica would be best to knock me out at night and something nice and fruity for the daytime,

below is a pic of the ak47 cross uk berry cheese, looks like a very nice plant, hoping it gives a nice smoke but not sure what to expect, i was going to plant a a reserva privada sour kush femenised but now these ak look so well ill leave them, their also known as the strain headband, has anyone heard of the strain or tried it,
https://www.420magazine.com/gallery/data/500/PICT1674.JPG
this is the ak 47 x uk bc thats under 12-12 from seed, im not getting much stretch as told i would but maybe that has something to do with the dual spectrum hps, not sure but possibly
PICT1673.JPG

1 x 2ltr hempie below, roots are growing down out of the inner bottle but not in the liquid goodness yet
PICT1671.JPG

now below is the 2ltr hempie that got badly burned by the light so i had to top it to remove the dead and remove all the leaves, the problem is now its got 4 main cola sites so would it be best to plant it in a bigger pot and use another for the 2ltr hempie or would 4 main cola on a 2ltr hempie be ok
PICT1670.JPG

PICT16681.JPG

you can clearly see the 4 tops i think topping it this early when the nodes are that close together has given me 4 tops i wonder if topping this early would give the same results everytime, it has 2 shoots from the top and the node below has got 2 shoots growing now at the same height, i topped it and had to remove all the big leaves so all i was left with was the stem and a tiny amount of growth at the nodes, so this plant had no leaves bigger than 2cm after and it ended up like this
PICT16671.JPG

i know their is loads to look at and i have not took any pictures of my veg room yet, thats just all i have got in my flower room so let me know what you think, good or bad, any advice or questions am i doing ok or am i doing anything wrong, what can i improve or needs improving.
thanks for looking everyone, i gota keep thanking teSmp for hooking me up with the nutes and also corey at bpn, and please people if your considering buying nutes then head to blue planets nutrients and get it from them, the nutes work wonders and can be used at full strength and i really did notice my plants explode with growth withing 48 hours of using bpn even using cfls,
i grew all these plants using cfls its only recently i switched to hps due to the watts i was using working out the same so it was the way to go, i still use cfls for veg and they really do work, cheap to set up and they got my plants into flower im just finishing them off with the hps

i duno bout that mate, its only the last 2 weeks my plants have exploded, i gota say that using cfls the plants seem to grow very slow and gain very little height, cfls keep the plants low and bushy ok, i was hoping to flower at 1 ft high and end up with 3 ft plants, but my plants struggled to get past 8 inches high due to using cfls, so cfls do work and you will get good results, but the plants do very little stretching, possibly raising the lights to about 1 ft might cause some stretch but i tried adding more 2700k cfls and got no to little stretch so i thought id share that and let other cfl growers know the same as i found, and that was very little stretch and thats why my plants are like they are, i would of wanted them a slightly bit bigger but cfls made sure they was staying small and very bushy,

but its only been the last couple of weeks that the plants have really taken off, but i have noticed that the ak47 cross are growing better under cfl and seem to be growing quicker so im not sure if its strain related or what but the ak47 seems to be getting taller than the main plants i have in flower, but ive got some under veg under cfls so ill be able to compare the height level as time goes by.

but im loving the way my plants have turned out, im loving the way it looks so even and covered in bud sites, it was hard work and i asked loads of questions to get where i am and i got loads of advice, so thanks everyone for all the help and advice and hopefully im going to have something decent to show for it when its all done and harvested,

hey no probs, the more the better, im pretty new to growing, like i said my last grow was 9 years ago and it was my favourite strain jack flash which i cant seem to find the same strain but would love to grow that again, loved the smell and the tangyness, a sort of cat piss amonia type smell, hard to explain but you knew it was jack flash as soon as you caught a wiv of it, it stood out from other weeds and skunks by miles, hoping to find that strain again,
Jack Flash for Don

thanks for the link, ill be ordering some for my next grow, the write up says it all, makes my mouth water just reading about it, its the plant i loved so im hoping the strain has stayed the same, thanks a lot

I have been letting my buckets dry out as you advised and my girls (hopefully, will have some pics for you to study for me later tonight) are IMO looking alot better. They have grown too, about 1 1/2 inches, well at least 2 have I should say, the other 2 are still slugish and yucky looking still. The 2 largest are 13" and 15". Do you known when corey from BPN is going to be back, I sure would like to start a regime with his products. I will be very pleased if 2 of my ladies turn out looking half as good as yours do. KUDO's :rollit:RoorRip:cheertwo:

good to hear your plants are looking better, chances are the roots where water logged and possibly started rotting, let it dry out before watering again, and when you do water and add nutes add them watered down so as not so shock the plant, been as you have flushed the soil chances are you have taken all the goodness out as well, so the first time you feed you will need to add nutes, normally when you have to flush as a last resort you flush with water that contains a week mixture of nutes, else the plant has got nothing to take in after everything has been taken out the soil, these plants will keep growing even when all the water has gone out the soil so you only need to water when the pots are dry, you can poke you fingers down the edge of the pot and get down about 3 or 4 inches and if you pull you fingers out and soil is stuck to them then it probably wont need watering, but if you pull them out and its dry then water, the best way i have found is to fill a pot of the same size with dry compost and then compare the pots with the plant in to these, now as the plants get bigger they will add weight but its still the best method i have found of checking when to water. my 2 biggest plants are in full flower and im watering every 4 days, even though my temps are up the pots still feel wet enough after 3 days and the plants are not showing any signs of wilting or any defficiency, most new growers including myself over watered them all the time thinking they needed water due to the top of the pot been dry, but the top 2 inches can be dry due to the temp but the rest of the pot can still be soaking wet, and these plants dont like soaking wet, they like time to dry out and the roots get oxygen out the soil, but keeping them water logged will give you loads of stunted growth and root rot in the end.

People i think i have got a problem, im not sure if i have caused the damage as its not the whole plant, or if i have dropped something on the part im going to tell you about, but i dont have anything i can drop on the plants liquid wise.
anyway this is what i have found, on the one plant their is a stem thats not the highest with bud growing on it, now the bud at the end of the branch dont look like the buds on the rest of the plant or the other plant, the 2 leaves either side at the bottom of the bud went brown and crispy and when i touched them they fell off and was bone dry and crumbled like they had been burned, then when i looked at the bud it wasnt the usualy healthy white colour like the rest of the buds, it looked like it had been burned, the white hairs had gone brown and retracted and it does look like its been burned, then the next bud down at the node below has got the same look to it, the leaf has gone brown, on closer inspection the stem at the top where the main bud is has a funny colour to it, it looks like it has been burned with a lighter or has got 2 close to the light, the problem is this bud is one of the lower ones at the side so if the light was burning the plant then it would of burned the buds that was say 4 inches closer to the light that than this one, i dont have any undiluted nutes around the plants, i dont get any nute mixture on the leaves, i dont have any liquids above the plant apart from when i spray water on the plants to mist them, this water i let stand for at least 24 hours.

so im getting concerned, the rest of the plant looks perfect, all the other buds look perfect, i have inspected the whole plant, every branch and bud, now im not sure what has caused it, it has not been near the light, its a lower bud site, but when i touched the leaf attatched to the bottom of the bud it just fell off, now the leafs fingers hand closed in at the middle and gone brown the very end still looked green in colour, but the leaf was bone dry and crumbled, its as if it didnt get any water, but it hasnt dried out like wilted, it dried out and went crispy.

now i have checked the plant i found this on and the other, their is no other signs of this anywhere, i noticed it a couple of days ago but thought it might be where i touched the plant, but when i looked today it was dry, the bud looks like its gone dry and the white pistils have gone a burned brown colour.

the rest if the plant is fine, the next node down looks like its got the same problem, but it has spread no further than that, is it something i have caused, its not heat related unless my bulb or reflector has some how caused a heat spot on just that one part of the branch and the one bud, or is it some kind of nute burn or nute lock out, their is no other signs of nute problems on the rest of the plant and it looks really healthy, its just that one bud that has the problem, is it worth me cutting the branch out to prevent it spreading just in case it does spread, i could cut the branch at the stem and use it as a clone and cut the bud off, ill take a picture of it tomorrow before i pull it, im not sure what it is or whats caused it, if the plant had other signs of stress then i could understand it, but its just one branch and the main bud, it honestly looks like i have held the plant close to the light and its frazzled the bud and leaves,

cud it be nute lock out issues, but wouldnt i notice this on the rest of the plant, bearing in mind i noticed this bud 3 days ago and its not affected any of the rest of the plant or other bud sites, apart from this one bud the plant looks amazing and perfectly healthy, should i cut it off and make a clone out of it, should be giving me super cropped results,

i would really like some words of wisdom and some help on what the problem could be, but the rest of the plant seems un-affected but if i left the bud on the plant would it spread, now where the bud is on the branch it has turned the branch a dark colour exactly where the bud is, so is this a problem im getting with the plant or a hot spot from my light, the reflector is hammered metal type so its the best reflector but not sure if it gives hot spots like foil would, im really at a loss to what it is, ive read guides on how to spot def problems but their is nothing like it listed, ill try searching the net, im hoping someone can jump in and help me, could it be something i had on my hands when i touched the plant, or is this something thats going to cause me a problem, ill try and take a pic tomorrow but with my camera i dont think ill get good pics, i did taste the burned leaf matter and it tasted harsh and had a real nasty taste to it,

quick update on my dwarf auto, it has started growing a bit taller now, not sure if they are just pre flowers as i can start to see the bulge at the base of the hair where its going to form buds, but it has got taller in the last 2 days so im hoping it is now in its stretch and might suprise me and give me more back,

my microscope came today, it is a 60x scope, i had a look at some of the leaves i pulled off to get light into the plant, now the big fan leaves but smaller ones, i only pulled 2 off, and looking with my eyes they looked like the leaves do when in veg, but i used my microscope and the whole of the leaf was covered in tiny white crystals, would this be trics, they are tiny and this was not a bud leaf but its seems covered in like snowy crystals, only tiny but can be seen with microscope i have been throwing leaves away as i have pulled them from the plant mainly in veg stage, so next time i pull leaves in veg im going to have a look and check for these crystals, but are they crystals im looking at or something else, if they are crystals then id be better off keeping the leaves and using them for hash a few grows down the line.

can someone please put my mind at rest about the one bud problem im getting, the leaf that fell off and crubled tasted very harsh, i tend to put the odd leaf in my mouth when i take them off, not sure why i know i aint getting nothing off it, guess its just habbit, so i noticed a huge difference in taste from this leaf to the normal leaves, i dont eat them just habbit sort of thing, like having a cig in my mouth, but anyway i decided to taste it and check if i could taste any difference and as soon as it touched my tongue i spat it out cuz it was so harsh, please tell me this is an isolated issue and not a problem with the plant, id hate to lose the whole plant at this stage, id get nothing off it if i had to cut it down now, i dont think ill have to do that due to the whole plant looking healthy its just this one bud, could it be burn from the fan blowing directly on it, im not sure if it did. just trying to think what could of caused it.
it looks just like it would if you had put a lighter to close to the bud and leaves thats the kind of look it had to it, the hairs on the bud had shrivvled and looked burnt, thats the best i can explain, ill try take a pick when the lights back on tomorrow, im just uploading a few pics not that i took before the lights went off but none of the damage, ill post them seperate tomorrow

Things looking great in there don.p! Like the new light. Your plants couldn't be healthier bro. They good LST'd like that, you'l get a nice even canopy of fat buds :bravo: +Rep

jack flash ordered, im so hoping it the same strain, i should be able to tell as soon as it starts smelling, the last time i grew it 9 years ago i vegd it for way to long as i didnt have a clue what i was doing and when it finished the plant was 6ft high, the pot was 1ft and the plant 5 ft, i got a huge yield off it and it was an amazing smoke and i grew this in basic compost and used miracle grow as a nute, i took cuttings by simply using a razor blade and cutting the stem dipping it in root powder and placed it strait into a pot and watered and every single one grew i never lost one, i didnt know what i was doing but i got over 9oz off the plant, i wouldnt want to grow it this big this time, but i didnt know anything last time, so hoping ill have a decent female to mother as i would keep the strain mothered and cloned, to give me a nice smoke, i loved sitting on the beach or going for a walk and smoking some flash, you could always tell when someone had flash cuz it had one of them smells that stood out from all other cannabis plants, does anyone know of any other really fruity tangy strains, ive not much experience with growing so dont know many plants, but would love to get some nice tangy sativa for day time smoke.

in stock in my seed bank, well in my drawer basically i have got some seeds that i have not grown yet, all where free when i bought some seeds, do any of these have that tangy smell and have any of you grew these strains, i held back as i was unsure of what to expect,
this is what i have got in seed, i dont want to spend any more money on seeds yet unless i know its going to be something i love, all i have been buying is cheap seeds and been getting some very nice seeds for free, so ill spend say 2 quid on 1 seed and end up getting 3 free, im after something very tangy and fruity, i want something amazing for a daytime out door smoke that wont make me fall asleep and not want to move, then for the night to help me sleep i would love some potent indica either pure strain or a cross, im hopinh some of the expert growers on here could advice me on the seeds i have got and what to expect, i know i can read the write up on the seed but its not the same as someone growing it, so if you have any ideas what i should expect from any of these then let me know and if its something im looking for then ill soak one and flower it next time round.
2 x big bud #2, this is the plant that went hermie on me, but it grew the best so will try this at a later date, ive had big bud before so thinking its the same strain.

2 x reserva privada sour kush femenised, these 2 and big bud where free from herbies, this strain is also called head band as well if that helps any of you, it sounds very fruity but wasnt sure so didnt want to soak one unless i knew for sure as i have got some small plants growing all ready but if it is a very tangy fruity smoke then ill soak a seed as i have got the room not ive got the bigger light, i should be able to get about 9 plants in 3gallon pots or a shed load of hempies, ive got 2 hempies growing at the minute so ill check the yield before i go down that road.

1 x california skunk haze, ive smoked a few haze strains but not sure what this one is

1 x afghan skunk femenised.

thats what i have got in stock at the moment, im undecided on wether to soak one of them or not, like i said i have got the room, some of my clones will be flowered next time round, but i think i can fit more plants in now im using the bigger light, im thinking i could get 9 plants as long as i didnt veg them for to long, but the problem with mixing sativa and indica is plant height so i will need to train the taller plants,

basically what im trying to do is keep some in veg while i flower these off now then when they have flowered off i can move the plants in that i have got in veg at the minute, when i have got these in flower im not going to soak any seeds until the plants in flower have nearly finished, cuz for my third go at this i want to veg under the dual spec hps instead of cfls, so im hoping ill have enough smoke off the 1st 2 grows to see me through till then, might last me or might not, but i want a start under hps and compare the rate of growth to the hps of the same strains, i will mother 2 plants to keep the strain if i like the special kush and nl x bb, so as long as its a good smoke ill mother 2 plants 1 of each strain, but at the moment im loving the way this ak47 looks, these plants look totally different to anything i have grown with this grow so far, they seem a healthier and higher quality plant if you can understand that, they just look totally amazing, even though they are been vegd under less light and some are 12-12 from seed like the hempies, but either way the plant looks stunning so if i have got some females im hoping for a very nice smoke,

so if any of you can advise on the seeds and what to expect then give me a shout back,

im collecting pollen from the hermie when its done and ill cross with with a fem plant, this should give me all female seeds, so im thinking about getting another auto and crossing it with that and getting an auto fem, but ive also been reading about the silver solution that makes female plants turn male so it gives strictly female seeds, doing it this way should give the same results but without having to let a male go full flower, but thats a few grows ahead of me yet, for now im collecting pollen from the hermie, and if i cross that with a female i should get fem seeds, plus i can pollenate just 1 bud site to give me a few beans,if this auto dont get much bigger and my hermie produces pollen quick enough then ill pollenate half the auto and get some seeds which should turn out to be femenised auto seeds,

thanks JBC, im hoping i havnt reduced yield by having the canopy even, it looks like they are under a scrog, its crazy how they have ended up, but what i have noticed over the last 2 days is that some bud sites are starting to grow taller then the others, so im not going to pull them down even, im thinking maybe the plant is forcing them up to be main bud sites, so in theory the plant is pushing them up to get the best chance of pollenation so im hoping ill get some main cola off them and have loads of smaller buds where the canopy is.

im so chuffed how the plants turned out, and i was worried at how slow they was growing and that they wasnt getting taller, but they have filled out since and ended up looking like they did, and touch wood that nothing goes wrong i should end up with a very decent smoke, im not expecting a huge yield but if i can get half an oz off each plant then ill be happy, i dont think ill get much more than that,

thanks for coming over and having a look though mate, thanks for the kind words

that could be a possibility i never thought of that, im using mylar, i know foil creates hot spots and can cause this, maybe mylar can as well if the plants to close to the mylar, the mylar i put up is slightly crinkled as its not off a roll its just the rescue blanket mylar but its the same stuff just slightly thinner, i know it keeps the heat in when someone is wrapped up in it as thats what its designed for so i wonder if i did get a hot spot on my plant.

i just think if it was a problem with the plant then it would of started on the leaves and buds at the very start of that branch, but when i look closer to the main stem i dont see any leaf or bud damage at the smaller inner buds and leaves, the damage seems to be only the very end bud on the branch and the bud below it and the leaves. where this damage is is where i pulled a leaf a few weeks back, so wonder if that could have anything to do with it, would losing a leaf cause the bud and smaller sweet leaf to dry up because if their is no leaf does this mean that the plant is not getting any liquid or nutrients to the end of the branch and could this be why the part closer to the plant has nothing wrong with it, it would explain it, but surely the bud itself would still bring water and nutes to it, im no expert so only guessing.

ill check for any hot spots tomorrow, ill try and smooth out the mylar a bit better to prevent it happening again, how ever i do turn the pots 180 deg every day so the plants getting a good even spread of light, ive not noticed any signs of damage to any of the other parts of the plant the rest looks really healthy, should i pull this branch off and use it as a clone, its quite a big branch length and thickness wise but im not seeing any more bud growth from the part thats damages so im thinking it wont give me anything smokable off it, ill wait till someone gives me a better idea what to do with it, ill try and take some pics when the lights on tomorrow,

ill check for hot spots or bright reflections shining directly on one bit of the plant and try and smooth out the mylar a bit just in case that is the problem, it sounds like its exactly what the problem is though, it does look likes its been to close to the light and its burned the plant, but i really cant think of any time that i would of got the plant that close to the light to cause the damage,

so for now ill check the mylar as its all ive got to go on, if their was more damage on the plant then it could be a nute problem but im not getting any signs of anything, seems very strange, its as if someone has had a lighter near the plant, but when im the only person that goes near the plants and even knows their their i know that thats is not the problem.

thats the first time in one sentence i have ever seen let along used a word that is used strait after the same word, ie their and their and thats and thats, wonder if i can come up with something that has more words that repeat like that, guess my queensvenglish is not all its cracked up to be

the problem is mate, the bit thats damaged is on the outer of the plant and lower down the most of the other buds, if it was cuz it was to close to the light then surely the buds higher up and in the middle of the plant would be damaged more than one thats lower down, the lights are off now its 3am here but lights back on at 12 so ill check when the lights back on, i need to clean the grow room out and make up some nutes so ill check everything, hot spots from mylar i dont think the reflector is the issue as its hammered metal finish so shouldnt produce any hot spots

actually thinking about the light for a minute, directly beneath the bulb their is sort of a lower light level but directly below the ends of the reflector is brighter, basically say i had a plant directly under the bulb then the edges of the plant would be brighter than directly below the bulb, possibly due to the element or something so maybe it is light burn, i wonder if i fit the bulb or turn is half a turn before screwing it in if i would lose that less light below the bulb, say if i got the element in the bulb at the top instead of at the bottom as i think its that thats causing the less light directly below the bulb like say i put my arm under the light then the light seems brighter either side of the bulb then it does on the part of my arm directly below the bulb so possibly is light burn thinking about it now, ill give it all a good check tomorrow.

ill check the light level and check the mylar for any signs of hot spots,
thanks mate
