Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

All this LED talk is actually a bit over my head! My son could build these lights drunk with a broken arm....but it's not my interest to do so myself.

The main thing I've noticed is that excess light, perfect temps and humidity and C02....all in High Brix soil and the plants can sprint and do things they don't normally do.

Nearly every strain I've tried to grow has come out quite different than the standard organic versions under these conditions....and in every case other than certain hydro/salt loving strains they come out way better!

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that having "too much" light is a good thing, provided the soil is full of super athletes on steroids and we're good coaches and managers.

That's what I'm after Doc! Trying to get where I have too much light.. dimmable so I can turn it up or down depending on the plants. My lights just suck so bad.. time to step it up!

Sorry that should be 250 watts. My 0 key sticks :laughtwo: They are bright as can be. I am seriously considering getting sunglasses just for my grow ever since I installed them. 500 watts worth of boards in each 4x4 section is way brighter than the 600 watt HPS in each section and the 315 cmh in each section. I do not have a journal but I will throw up the light pics again.

The lights look yellow and dull in the pics but in person they are very very bright and come off as white. My plants look more their natural color under these than anything else I have had over them. I can send you links to what I got if you want.

Man that would be so awesome of you! Plus reps when I get home to my Mac! I would greatly appreciate that. Those lights you have there are beautiful man! Are your different color leds All on different dimmers? That's what I'd like to do...

Doc, would you care to share the strains you know have trouble in HB? I think many would like to leave them to the really experienced HB growers out there versus stumble around.

The original OG strains: SFV, Tahoe, Larry OG.....all of them are difficult in HB. They grow GREAT! But the taste and smell isn't the same as when they're soaked in high EC salt water like in a hydro grow.

Basically, anything that thrives in super high PPM hydro does not have efficient roots and will come out different in HB. The new drenches have mitigated this problem to some extent, and the addition of Snake Oil makes it so the OG's taste and smell like OG's......but a bit sweeter and not quite as strong on the nose.

But it's my experience that lots of "old" strains take on new life and meaning in HB.

I am just running the one color. I run 3000k which is what Shiggs recommended I run. Each light has its own dimmer. If you ran all spectrums with one driver you would be able to only use one dimmer I believe. Buck has a way more in depth knowledge of dimming and controlling the boards to get what you want.

Ah ok, yea I was reading a bit this morning before work in Shiggs journal that was linked... and he was saying he was gonna have each spectrum on its own dimmer so he could play with it and find what the plants really like. As well as some other way advanced stuff... like the reds and blues having different intensities and different time of the day. I don't think I'm ready to go that far yet... but would be willing
To buy a driver for each spectrum so as to be able to have more control over the lights... but with a list of your build, and knowing I can get drivers with dimmers... I feel confident I can build one that works the way I want.
With that being said... how do you like the 3000k spectrum? That's close to an HPS right? Does it seem the ladies get what they need? Just trying to figure out how crazy I need to go with the different spectrums... or if they are actually all that necessary for growing great produce. Cause let's face it right... Doc grows amazing plants and uses mostly those Gavitas... I think that's right anyway. And aren't those pretty much double ended HPS?

His gavitas are double ended HPS and are supposed to rock it. I have only run the lights for a couple of weeks. I will say that the girls seem to be loving it. My Pineapple Fields has put a lot of bulk on since it has been under it. It was time for it to swell and bulk so it could be just that. i will say that the buds seem denser and less airy as last round under just the CMHs. I am getting more usable light reaching further down the plants and I seriously cannot even look toward the top of the tent without getting a headache. The light intensity is unreal!

Nice! Sounds like just what I need! I bought some of those LED glasses a while back. Once I noticed that if I spend even a minute or so looking inside my tent... then close it up, walk out... everything has a weird green tint to it... I was like screw that! That can’t be good for my eyes! I wear glasses at home so I got the ones that would accommodate thats. They are great! I put in a hat and those glasses and can work in there no problem! I’d suggest you get you some... I remember someone saying they swear the leds made their night vision way worse, and after seeing how my eyes reacted I can see that happening. Not saying it’s true, but better safe than sorry. Thank you for all your help and advice!

You're very welcome man! I hope you can make use of the info I have given. I will look into them. I have never felt I needed eye protection in the grow room until I put these in.

Ace's Panama is a fantastic strain! Several of us have run it and it's definitely a winner.

There are two distinct phenos - a red and a green - and 10% of seeds will show purple. The strain itself is vigorous and easy to grow - not tall and gangly.

I don't know anyone who has run Violeta though.

Run Panama fer shure - do it. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Hey there GT, thanks for the info! Thats good to know cause I remember some talking about the Panama and saying the Red was awesome. So I kept looking and looking with no success. Now I know that is the one you guys were talking about, i'll be running that one for sure. On the Violeta... I may pass on the fem'd seeds cause if I spend a certain amount I get 5 free standard Violeta seeds. With that said, any other have to grow strains from Ace seeds? Figure I'll get something else so I then have 3 new strains to play with.

I enjoyed some High Brix Panama grown from a couple members here.....fantastic! Great nose, smooth, happy effect. Superb!

Heheh, I think between the Brixers, we've run more than half of the Ace catalog! DrZiggy ran a bunch of strains, and Neiko too. I did Panama, Tikal, and Destroyer, all winners. You should try Destroyer - a sticky blueberry/cherry full-on facemelt sativa - won me POTY in 2014. :cheesygrinsmiley:

:bongrip:

... as a matter of fact, I'm puffing on some freshly harvested Zamaldelica cross that Ziggs made - it's superb! I think it's a Golden Tiger cross - got that light fruity Thai nose to it. Yummy!

Destroyer it is then! Ive grown so few strains I just have no idea what I will and won't like... pretty sure I'll like em all in one way or another! Thank you for your help, ima go place my order now! Thought I'd ask around here.. cause you guys know what grows well in this HB soil and have smoked it as well... you guys have a better idea what to grow than I. And after I grow these out, I'll probably have a better idea of what I should be looking for, for my own personal favorite. I appreciate your advice as always GT!!:thanks:

Looking around at some beans... Whats the overall opinion on Ace feminized Panama and Violeta feminized? Both look seem like nice choices for me. One is sativa dominant the other Indica dominant... Looking for some variety. Heard good things about panama red but can't find any of that.

I ran the Violetta and wasn't really please. I only ran the one seed and it tuned out to be the Malawi leaner. It was green, not purple like it was supposed to be and worst of all it took forever to flower. The smoke was ok but could have been a lot better. I would have been less disappointed had they not advertised a very potent, purple strain that takes 9 weeks to finish flower. I ended up with a plant with medium potency, green buds and a 16+ week flower time. The plant blew up in flower and almost over grew my tent. It ended up being a fluffy sativa as GT would call it. If that was what I was looking for it would have been great. If you run it I hope you find a pheno that suits your wants and needs!

The best indicas I've done from ACE is Bubba Hash and Snow Moon. The Snow Moon went purple for me. The bubba is one of my favorite strains period. They have a lot of new strains using the Kali China too. I ran a reg. Kali and it was nice but it slowed me way down. There is a time and place for that but not so much in my life. My wife loved the Kali (anxiety issues) and I will probably run it again someday. Panama and Malawi are my 2 favorite sativas. The Panama Haze is great but be prepared for a monster plant that could go 20 weeks. The regular Panama is very doable in a tent, yields great and can have extremely high cannabinoid and terpene profiles. Tikal is another one I liked but there seems to be a lot of variety in that strain. Some heavier than others but again that can be a really long flowering strain. I would like to try their new fem release of Tikal. That would probably be close to their description of it.

Their Bubba Hash and Snow Moon both sounds like amazing strains. When I was giving my run down of the Violetta I should have said I took it at 16 weeks of 12s but it could have easily gone another month had it been healthier. I had plants in veg that were suffering from being in 1s too long and I had to take it when I did. I really did not plan for it to run that long :laughtwo:
