Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Energy can be thought of as a bulking agent, but it also "sweetens" produce by increasing sugars, due to all the calcium.
The cationic drench is loaded with phosphate and sulfate....both strongly reproductive in effect, as well as the cations from NH4, which is also reproductive in effect.

While all that will definitely bring on smell and flavor, I found that it's too strong for my liking. I like the more mild, smooth taste. If you want to feel it in your throat and mouth....try the C-drench.

I also wonder if using that didn't mess up my 4th run soil.....either way, your produce is going to kick ass.

mahalo doc great info.

@Curso - thanks bro I get lost in all these journals. Appreciate you chiming in!

No problem, I play with things sometimes maybe a little to much. I was seeing if there was a difference, I found with my sour diesel I liked the stronger flavor so it worked out well. So I tried that with the cookies, it didn't work quite as well. The best practice is still the following the directions. There are tweaks you will find as you get to know how the strain reacts in the high brix soil. Otherwise stick to the plan. It just works :)

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Some positive developments to report!

I'm giving the OG and GSC one more try....this time I'm LOWERING the brix to try to emulate the conditions that result in the taste and flavor people are used to with these strains.

K-mag and high P bat guano in the lower half of the pot. Petioles are purple, brix is down as expected.....but these plants seem to like that. While I much prefer the high brix effect in every way, OG in particular is such a classic strain, it seems a crime to not be able to produce it. So, we'll lower brix a bit and see what happens.

On the negative side, I'll need to spray for mites and keep a sharp eye out for PM.

Lemon Paki and Herijuana are freakin' off the hook right now with brix hitting 16-17.

Pics later today.

I'm happy you are giving those 2 another shot Doc. The Cookies are coming on very well after week 8, the scent is much stronger this time around too. Are you going to run SFV again?

Hopefully we can see something familiar to mine soon.

Ohh mites and pm I hate and love this time of year.

I am going to be going north in a few weeks. I would love to see what you could do with my gear.

I propose a trade! That could be very fun!

I'm going to give them one more try. Looks promising so far. The trouble is that some of the other strains I run just kick ass and take names. I can't justify growing substandard product, and I really don't want to deal with pests again....so we'll see.

Hopefully we can see something familiar to mine soon.

I'm running the Tahoe OG this time. It's quite similar to the SFV, which I'll try again soon.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Pretty obvious difference in the 4th run soil - ouch!

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Yep. The buds are still nice and the smell is actually danker and stronger.....but brix is down. It's like a good organic supersoil grow now, which is why I didn't toss it out.

Also, it gave me the idea to try the OG and GSC in poor soil.....

You are always thinking outside the box and this is why I love coming to this journal.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Man that fourth run soil about made my eyes hurt. I think I'll run some purple strains in 4th run when my time comes. The rest is beautiful as usual Doc.

Yeah....I was also dissappointed, but at the same time it gave me a great idea. The 4th run plants are definitely substandard....but at the same time they're shorter and smell stronger.

So, perhaps the OG wants something like that?

1st -3rd run soil continues to perform brilliantly. Funny what one run can do.....

I'm loving the 3rd run, it's best run I have had, hands down.

Well, you might try not recharging the 3rd. run.

If you decide to do a 4th, please let me know how you handled the 3rd run.....It might not be feasible to have perpetual soil....but I love the added humus content when all those roots get digested.

With the warm weather, I can fill a barrel up with soil, mix in some Root Zone, water....and all those roots are GONE in 10 days. Gobble right up.

But sumpin aint right. They told me salts were very, very high. Flushing the medium would help for sure, but I suspect this soil is done.

After a few good rains, I bet it makes stellar soil for raised beds.

Harvest today!

How strange that it goes from best run (3rd) to worst run (4th). Doc I like your idea - no amendment. A bit of zone to eat the roots, and just take it from there? Either way..raised beds or stinky OGs - we still good!

You can start a new thread for those classic strains. "Doc Bud's Classy Low Brix". Ha!

Also, I'd like to thank you again. This branch is the lowest on the plant. The nugs are rock hard, and I don't see anything resembling "popcorn" on this lady. Primo bud only, no fluff. MAHALO!

I've noticed the same with my grow. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd runs of my soil really were producing the High Brix effects to the plants but this time around using it a 4th time I am having much more trouble keeping the plant health up to the high brix standards, even with the same foliar sprays and feedings as before. I think after this run I may be dumping my soil and going fresh again, or possibly mixing up 50% fresh and 50% 5th generation soil.

What I did with my finished 2nd run is...I recooked the soil (conditioner and amendment from kit #2 for run 3) that I had been using for a couple weeks then added 1 small bag of ProMix hp and 30 pounds of worm castings. 3rd run is awesome, I've only used about half the soil so far, the other half has been cooking for a whole flower cycle + 4 weeks and is going to be used in a couple days.

Thanks doc! Kit grow. Nirvana Northern Lights autoflower. Outdoors in an absurdly small 5 gallon fabric smart pot. 3-5mil feedings every other watering. Wish she was as frosty as some of your specimens like the C-99...but I gotta start somewhere. This is by and far the loveliest plant I've grown! No bugs in my normally bug infested yard! Even if I'm not seeing frosted fan leaves like yours, I'm more than grateful for the pest resistance, and I hope these new beans I got have a keeper or two for me!
