Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Hey Doc, was wondering if you have any photo's of the Cherry Pie and the GSC or if you have already posted some that I missed. I currently am running both these strains, as well as the SFV OG you mentioned, but I was curious what yours looked like in comparison to mine. The GSC I am running is frosty as all hell for being in the day 35 range, but the buds are tiny little things for as far along as it is. I was just curious if yours looked similar. My Cherry Pie on the other hand couldn't look better and is frosty and full. I just wanted to compare to see what yours looked like vs what mine are at.

You could find pics of the cherry pie pages back....maybe 10 or 15 pages back. It looked beautiful, but performance was lackluster.

No one wanted it after trying it. It's not bad....tasted good, etc. Compared to everything else I run, people just thought it was boring. "Cherry pie....yeah....I was hoping for some Lemon Paki....do you have anything besides Cherry Pie?" Got sick of hearing that.

I'm not happy with the GSC so far either. Super tall, lanky, buds are forming, but kinda larpy. Not impressed. Same with Tahoe OG.

Now SFV OG....that's a keeper.

The more I grow, the more I find myself wanting plants that are landrace.....or at least pure.

Here's my theory: Prohibition has produced adaptational gardening methods....high yields, small spaces, hydroponics, etc. Naturally, some strains perform better under these circumstances than others.

Chemdawg family strains: Sour D/OG/headband seem to do really well in hydro. They were bred for that type of growing, and if you want classic taste and flavor, hydro delivers what people have come to expect.

On the other hand, these same strains grow differently in High Brix. Some might say "better," some might say worse....but one thing is clear, they're not the same as hydro so people are put off by it sometimes.

On the other hand....if you can get some pure genetics or at least simple, stabilized crosses, magic happens. When growing something "wild" that has roots that demand soil and minerals....not roots that were bred to like hyrdro....all of a sudden you've got weed that no one else has ever tasted...mind blowing stuff.

I think I'm going to try Mendo Purps after a large production run is over. It hasn't changed since the early 70's....should respond really well in high brix soil.

I'm working on a "fix" so that the sativa traits in everything don't dominate. Some people really like their indicas! Of course, you can get classic Indica buds from high brix.....just choose a pure indica to start with!

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

After writing you that, I guessed you were going to say this. If they are underperforming, they probably wouldnt be around to take pics. You taught me a bunch Doc. Thank you.

The comment on naming plants made me laugh Doc! I used to get pretty wound up about plants that were unhealthy and I was of the mindset to nurse them back to health. Now, I guess I care less and have a lot less attachment to individual plants. It took me a while to learn that one.

Is the white residue on the sugar leaves of the C99 the new PM/Insect spray? I noticed it in a couple pics, but it might be my imagination. Any pics on that crazy columbian? Is she still around?

The residue is the insect spray....good eye.

The Colombian is still around.....I'm embarassed. Total failure to control height....it's woven itself around the OG and GSC, so I'm procrastinating cutting it down till the OG and GSC are gone.

Had 3 CG in the greehouse.....down to 2. No room. 14+ feet tall, totally predatory. Vigor doesn't begin to describe it. If I let this plant have 2 lights and an 8x4 tray to itself it still wouldn't be happy. I've got maybe 4 to 5 weeks to go on it.....don't know if it will make it.

I'll take some pics next time for ya. The only reason it's still around is because it's woven into the GSC and OG and is actually supporting them! I also greatly enjoy the effect of CG, but will be happy to wait for the greenhouse.

I just realized that I don't remember you ever mentioning light cycles. I just assume you run 12/12. What sort of experimentation have you done? My experience is that pure sativas respond better to longer nights. We used to run 9/15 with our Columbians back in the 80s. It helped shorten the stretch and encourage full bloom. That wouldn't be very helpful when you're running multiple strains, of course, so it's not feasible in your room. But I don't think I've run across journals that run longer nights with sativas.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Hey doc I would like to buy a kit from you but I don't have the post count to pm. Can someone transplant plants vegged in 3gal coco pots into 7 gal pots using the kit system?

Hey Gray!

If I ever try it again indoors, that's exactly what I'll do. Like you said, multiple strains make it tough.

Doc thanks for the suggestion to up my feeding schedule, I thought she looked pretty good before, but wow soil energy must have been low. Lots of leaves going darker green and extra shiny. Sweet!

Ill heed your advice and use much larger pots. Likey 10g fabric/airpot if I do another outdoor run.

Here we are a few days ago, at around 4 weeks since pistils and before I gave her her second alternate feeding. she looks quite a bit better than this today, ill try to post a comparison when she is really beaming :thumb:

I agree with this 100%!!! GSC is still in the air for me too. I look at the plants I have going in hb and then go to the hydro grow. Same mother's, totally different plants. Goes for 3 of the 4 strains I have ran in both. The 4th is still a baby. I have started 2 ak seeds too they're a pure indica, we'll what happens(if they pop their heads up).

Hot Damn Doctor! That C99 has so many trichomes on it you cant see the top of the leaf anymore, just astounding. If it is accessible I would love to see what the stems look like on some of your girls. I too would be really interested in seeing some pics of the greenhouse plants as well. Do your plants stems look any different because of the High Brix? There is a very popular seed company (not a sponsor) who does strain reviews, and also some very popular strain hunting videos. My problem with the way they do their seed reviews(although very entertaining) is that they compare hydro to soil without giving the soil any fertilizer. I wish they did hydro vs. High Brix or something close to make it equitable. That would be really fascinating stuff. I am not sure if it is too far off topic on your thread but that would be very interesting to see how the hydro plants and brix plants you mentioned looked so different, yet are from the same mother plant. I also wanted to thank you again for popping in on my journal and giving me the advise about over watering and possibly too much N. I have made adjustments, and things are doing better now. Thanks Doc-
:thanks:

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

C99 looks fantastic Doc!!! Looks like that trim will make some stellar hash :high-five:

Love the topdressing!!!

Your SFV was it super lemony?

Mine always came out with a heavy "resin" smell. Think Turpentine, but pleasant. I never thought it was overtly lemon...but I haven't grown it in real soil...only in the 6-5-3, which doesn't compare.

No greenhouse pics right now....maybe in a couple days.

Wow doc im speechless. C99 just astounding. What version soil are these plants in??

These are in First/Second run soil.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

off topic question for you Doc and any others that may know.

I plan or retiring next year if not sooner and would like to supplement my lowly Social Security with some part time work.

Is there actually money to be made by hiring out as a bud trimmer in Calif?

In nor cal, if you know people you can get paid to trim, but it's not the kind of work most folks choose when they retire.....

If I wanted to work in the industry I'd probably choose Colorado.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

got some pictures.

Also got some problems. The "4th run" soil isn't performing properly. We might just be at the end of the line and need to let the soil sit fallow for a while, perhaps run rainwater through it, grow a couple cover crops.

I don't know, but I'll get back to everyone when I find out.

Still, if we can only go 3 cycles on things it's worth it, IMO.

Here's more on the C99....possibly the most resinous plant I've grown yet. Also some Heri and Paki growing up strong.

Doc, I don't think anyone has ever grown a C99 that looked like those. That's just unreal!

Wow that C99 is going to be killer!! Look at all the amber trichomes!!! That will be a one hit wonder!!!

I suppose when you take an 8 week strain to 11 weeks it starts to look different.

Interestingly, under the scope we're mostly clear with a few cloudy. The anthocyantins in the leaves make it look amber, but it actually wasn't.

I can't seem to get triches to go amber anymore.
