Here's my first 2 mothers in 3" pots. I'll only let them get a couple inches taller than they are now then I'll trim them back again. In theory I can get 12 in a 1ft x 1ft space.

So far I've not had any problems keeping them this small. I'm still experimenting though

Sweet! That might be the way I can get going with a few more. I'll have a permanent 1x3 space for them, I guess in a 6" pot I could squeeze in 12, 8" pot would get me about 8.

If they get too big over time, I can take a clone and start again if I had to.

Indeed. Cloning them over and over is an option but you could also root prune and keep the same mother in theory forever. Some people say you shouldn't keep them for longer than a year whereas others say that they've had mothers for years with no ill effects. My goal with these is to prune the roots every couple of months or so and put them back in the same 3" pots.

Apologies. I misread the "too big" part. Just trim them back if they get too big. I discovered to my horror that there is such a thing as too far though.

As always you got this this one nailed , those are some frosty ladies , gonna be some sweet smoke at your house congratulations !!!
Thanks Noobie! I’m looking forward to it that’s for sure haha!

Your plan has a similar outcome to mine but instead I'm hoping to find 10....or so to keep. I might then continue to grow new strains alongside my keepers and if I find something I like more then I will swap it with one of the mothers I'm bored with. Maybe. My thoughts have been all over the place recently lol. First though I've got 21 plants to whittle down. Cheers Dutch
That’s my plan as well haha! I’ll be running new genetics during the year and if any catch my eye more than a current mother I’ll switch it up!

Pretty much my plan as well, although I'm not sure I'll be able to keep more than 6, and that's only if I can keep them bonsai style and in 6" pots. If not, well, it will only be 3.
I was trying the bonsai technique but with 20+ plants it was becoming a bit much! I’m not just running clones whenever I need to shrink a mom down! I’ll grow them out for a little while then when they are well rooted and getting big take a cutting and restart!

Precisely! If you can maintain the trim back your in good shape!

How much was to much? Lol

The Frost Factory - I've definitely come to the right place!

BTW - Congratulations on your JOTY award!

I'm still pretty new here and trying to get settled in - and I could use some advice please.

I got a 4 x 4 tent recently and I want to grow bigger taller plants this time. My last grow by myself was okay, but the plants and buds were small.

Right now, I'm planning on 6 plants - and I'm hoping to grow them to 4.5 feet (1.35 m) - to maximize tent space; but I'm noticing you have 9 plants fitting nicely into your 4 x 4. How tall do you grow your plants?

I'm putting a lot of time in up front planning right now - and is there anything you can think of to make my grow in the 4 x 4 a success this time?

Thanks in advance!
Hey DrCC! Welcome to 420 and to my journal of course! Thank you for the kind words!
So a few things:
- I don’t grow my plants to a specific height I try to fill my tent from wall to wall. At this point I flip my lights to begin flower. I’m not worried about how tall my plants grow but more so keeping as flat and even of a canopy as possible. This allows you to keep your light at an optimal distance for good penetration as @InTheShed mentioned! A PAR meter would be a good tool to use if you wanted to find out your exact lighting quality at all points in your grow area. This round I have 9x plants but even if I ran 4x I would still run the same way.
-Train flat and outwards until I fill my tent to the walls
-I then Flip my tent to flower and allow stretch to happen naturally
-I do a Defoliation to open Budsites and remove blocking foliage for better light penetration and airflow at certain times throughout the flowering period

Hope that helps a bit but as @InTheShed also mentioned we are all here to help and answer questions! Good luck and if you need anything just ask!

Asking and answering questions is why we're here DrCC! That and bragging. ;)

12" could well be too close to the top of a plant (they recommend 12-18"), and do you have two lights or just the one? Mars calls that light a 3x5 in veg and a 2x4 in flower.

A lux meter might not be a bad idea either if you don't have one yet.

Cool - I've got the asking questions thing under control now - and I got a PM from one of your buddies that you will teach me all about bragging - you really are a great guy! :)

Those look great - and I understand the name Bonsai Mother now.

I see you've got a few "Group Grow" links in your signature - I'd be interested in those since it's a great way to learn and make friends.

Thank-you very much for taking the time to help me out!

I had it in my mind that the bigger the pot - the bigger the roots - the wider the stalk - the taller the plant - and the bigger the colas.

And just so I understand (and to help me remember):

- we let the plants grow out and up
- top any branches that get too tall - this keeps the canopy even
- flip when the tent is full wall-to-wall
- then they will naturally stretch up
- when stretch is done we defoliate the lower third of the plant
- we do selective defoliation as needed during flower to open bud sites

Thanks again for all the advice!

I'm heading over to @ProfessorFlora 's journals now - hehe - you've been warned :)

Thanks for the invite - I'll head over to the Misty Mountain and see how your 'preciouses' are doing now.

Hay Dutch I have been talking with Justen from Budget LED and I am pretty sure I will be buying one of their 350 watt light to go with my Mars COBs. Your thread is what got me interested in Budget LED. I will probably have to wait till the first of next month to have the funds to get it but I am 99.9% sure I will get that light. Hard to beat Vet owned and based in Michigan so made in the USA and they use top end equipment I am Sold. Thanks for this Journal I would probably not considered them with out it

Hi Dutch! Your grow is looking great as always. Also, congrats on the JotY. :welldone:

Hey Ductchy, do you weave and tuck at all after flip/in stretch to keep uneven stretch from happening or just fill the screen evenly, flip and let them do their thing? Your canopys seem to stay pretty even through and after stretch which I know can be difficult with multiple strains. I kind of remember seeing you supercrop at some point...?

That’s pretty much the basic run down! I don’t too my lead branches though I try to bend and manipulate them to keep it growing! Good luck brother and if you have any other questions just ask along the way!

Hi Dutch! Your grow is looking great as always. Also, congrats on the JotY. :welldone:
Thank you kindly Beez! I appreciate it and I’ll be sure to wear the badge with great pride!

I’m here and caught up.

looking great as always Dutch.

:high-five:
Hey Silver glad you got caught up! Cheers pal!

Hey Deecee! I do a little bit of tucking and bending to manipulate my canopy and supercrop if I have to! It will be easier when I run clone runs to keep it completely even but with the multi strain runs it’s a challenge like you said! Always fun to work in the garden though!

Update

What’s up everyone! Got an action packed update today so let’s get to it!

First I’ll start off with the grow box! The mini mothers and reveg clones from this flowering group are doing great!

The clones I don’t select as my mother I’ll be flowering out in 1 or 2 Gal containers for a quick flip in my 2x2 once the CBD Blue Shark and Maple Cookies are harvested.

The IHG girls were looking better after being transplanted so I decided to give them some training!

This was before:

This was right after:

5 Hours later:

The one branch that I had almost broke off was growing well again so I removed the tape to check out the recovery! Incredible how this was hanging on by a thread and recuperated to growing a strong bark knuckle. Just shows how resilient these plants are!

Then let’s jump over to the 4x4 where we are on Day 50 from flip. I was just curious to check the trichomes on a few of the more mature looking plants and to my surprise I noticed a few sparse ambers already!

This is exciting and tells me that we are getting close to harvest! I’ll be giving them another 2 weeks probably and watch how they bulk up! Lots of bulking and frost to come so some photos of the ladies today seems right!

Then a few more seeds got dropped today as well! 30:1 Dr.Seedsman from @SeedsMan which will be another awesome addition to my wife’s medical arsenal! These little ones will go into PromixHP tomorrow and hopefully see them above ground this week!

Hope your having a fantastic weekend so far and Stay Medicated!
