I still buy and watch DVDs. I havent had the desire to buy a Blueray player. I still buy Music on CD though and keep them around. i am not a huge fan of buying music digitally, it just doesnt feel right to me.
My sister was 20, we were living next to San Francisco Bay, and she decided to go to Lake Tahoe with her boyfriend for a long weekend. His car was a piece of junk that couldn't reliably make the 400 mile round trip with a 7,000 ft climb over Donner Pass. I had 2 cars at the time, a reliable '66 Chevy II Nova straight six with 80,000 miles on the engine (an old lady car) and a boxy little tin can Renault 10 with 400 miles on an engine I rebuilt (a wierd person's car ) I tried to talk her into borrowing the '66 Chevy automatic with it's quiet, smooth ride and bench seats, but she was set on the Renault 10 with it's stick shift and zippy little, pick up the inside front wheel in a hot corner, swing-axle performance.
Because of a design flaw in the rear engine car, where the radiator pushed air out at the back of the 'trunk', I made her SWEAR not to drive between 60 and 75 MPH for more than 10 minutes at a time, explaining that the air flowing at 65 MPH caused a bubble that forced air over the roofline to land on the radiator exhaust grill- stopping all cooling. She swore she would follow that rule and the Renault 10 survived the weekend climb over the Sierra Nevada mountains range.
What my sister had failed to mention, and the family did not find out until 5 months later, was that she was borrowing the car to go to Nevada and get married (funded by her boyfriend selling his piece of junk car.) They decided any good elopement deserved a honeymoon, especially when the groom was trying not to be arrested for petty theft, so they took off for Salt Lake City and lived there a couple of months. Deciding that being a bi-racial couple in Utah was not enough of a challenge, they headed south through various deserts in the heat of summer. Somewhere in Texas, her car illiterate new hubby decided to set the cruise control for 65 MPH and ignore the temperature guage and flashing idiot light until the engine overheated and sent a piston and sleeve through the side of the engine block - at least that is the story my sister told when she returned home 5 months later, 7 months pregnant, married and without my car. (She left out the petty theft, but the fact that he served 6 months in a work release county facility shortly after his return seemed more than a coincidence.)
After their return, my distinctly pregnant sister and her new husband needed a car, so I forgave the Grand Theft Auto incident and sold her the '66 Chevy - which lasted her longer than her 3 year marriage. I went along with it, because she hooked me up with a good deal on an 1.1 liter Lemon Yellow Opel Rallye Kadett outiftted with aftermarket dual side draft SU carburetors that accelerated like a go cart to a top speed of 85 MPH. Even more of a tin can than the Renault, it was 1500 lbs dripping wet with no carpeting or floor mats and plastic coated cardboard door panels without soundproofing. It was a dream to work on, since you could see every part on the car except the inside of the engine and drive train. When I replaced the clutch, I picked the transmission up with one hand and slid it into position - but I digress.
My sister later married the man who sold me the Opel Kadett (still married to him.) Over 60, they still drive cars hard in autocross (parking lot) timed laps - yet I am the black sheep of the family

Awesome story man! While it sounds like it was a shit show I enjoyed your telling of it. Thank you for that. I enjoy the Nova IIs. I would prefer one with a 327 or better in it, but it would be sweet to come across a grocery getter with low miles and in good shape. My sister was 20, we were living next to San Francisco Bay, and she decided to go to Lake Tahoe with her boyfriend for a long weekend.
