DWC & Soil: Verb's Purple Puncher Autos, Mars Hydro TS 1000

11/10 Update

Blackberry Kush / 11/10 / Day 53

Calcium def still remains. Ive fed last couple days only 6.5pH water mixed with ~200ppm of Cal/Mag and seaweed extract.
She drinks properly but might be due the closest tops are like 15-20cm below TS 1000 which is dimmed at 65%.

Getting denser day by day

Purple Punch auto#1 / 11/10 / Day 8
Shes progressing nicely. More noticable growth can be seen in every 24hrs.
Can’t wait to start playing the LST Clips - trying to keep her under 30cm height.

Gave her first feed yesterday (~0.25L):
- 3ml/l GHE Root booster
- 0.33ml/l GHE Micro ~25ppm N & 5ppm K
- 0.75ml/l Terpinator ~40ppm K

Purple Punch auto#2 / 11/10 / Day 2
Looks a bit smaller seedling than normally. Idk if its stunted or just growing the roots now. Nothing thru the slab yet tho..
Haven’t mist the cube in past two days, so today gave couple sprays. Proper RW cube which fibers are in good condition, it holds amazing amounts of water.

Here it is on day two

Journal update 11/12

Nice friday folks!
New DWC project is starting painfully slowly. It is PP#2’s 3rd or 4th day and no roots through the RW slab yet to be seen. Which feels odd.. Last seedlings usually pushed the tap root thru after ~2 days.
Overall growth has been a bit slower than her sister’s in soil.. But I guess couple more days for settling down and and when set of real leaves open.
Oh and, night temps has dropped down to 18-19C couple of nights so wondering if that cold weather can stunt the seedling

Purple Punch#2 / 11/12 / Let’s call this day 4

Purple Punch#1 / 11/12 / Day 10
Shes progressing nicely :) Looks loving the 85W CFL. Serrted leaves are like 4.5cm (~2") width.
Noticeable growth can bee seen every 24hrs.
Can’t wait to start playing with the LST clips.

Blackberry Kush auto / 11/12 / Day 55
Shes getting denser day by day :cheer:
Tried to flush the soil again because thought there excess Phosphorus blocking Ca uptake. Now we’ll wait couple days and see!
Soil runoff pH were 6.1 so Bio Litemix buffers the pH pretty well, I guess. Ive fed multiple times +1000ppm feed without/or like 5-10% runoff. EC were 1.6 - a bit higher than expected since lite mix is buffered at 1.3 EC. Not too worried since we’re still inside the scale and those runoffs aren’t 100% accurate. Should take a soil sample to get more accurate read.

And couple photos. I frikin love the colors

Hey @Rexer nice to have you back around! :ciao:

What you think is the seedling having some root problems or being stunted - It is 5th day since it opened cots and no roots thru the 4x4cm RW slab? Overall growth seems slower than her sisters so first assumed it is just growing hella roots, but feels like roots idling even more.
Carefully pruned off about 0.5cm (~0.2") from the bottom and little from the sides of the RW to see if the tap root would show up. And thought less Rockwool materia placed in netcup would be better.

RW slab should be buffered properly this time (soaked it in 5.8 or 6pH water couple hrs) and shaked the excess water off - didn’t squeeze or push it at all so the cube retained its structure.
Also having ”a sample slab” right next to other so it is easier to tell when it gets dry and/or if its too wet.

Oh and hello @Cola Monster glad you found here!

The remaining strains are Blackberry Kush auto and two Purple Punch autos.
Both having Limonene as a primary terpene and both strains should result in sweet citrust aroma and deep purplish colors.

Also @Terpinator will be used from the very beginning until harvest, to see if it increases terpnes.

Hey Verbalist,

For the rockwool seedling, what kind of container is it sitting in?

Hey Verbalist,

Hey Rex!
It was sitting in a wash ball, since didn’t have a RW holder :D

End of the 6th day first roots poked thru the slab
429ADF14-D0C2-489B-B3FF-33B075E3588F.jpeg

Pruned RW little more before transplanted into DWC so I could bury it high as possible.
Might just take a lil longer to get the first roots thru the netcup. at least now don’t have to worry about damping off or too wet slab.

Now wondering how firmly that slab sits in in the hydroton when its placed that high. Hopefully main stalk anchors itself good enough so I can start LST:ing between 2nd - 3rd week.

I asked as I wasn't sure if it was sitting in a lightproof container. The roots won't pop out if they're exposed to light.
She should take off now. Just be careful not to squeeze the Rockwool, it's filled with tiny air pockets that compress when squeezed, and that can make it more difficult to pop through.
Top feed about an inch around it (let the hydroton beside it get wet), the roots will go do their thing and search for water.

Journal update 11/15

Hóla amigos!
Fresh start of the fucking cold ass week of november. -4C deg outside and last night it was snowing for first time this year.
My exhaust fan is connected directly to the rooms air duct (which regulates the incoming air) but I deflected it with the fan and str8 tubing from tent to it. The fan blows about ~250m2/h BUT still somehow theres coming cold and dry air inside. Temps has dropped minus 2-3C and during the night it almost drops to 16-17C…:sorry:

Dunno if I should buy more powerful exhaust fan, or then replan the whole tent deaeration. Would have to buy carbon filters and shit then. I’ve loved the current system because out take goes straight outside so haven’t really had to worry about the smell.

Anywaydos, le señoritas:

~250ppm worth of Cal/Mag, 200ppm from terpinator then rest from base nutes (micro&bloom) and beneficials/bloom boosteers.
Might start ripenin on just starting 8th week. Also as this droughting thing has become more popular this time going to give it a shot for couple times at the very end like 5-7 days dryness depending how well she survives.

So transplanted the seedling on 6" netcup and fired the DWC up!
First res contains:
- 0.25ml/l Bio Cal/Mag
- 0.2ml/l Micro
- 0.2ml/l Bloom
- 0.5ml/l Hydroguard
- 0.4ml/l Terpinator
~1.2ml pH down (5% phosphoric acid)
Starting TDS were 265ppm.

So the waiting game is on…
Her sister started taking grow spurts after 10 days. This one seems a bit slower, but when the roots hit the water then we go :)

Hey Rex and thanks for the reply :)
Was actually doing the same as I did last time bout 7 weeks ago, when germinated in RW.
Kept the plastic wrap around it first couple of days but removed it becaue felt like it holds moisture too well/slab wont breath enough. So placed it into washing ball which covers the bottom at least from the light.
I was probs just over caring once again:Rasta:

Oh and other thingy. What u reckon would that improve growth if I’d buy these:

1637062948257.jpeg

And tubing for it. OR T-Valve and divide it and insert tubing inside hydroton.

Would just recirculate the same water from my res. Instead of buying/setting up a whole new irrigation system with a separate reservoir. Thoughts?

Anytime Verbalist!
You could add the top ring for when it's in seedling stage. But with the DWC, once the roots hit the res, you would turn it off and let the plant feed directly the res. So, really it up to you if you think the investment is worth it.

Ahh yes, alway remove the plastic wrap ...and the sides / bottom should be in a light proof container.

She'll love the TS1000. :ganjamon:
No doubt! Blackberry Kush still being at the parade spot right under the lamp.
Hopefully youngsters do fine for the next 5 days, before tuning TS1000 for them.

In any case Mars Hydro TS 1000 has met my expections for everything! It is perfect for 2x3 tent.
Haven’t dimmed the lamp much above 80% and ~120W output is more than enough for one single plant which is sitting roughly 8" (highest colas) below the lamp.

Actually thought you’d advice something like that :)
Instead of buying a water pumps slash rings, I decided to upgrade the air pump + stones :surf:

Fell in love with this ”air bar”. It is an elastic plastic so you can shape and style it for own needs.
New air pump has two outputs and blows two times more (480L/h @ max) than my last one.

And thats a draft how I placed the stones inside res. SO MANY bubbles now brother
I’ll make a proper post later today..

Journal update 11/17

Hello!
Things moving forward. Theres like every stage of cannabis life cycles on hands right now
:ganjamon:

Bought some new gear among other things new two out put air pump (blows 480l/h at max) which is almost 2x more than the old one! Reservoir is 15L (~4gallon) and two air stones makes hella bubbles now. Praise the oxygen! Theres never too much o2 in water.

Also found this ”air bar” to be a nice addition. It is from elastic plastic so it can be shaped how ever you want.
Made this as a draft how I lay them on bottom of res:

Bubbles!

Hailea adjustable 480L/h air pump & golf ball might be tested later as well.
C9086F1F-D5D3-4471-BE21-9F50EB5F9947.jpeg

Then the youngsters.
@Rexer @FelipeBlu @West Hippie what you reckon is it just pheno related and might need time to settle or should I be worried about the abnormal growth?
These don’t know anything about symmetry :D PP#1 barely grew two other fingers on the first three fingered leave. And PP#2 looks doing the same. Theres the first set of true leaves (3 fingers) just formin, but by looking them Im pretty sure it is going to look like her sister between day 9-13.

96E5B967-3056-4D1F-B764-FDC71407BBE9.jpeg

And it can’t be related on growing medium, environments or lighting because these two have had different conditions and growing them separately right now. PP#2 bucket is sitting inside the closet where I can have a better control of RH and VPD.
Im moving PP#2 bucket into tent when tuning the TS 1000 for them.

I’m a bit heavy feeder, but carefully calculated NPK and micros so everything should be in scale and right ratio of N&K and Ca&Mg. (Increased Ca up to 90-100ppm - Potassium goes a bit higher than Ca and N is low as 40-50ppm)

Little adjustments were done since first roots came through the net cup!
Topped up the res so water levels 0.5" below the net cup and reservoir provides now:
N: ~30ppm
P: 8ppm
K: 53ppm
Ca: 50ppm + tap water
Mg: 15ppm + tap water
And recommended amount of trace elements.
Watching how she reacts and gotta change the res anyway in couple of days when moving it under TS 1000 - so the need of Calcium increases.

Now when the roots got into the water expecting to see some spurts on 2nd week.

I’ll post later tonight BBK update when I get the photos. Shes swelling nicely, and bout to start droughting from today.
11/17 irrigated ~2L and aiming for at least 5 days dryness - Im happy if I can make it to 7 days.
Sorry @Rexer for shooting you with the HL’s but I noticed you had a some kind of app or something to measure leaf angles(?) If so would you mind sharing it? Otherwise gotta do it ole skool and use protractor

Thanks for stoppin by and catch up later!

Hey Verbalist!

To figure out the LWA,

First you need to setup your photo spot. It needs to be consistent, that is key. Same exact spot, same angle that the picture is taken from. For myself, I used a pencil mark on my scrog Frame to ensure the phone was placed exactly the same for each photo.

Take your photo.

Download an app called Image Meter. Open the picture you took (use the app to open the picture).
Zoom until your happy with picture.

Click in the app the little angle icon.

Drag you three points to get your angle. Use those exact same three points on the plant each time for measuring to keep consistent.

If you don't want to pay for the app, take a screenshot to save a copy.
