Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

I'm getting there, myself. I'm in the new and novel position of having more than I can consume, and I'm not even slightly interested in distribution, so at some point soon it won't be "wasting pot", it'll be saving pointless effort. It's not like I'm actually gonna smoke it - I have better pot I'll smoke.

Meanwhile, I'm learning.

Learning....that's what makes it fun, interesting, rewarding and super groovy. I feel exactly the same way bro!

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Colombian......huge mistake. I've hacked it back many times and still over a pound on this stupid plant. Never again.....still a month out from harvest.

Trouble with 4th run soil! The magic is gone after the 4th cycle. I'm workin' on it!

The first, second and third run soils are still performing as exepcted.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

They look great Doc. With the fourth run being "meh", is the soil just out of balance?

I don't know yet, exactly. But salts were high on the last soil test and I've been pretty aggressive with feeding lately, so I suspect it's salt buildup and ergs like 3000.....like supersoil. The plants remind me what they looked like when I was using Super Soil. Kind of a nice change.....but not where I want to go.

Did you add worm castings? Could the sul pu mag kinda be throwing things off?

Yep to both! But even without that, salts were high on second run testing.

I think it's because outdoors in a field, it rains and things aren't supposed to be planted year round. I think a really good flushing will help.

But even so, if I only 3 runs per bale of soil it's worth it. Run 3 was fantastic, but run 4.....not so great.

Oh yeah run 3 is by far the best run yet IMO. I'll try with the 4th and see if I get the same results. I added the small bale of promix and 30# of castings to the finished and rinsed 2nd run.

The outdoor thing makes perfect sense. Yep 3 runs out of one bale is pretty fantastic.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

If 3 rounds is the end of the line for high brix cannabis plants...is round 4 the beginning of a vegetable and herb garden?

Or could it be cut with another bale of promix and still used??

Certainly it could be used outdoors. I'm thinking the problem is probably no more than in need of a good flushing. The whole thing gets out of control if you insist on using soil in perpetuity. The testing and every changing amendments become a chore.

I'll see what the trouble is, find out a solution and weigh the cost vs the benefit. 3 runs is still worth it to me. If it needs to sit in a bin for a while and get rinsed, I can arrange that, but at that point the whole operation takes on another level of complexity for space-challenged growers.

I'm doing all this in order to learn.....when the time comes 10,000 sq. feet of climate controlled greenhouses with black out curtains will be set up with fertigation. Probably use the native soil wherever I set up to start with.

But some laws have to change first.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

I had a real good out loud laugh about your wife's comments. My gf is very picky too. A buddy gave me a branch a gopher had chewed off in his outdoor grow. The branch was very young with small buds. I wanted the practice drying though. I think the some turned out fine; my gf won't touch it! Hopefully someday I will be able to grow her some stuff that she likes. That is when I will know I am getting there. I know it is doable standing on all of your (brix guys) shoulders. Any theories on why the fourth run with the same soil loses its magic?
:high-five:

I suspect the salts are too high and it needs a good flush. If K is too high, I will chuck the soil. Growing melons would help, but not practical where I'm at.

Here's what a pre-bloom trim looks like. I got 8 nice clones from this plant while pruning it up for flower. Notice the top 5 nodes are left. Some strains I leave 3 or 4.

Very nice doc!

I notice you prune a bunch in the mid section, leaving the top branches, as well as a few on the very bottom. Is this to promote a more open structure?

Also, your two week later shot, that plant only three nodes then topped?

Thanks doc! Hoping to get more frosty results from some new beans I picked up from sannie: extrema, huckleberry kush, and blue hammer. I'm psyched!

Hey bro!

I prune from the bottom up, not in the middle. What you're seeing there is a clone that was topped after it had 4 sets of leaves, so there can be from 3 to 6 tops, depending on the clone. I try to get several tops that are open in the middle, so light gets down inside. The weight of the branches will often open up the plant, and I use stakes and ties to do the same. Ideally, the soil gets light.

Yep....that two week shot was topped to the top 4 nodes. They grow fast when they bloom.

Ahh my eyes playing tricks on me! Thanks for clarifying.

What's your opinion on a late flower blast of cat drench? I was thinking I'd finish her off with a half/three quarters dose of cat drench, water once or twice, then a dose of transplant, and wAter till chop. I know you strongly suggest flushing the medium to wash the cat drench out. Will how much water used to flush affect the soil in round 2? Don't want to mess up the recycle.

I find the taste is negatively effected by a late bloom cat drench. it's not bad....just not quite up to my snobbish standards. Energy will fatten and sweeten. I highly recommend finishing with energy.

But experimentation is perfectly fine. This is still all pretty new. So....let me know how it goes!

Yes thanks that's just what I wanted to know. I'm solely concerned with flavor! If energy will give it to me - then energy it is!

I think in one of the running high brix journals someone mentioned that they thought flavor was down because they harvested while on an energy week? So they said next time they will finish on transplant. Would a reproductive cycle or growth cycle would encourage more trichome and terpene development?

My fan leaves are yellowing and calyx almost all swollen!!!! Ill post a pic this afternoon! Can't wait to get me some high brix stone!!!

That was a test bro with 2nd run soil...

Energy can be thought of as a bulking agent, but it also "sweetens" produce by increasing sugars, due to all the calcium.
The cationic drench is loaded with phosphate and sulfate....both strongly reproductive in effect, as well as the cations from NH4, which is also reproductive in effect.

While all that will definitely bring on smell and flavor, I found that it's too strong for my liking. I like the more mild, smooth taste. If you want to feel it in your throat and mouth....try the C-drench.

I also wonder if using that didn't mess up my 4th run soil.....either way, your produce is going to kick ass.

That was a test bro with 2nd run soil...
