DrZiggy's Low And Slow Drying: Maximizing Your Harvest

Back into the dryer. After an hour in the jar, the RH had reached 80%... I will check them in the morning and see where they are...

So at 36 hours I pulled the little buds as I did at 24 hours, jarred them for an hour and a half and the RH was down to 51ish...

So I pulled the large nug and after feeling the stem, thought I would put it in as well... shut down the dehydrator...

After 3 hours this is where it has stabilized and I'm going to start the cure, burping a few times a day for the next couple weeks...
I'm hopeful this is a fantastic way to expedite the dry and cure time without loosing any quality... thanks for all the suggestions and direction Luwee and Sue! Love this community and I'll report back with a smoke report when it happens! Right now I am planning on doing my full harvest in this...if it cures as planned... ..

As you guys indicated Sweetsue and Luwee... the RH went up to about 74 after 14 hours... put the nug back in the dehydrator for an hour and a half... jarred it up and after 6 hours it's sitting at 69-70.... going to give it some more time in the jar and in 4 hours if it is still there try a 45 min cycle in the dehydrator

I recommend leaving the top off of the jar for 30 minutes every day after the rH stabilizes at 65%.

Perfect! I've opened it up twice just for maybe a 30 seconds of wafting... but I'm guessing I'm going to be pretty close to where you guys have been suggesting. Do the 30 mins for a week or two?

I do 30 minutes for about a month until it's good and cured then switch to short burps.

Thirty minutes a day for thirty days?

I lost track of time, and about fifty hours passed before I checked the dehydrator.

Although there was obviously more moisture in the buds, they were dry on the outside, at least dry enough to tell me it was time to jar them up to bring the internal moisture out.

Into jars they went, with the hygrometer in the jar with the smallest cuts and buds.

Three hours later they're registering 80% humidity, and the exteriors are all soft again. Back into the dehydrator they go.

I'll check again in the morning, first thing, and jar them up again. I still don't discern an inordinate amount of smell from the machine while it's running.

I went to bed about 2AM, and before I did so I checked the buds after three hours in the dehydrator, determining them to be dry enough to jar up for the night.

At 2PM this afternoon I remembered they needed to go back in the dehydrator. :laughtwo:

IMG_132048.JPG

After three more hours they were dry enough on the surface to jar up again. This time I cut them from the branches. I'll check in the morning. I know the larger buds need at least one more run, but I think the smaller pieces may be close enough to start the cure.

Harvest was the 31st, so I'm four days in right now. I think it's going very well. Yesterday I decided some of it was dry enough to go ahead and make a pan of brownies for the daughter.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what this is all about. :laughtwo: She's been without her favorite meds for months now. We're back up to speed. :slide:

I have a DDA that's been in the dehydrator for about 30hrs
Think she will be ready to test jar in the AM
I agree, no noticable smell in the house from them either

I decided to give it a try with my Candy Cane in her harvest window. She'll come down on Thursday after being closed up nice and tight in the closet.

SweetSue, were there results of the cedar-lined darkness? Did you notice anything different from usual? I know you harvested them back on 8/28 but we were all wrapped up in the new dehydrator method and I forgot to ask!

She was super frosty going in, so it would have been hard to determine. I did because it made sense to me that it would ramp up the terpenes, but again, super smelly going in, so..... :battingeyelashes:

It's not something I'll do again.

While I'm here, I have a number of harvests that are finally jarred up.

Plus the Ultra Dawg that was dried low and slo. Some of the best-smelling cannabis I've had the privilege to be around. Also, somewhere in the back of he shelf is a small jar of Dark Devil Auto dried low and slo. :laughtwo: I've managed to get significant experience in both methods in a short span of time.

I'm finding the dehydrated buds comparable to the low and slo buds, as far as potency goes. Most are still in the early stages of the cure, so terpene expression is constantly changing, but the low and slo have the upper hand in the fragrance department. The jars get burped periodically. I'm not a stickler for burping every day. I still have bits and pieces of three harvests resting in complete darkness.

I'm liking the quickness of the dehydrator. In the end they might all end up with comparable terpene expressions too, and the value of having the entire harvest jarred up curing in just a matter of days is a great draw.

After I did my first run with the dehydrator I had a pretty good idea what size buds would work best. The second run went much easier. Three spells through the dehydrator and they were done. I could have moved the process along better had I paid more attention to the clock.

Although both methods give similar results, I find myself reaching for the low and slo dried buds first. That may be habit. Most of what I harvested lately were indica-dominant, and I don't mix well with most indicas. When I take down the next Carnival, or my Devil's Carnival I'll get a better determination of the superiority or either method. I feel like I'm assured of a good crop cured and ready to go with one or the other.

I'm feeling really pampered. :blunt:

Dam nice stack of jars u got there i cant wait to get there myself one day lol hey I jus had a question about the lo n slo dry method once u jar the buds do u keep the jar in the fridge or do u take and put them in cupboards at that point??

Hey SuperSue....

I'm on my 2nd round of dehydrator buds.
I'm with u, I like the process for sure, this last batch of DDA and Devil Cream smelled a lot more than the last ones during drying, not sure why

I am curious when they get cured more how they are called low n slo

And Blazinjones, once they come out of the fridge they go into jars on a shelf. We then test RH with the meters and I've added bova packs to mine at first and keep rotating the package from old jars to new jars.
I burp mine, well, when I think of it after the 1st week ish. Once they are Below 70% Rh it gets less consistent on my burping

And even if you decide to stick with the slow cure, you can always use this for curing, when you don't want to wait ? I can't find my dehydrator !! Must have loaned it & forgot who has it !!

Did a chop, got this in the refrig and bag. It has worked well for me before. Got seeds in this time. just a little top here. I am looking forward to my next chop and dry.

I thought the reason we dry them slow for at least a week was to break down the chlorophyll. I know a lot of this is happening during the cure, but I thought that first week was extremely important for the final result. It will be interesting to see your results on this one Sue

That is indeed the reason we hang for a week. You'd think all that green in the low and slo would effect the taste and make it grassy, wouldn't you? Turns out the grassy taste vanishes within a day or so in the jar. At least that's been my experience.

The nugs dried low and slo have delicious flavors, with nuiances we've not noticed in the chemovars with other techniques.

I find it interesting that starting this thread led me to the flash-drying technique, so now I'm splitting my harvests between the fastest and slowest methods. :laughtwo: The dehydrator gives me excellent produce ready to process into edibles and the fridge gives me wonderfully superior buds to smoke.

So far neither method is producing anything I'll be entering into the NOTM contests. :laughtwo:

Hi Sue and everyone else!

You may have a low and slo convert here. I did a small amount from my last harvest low and slo and my GF tried some over the past 2 days and said it is far superior to the regular dry/cure method I've been using in flavor, smell and effect. We are planning on doing most if not all of our next harvest low and slo, depending on how much room is in the fridge. The only thing is that I am bad about pulling jars out of the fridge so she said she will do that.

I don't think I'm ready for the dehydrator method but like the sound of the quickness of it but we're really in no rush since she always has plenty of meds on hand.

Thanks Ziggy and Sue! :high-five:
