Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Smoke report:

Skywalker OG

I harvested the first "tester" plant....well, actually SLOtown did when I was gone....the buds came out nice and dense with a lovely lemon/OG smell and a delightful taste. They are very strong. VERY strong.

I now have 3 more in bloom and will be giving them special treatment with OG drench, WA, Bloodmeal and Epsoms, in addition to all the other drenches, foliars, etc.

The tester plant went a bit flat in midbloom. I was told, "This plant craves potassium, magnesium and heavy nitrogen in bloom." After the first round, I fully agree! So, the next round will be much better.

But what I have in the jar is actually amazing! Smooth as silk, lemony/diesel aroma and a very strong, comfortable effect. It's a keeper! I'm very excited to grow more of this.
-----------------------------

Tangerine:

Also harvested when I was away. This plant had a slightly low yield of 2.2 oz. The nugs are small, but dense and well formed. Flavor is a delicate tangerine/mango. It's kinda the "flavored steam" that I used to get a couple years ago, so I believe I can improve on it the second time. It makes fantastic joints, and the effect is pure silk, upbeat, centered, active, and elevating.

Will it replace Colombian? Hmmmm....probably not, but I'll give it at least one more round and tweak a couple things.

Today we start another harvest cycle, beginning with some Paki, and then Ape. Should be colorful and red eyes all around.
Oh boy, can't wait! See you soon.

So I'm still chasing my tail with these Sour Tangies. While MK and BD stay dark green and glossy (the MK goes purple later), the Tangie starts to get stripey yellow around mid-stretch (10 days after flip). It needs to go longer than the other 2 by about 10 days or 2 weeks, but the canopy gets so hammered, I start to get yellow spots on the small leaves of the colas, and then u get that yucky leaf in your bud eventually. Higher in the canopy is worse, lower is still dark and glossy (my lights are not too close). I used BloodMeal for the first time this round, but not until around day 20, well after that week 2 fade already began. Could simply using BMeal at xplant solve my issue next time? should I add more now? (about 2 weeks after first application?)

My gut says this plant needs more nutrient as it is a true hybrid stupid strain, compared to the classic genetics of the MK and BD, but it looks burnt....Ill try to get pictures up...

It turns out pretty good, but I have a bunch of them in veg, its gonna be my last try with them for awhile, but I'd really like to improve. The roots in general in this round are raging, I dont think its a lack of them either.

I think its a combo of mag and nitro deficiency that we can attack with epsom and bloodmeal but earlier eh?

This isnt the greatest picture of it but I didnt take one in the last 3 days or so. You can't see the small leaves in the bud that are going yellow/burnt but u can see the damage to the mid and upper level big leaves.

Also, any DBHB'ers run any Sour Diesel genetics? Thats what this Tangie is crossed with.

fwiw just got its second CD. (pic is just prior to first cd)

The Skywalker is kind of like that and after last round I made the following changes that are working perfectly so far.....they could help you with Sour Tangie.

Bloodmeal at time of transplant. Again post Cat Drench. Epsoms.

Heavy on the drenches, especially Growth Energy and OG Drench.

WayAhead added to Brix every time.....don't let 'em get wet feet! Water carefully, no standing water in the saucer for more than 20 minute.

Evenin Doc, BK, gang...BK, is that MK Ultra you are doin? If so we must chat, i know her well. These days i'm afraid more and more of us are needing blood meal and other supplements for the kit. I like using it with little else involved. The WayAheadX10 i love and will keep using it, the OG Drench is good for the Frankenstrains in our midst and Epsoms are sometimes needed for those salt lovin, Mg., eaters.
Doc , i wanna say how pleased i am with this adjusted 3rd. run soil as compared to not. Huge difference already..very noticeable...absolutly NO fade yet..they are doing great ...so far. So for some out there. This 3rd. DBHBB soil i'm using right now, was cut with one big bag of straight Pro Mix just before use, the biggest bag available, can't recall the amount (Rats!)...after cooking. It has restored some much needed balance in the soil and i'm very happy!
This is a good time to once again thank you Doc...just for having the compassion to continue doing what we all love...and what your damn good at! cheers to ya sir.....and gang!:circle-of-love:

sent from my DeLorean...in the future!:yahoo:

afaik its just MK, its a popular cloned strain around here, its short, leafy, finishes fast, low yielding -ish, smells like waffles...its probably bagseed lol

i'm ditching all the strains I've been with, going to chase White Widow, WIFI OG and Grape Ape next.

I finally got home after touring Cali for almost 3 weeks, and I need to say that visiting Doc's and SloTown's operation was a real high point. It was a great example of family-run grow, where quality is always much more important than quantity with few carefully selected strains that produce vibrant and memorable flavors, and a lot of resin.

No rows of hydro buckets or people in masks and plastic uniforms as it happens in commercial grows, which is pretty funny for me, but plants couldn't be stronger

Doc gave us (me, my wife, and my two friends) a quick tour of veg, flowering, and drying room in a snap, and as we were in fact in a hurry, we got out in no time with THE BUDS on our hands, that left long-lasting impression.

Both Grape Ape and Lemon Paki were as smooth and juicy as it gets with powerful punch and great high, and if all of you get similar produce working with the kit, then you are a bunch of happy folks

I heard I wasn't a first member to see Doc at work... and probably I won't be the last one either :surf: :thanks:

Doc I am a new member but been reading your journals for awhile now. You have helped so many people and we need more like you up here. Since I am new i cant pm you yet but would love if you can pm me so I can get one of your kits. Everything I have read about hi Bruce has me so intrigued so easy but yet te final product is priceless. Again thanks and loved your journal on the gavita de. After I do hi brix i would love to get the 750 de due to my ceiling height. Do you think the 750 de will be fine I have eight foot ceilings? Hope to hear from you soon but until then take a joint take a rip take a puff for me. Again please pm me so I can get a doc bud kit I don't want to try anything else!!

I'm gonna steal this... It's gonna be my word for the week. Brings back a memory. Thanks for the early morning chuckle pino!

Good decision! Stick around and journal your grow so we can help you out along the way :)

You're a lucky man! And yes, we all get the same produce Conradino...in that way we're lucky as well.
Hope you enjoyed our great, albeit dysfunctional, country bro :)

I did. And when you take a good look at it there are great things with funny things, and disturbing things mixed freely in your social life... but it's not really different from any European country in that regard.

They may also be thrips. Get a blue thrip attracting sticky trap and a yellow fungus gnat attracting trap. Keeping them in the garden will help you see things before they become a real issue. Get the dunks for gnats and spinosad concentrate from bonide for the thrips (and any aphids, mites, etc). And some neem or azamax to alternate with the spinosad so they don't become resistant.

I'm starting to get worried.

I bought mosquito dunks, and I am currently brewing a "tea" I can drench the soil with. Was going to wait until next Cat Drench (3-4 days) to water in the tea. Bad idea?

I pulled the sticky tape out of the cabinet and into the sun with my loupe to get a real good look at the critters. They all look like Fungus Gnats. What worries me, is winged root aphids can look just like the fungus gnat. Is there another way to tell them apart?

So, I cut some chunks of potato and placed on top of the soil. I read that the fungus gnat larva will be attracted, and you can lift the potato and see them. After a few hours, I saw nothing. Has anyone done this? How long to see larva?

I think my clones in veg are already suffering from root damage. In the last week, I've noticed leaves that show a deficiency, but I'm sure that's not the problem. Leaves look weak, and the very tips are curling down. The clones will need water in a day or two. Should I treat now, or wait for soil to dry out?

Sorry for the second bad picture, should still be able to see the leaf tips curling down though.

Keep 'em healthy. the mosquito dunks will work. i don't think you have anything to worry about.

I will finally be spending some time reading this thread and some of your other threads soon. This much information was a little intimidating as a rookie but now I am excited to dive in and get past the basics. You think a lot like I do when it comes to theories and "educated experiments" so it will make this a lot of fun to read and absorb. I will say thanks though for some of the gems I have picked up here from you helping on other people's threads. I will be applying your bud washing technique to my first harvest this week. Glad I can say that I will never have a grow where the bud isn't properly washed!

@masonman-

Root aphids have a rounder butt, while fungus gnats have a pointy butt.
I tried Bt (mosquito dunks) but they did nothing to slow down root aphids. The most effective thing I found was a drench with Azatrol (neem). IDK what it might do to the soil biota in a HB grow.

Your leaves have a pretty classic 'K' deficiency look to them, but adding 'K' is evil with the kit.

Yeah, I've been studying pics on google of the two. I' pretty sure it's just gnats. I was just wondering if there was another way to tell them apart other than looking at the body.

I did read that when aphids fly, they fly with purpose, and gnats just fly around willy-nilly. I will check at lights on tonight.

As far as the vegging clones, the only thing I can think is larva eating at the roots. Temps/RH are spot on. Same first run soil I've always used. Both plants look exactly the same.

Will try the mosquito dunk first. Hope for the best...

I'll keep you all updated here.

Good day Mason , Major Doc and Gang......Mason, maybe i can help. Just before i started with the Doc's gear i had a grow that was infested with Root Aphids. I'm no expert but if you think it's them , here's how to be sure. first off i never found much of anything flying around, their was just nothing flying, but my plants were very sick, so one day i got down really close to the soil , looking very closely for signs of movement , something , ..and then i moved it around a bit and still looked very , cvery closely at the same spots...and their it was , i seen it,..the lil bastards were so small , the naked eye would never spot them from more than 6" away. very very small! They moved quickly and tried to hide again. I took a pinch of soil...from just under the surface , looked at it under a scope and there were dozens of them. The plants barely finished , and were very sick looking when i pulled them . Ya , i said pulled them . The worst of them was so badly eaten , i pulled it out with almost no effort or roots attached. It was a sad sight. I battled them for weeks and never got rid of them .The soil was put outside in Feb. to freeze the lil bastards to death. I then gave it to my neighbor for his Tomatoes the next Spring. So, Mason, get down really close and have a look see....see if you can see any movement when you brush the top layer of soil away. Ya gotta be really close , and if ya wear glasses or need reading glasses,..have them ON! let us know would ya! thanks for listening to me ramble....FFS's ......:bravo:
Anyhow , have an awesome day all you friends of mine!:Namaste::circle-of-love:

Oh, i should mention this too. That infestation of Root Aphids was the reason i switched to "rootbuilder pots" They don't grow coils of main feeder branches , they grow i fine root mass that's free from roots that coil a pot's outer edges looking for moisture. The RA's chew thru the feeder branch circling the pot , and then all that root beyond that point dies , so you get swift death!

Thanks Duggan, that's what I was hoping for. Another way to confirm aphids or not. I'm all but positive they are gnats, but aphids scare me. I'll be pacing back and forth until I know for sure one way or the other. Now I got the heebee jeebees lol
