Welcome aboard my friend! :thanks:

Bubba's looking fantastic!

Thank you SO! Very excited to smoke/vape this one. :thumb::green_heart:

Very kind words, nivek! Thank you and nice to have you here. :Namaste:

Thanks for the shout...sorry I'm late! I give my autos 130,000 lux from the day they break ground. Does that help?

That's amazing! I don't think my lights have that 130k capacity, but, regardless, my main takeaway is that seedlings can handle a lot more light than generally prescribed ("up to 15k" according to lots of sources).

This is also consistent with that legendary Bruce Bugbee lecture where he talks about clones and seedlings being able to handle way more light than many people seem to think (given the right balance with other variables).

Thank you both!

I don't know whose can. I grow in the sun so don't use me as a guide! :cheesygrinsmiley:

I post this a lot:

Looool I did do a double-take on your figure but decided to take it at face value :laughtwo:

Yeah, by those guidelines my plants would all be fried at seedling stage (apparently 5-7k). It doesn't help that everyone equivocates over the distinction between "seedling" and "veg" stages.

More context: with photoperiods this is moot, as I don't mind taking the time to ease plants into greater light intensity.

The issue is with autos, where there is significant pressure for vegetative growth within the first couple of weeks.

I'll just have to keep experimenting!

Grub, Pre '98 Bubba Kush, day 22 of 12-12

It's defol time!

It's a late night for me down here in Aotearoa.

So it was a pretty big defol. The pressure was on to create as much airflow and light penetration as possible, given the spatial constraints. I tried to leave as many bottommost fan leaves as possible. I didn't like having to cull so many fans, but that is my reality in this tiny space!

I also did some lollipopping, although I do expect to see a bit of larf still. I just want to see what these tiny QBs can do.

The canopy is more uneven than I'd like, but I think partly that unevenness is amplified by the scale.

The internode spacing is decent, and probably could have been even better if I'd gotten on top of the lighting situation sooner.

First grow in this box, so I have to be patient with myself! It's still a reconnaissance mission, and there are still lots of tweaks to be made for the next run.

The plant seems very happy and for that I am thankful.

:high-five: :green_heart::Namaste:
Boom brother... nice tidying up. She's gonna be a really nice girl!

Awesome journal sy! Lots of fun and loads of good information. I particularly liked your thoughts on the Cookie/OG invasion.

I like what you are doing with the small space. I'll probably have to go down that route as the kids grow older as I won't be able to hide an entire room of weed anymore lol. Have you ever looked into (not literally) Space Buckets?

I'm here for the ride now :passitleft:

Thanks BC!! Nice to have you back after your little hiatus! :green_heart:

Aaaayyy it's the Professor! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Glad you liked my broad reflections on our genetic situation! I have had a few more thoughts regarding the "holy trinity" (Chem, OGK, Sour D) that I will put into a post here soon.

Oh yeah. Regarding the small/micro spaces, QBs really make some impossible-seeming things possible.

I did look into space buckets at the beginning, but I should really do again, also especially after some good prompting by @bluter on more 360 lighting. There are still many improvements that can be made to these little boxes.

:thanks:

Wish, HSC Blue Dream Auto, day 43

Social obligations really are piling up. I'm proud to have worked my way out of some this evening, so I can have the house to myself for a bit. :high-five:

Anyway, it's really, really hard to photograph this one well, i.e. to produce a photo from which one can make sense of Wish's structure! :laugh:

Wish is quite a bit more yellow than I'd like it to be. It's possible that I made the switch from veg to flower nutes too early - another transition/timing in autos that I need to get my head around! Or it's possible that Wish needs a higher PPM of base nutes than Grub does (who's a nice deep green through and through).

Thanks for stopping by! :high-five::surf:

Social obligations? Sounds vaguely familiar but can't quite place it.
Again...what?

How quickly the mundane turns alien, eh? :green_heart:

Looking neat and tidy, tidy and neat!

Thank you Shed! :high-five::Namaste:

Is there very little nitrogen in the flower nutes? Some nute lines are still run as if nitrogen use doesn't go up in flower.

It's Canna so I have to assume it's user error right now. Perhaps there's another variable I haven't considered. The other flowering girl is on the same schedule and looking pristine. :hmmmm:

It’s looking fantastic Sy. That Bubba is looking perfect.

Also - Autos keep growing. They can continue to grow long past any kind of flowering stretch so I will often read people and noting that the switch to flowering and it’s not such a big deal I’m actually giving a combination.

probably wouldn’t hurt to add some nitrogen to your mix.

happy Saturday morning :passitleft:

Hi, Sye!
She's looking great, except for that yellowness....
Could she be rootbound?...If adding a little N doesn't help, that may be something to consider-
that's a pretty small pot she's in...and she's been in there for quite awhile...

Thank you for that! Yes, I actually did notice that while the topmost branches haven't grown for days, some of the lowest ones are actually still stretching. Definitely not something I'm accustomed to!

happy Saturday morning :passitleft:

:passitleft:

A capsule, and then I need to do a tidy of my work desk/garden surroundings. It's a mound of packaging material and other detritus right now.

Lovely day out though. I'm always grateful when the dehumidifier doesn't have to be on!

Thank you Carcass! Yes, rootbound-edness (ugh is there no good noun?) is definitely possible. The container is tiny. However, it seems to water through just fine and the plant takes about 3 days to get through a feed. I'll try upping the N and then re-assess. :Namaste::thanks:

In Search of Fuel: The Holy Trinity of Modern Cannabis?

Hey folks! After my last set of broad reflections on the state of the gene pool, I thought I'd go back upstream to examine the "holy trinity": Chem, Sour Diesel and OG Kush.

Chem and Chem '91

This is an excellent interview with Skunk VA, who held the Chem '91 cut for ages, and actually "returned it" to Chemdog after Chemdog himself had lost his cut. How Skunk VA got the cut is an incredible story in and of itself - a chance meeting, a lifelong friendship, and hanging out with the Grateful Dead.

Amazingly, I discovered that Skunk VA has his own company and seed line, Lucky Dog Seed Co., and has produced a bunch of incredible Chem crosses. There's also Nspecta/CSI Humboldt's Chem '91 S1. Cali Connection also claims to have a Chem '91 Skunk VA cut in seed form, but it's harder to verify this one, and it's received no endorsement from any of the Chem fam.

The actual story of the Chem seeds involves a Grateful Dead concert and some bag seeds of something called "Dog bud". Here's an episode of the Adam Dunn Show featuring Chemdog and Pbud where they talk about it. Check it out if you can handle Adam Dunn's constant interruptions and occasional short-circuiting.

I believe in that talk they touch on Sour Diesel as possibly being the result of Chem '91 getting pollinated (accidentally, of course) by a Mass/Super Skunk (or vice versa).

Sour Diesel

Maybe my other favourite talk (besides the Skunk VA interview), this one features James Loud, Mojave Richmond and Sour Silicate.

Notable points in this talk:

- In James Loud's opinion, no one has managed to stabilise Sour Diesel in seed form yet, closest being Karma Genetics' Sour Diesel BXs ("close but not quite it")
- Origins of and confusions surrounding the "Headband", which also involves the OG Kush, and an exchange between the West Coast OG (Josh D et al) crew and the East Coast SD crew
- Sour Silicate thought that the SD was from some Chem bag seeds (contrast with theory that it's Chem '91 x Super Skunk)
- A container of Chem seeds that had "our Chem" written on it, before it was amended with an "s" to say "Sour Chem"
- It was one seed from that container that spawned the Sour Diesel, and all cuts were from the same plant

OG Kush

I was remarking to @DonkeyDick how strange it is that the OG Kush is everywhere and yet nowhere, at once. There's like a 99% chance (figuratively) that there's OG Kush in whatever you're smoking now. Wanna find the "real" OG Kush in seed form though? Good luck. Adam Dunn has a 3-part series starting here:

The people who are most often credited with its discovery and distribution are Josh D and Matt "Bubba" Berger. A cut retrieved from Florida and then brought back to California (LA?). It was also that same grow room where the OG Kush was pollinated by Matt's "Bubba" (apparently an NL#5), or the other way around, which gave us Bubba Kush!

As for its breeding origins, in the Sour Diesel conversation, Mojave claims that he spoke to Origins TK, and that a Hindu Kush pollinated his Emerald Triangle cut, which was what produced the OG.

Known OG cuts: Ghost OG, SFV OG, Tahoe OG

All connected?

Loose notes about the connections between all three:

- Fuel/gas in modern varieties seem largely to stem from the trinity
- Terpene composition of "fuel" as particular balance of myrcene, limonene and pinene?
- Is the OG connected to the Chem family? Or do they share a more remote ancestor?
- According to Phylos, all three are situated very close to each other, genetically
- Dog bud, Emerald Triangle, Hindu Kush as possible precursors

Finding seeds?

Seems like between Skunk VA's Lucky Dog Seed Co. and Nspecta's CSI Humboldt, you can find a solid Chem '91. For now, the Sour Diesel is probably best sought out in a strong outcross. Or if you can get your hands on one of Karma Genetics' backcrosses. I'm still looking into the OG - I think there are good versions out there but it'll take a bit more searching to figure out which are worth gambling on. Karma's Biker Kush is widely cited, but seems mostly sold out!

:thanks: :ganjamon::high-five::surf:

Origins of and confusions
Great job you’ve done finding the headwaters of some of these streams of thought. Well done. :adore: It has seemed a bit like trying to catch smoke in a net, but you’ve chased down some ghosts here. Some of the stories people had made up as legend passed into myth - some of them were pretty entertaining too.
Good on you pinning these butterflies to the page.
:love::peace:
Guess I should dust off a few of those old Grateful Dead bootlegs now soon.
