Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Screenshot it, idk if they allow file uploads other than pictures

The screenshot won't show anything but the results for a single scenario. I think I can get a shot of a simplified version for both the results and then showing the formulas. Let me give it a whirl.

Here it is, FWIW:

Hey Doc I have done my first Brix reading today after 37 days of veg and 4 days into flower. Plucked 2 bottom leaves, squeezed them and the result... Brix=10. Is it a good result? I am a little bit too high in K...
I've done lab analysis and my Ca:Mg:P:K:N ratio is 18-1-8-25-6.
I know the ideal ratio should be 18-2-2-1-0.3. So I'm definitely too high on K and N.
What's your opinion considering I have Brix=10?
The plant I used for the measurement is a OG. It looks small coz I've LSTed her but it should be about 12-13 inches

10 is a very good measurement for veg. I like to see them up over 12 in bloom, so test some leaves again in a few days and see what's up. Since you used 2 bottom leaves the first time, try to use the same kind of leaves next time so the readings are somewhat comparable.

I've found, and others have the same experience, that readings over 12 are usually insect free.

FYI you can use Google Docs I do believe they have a spreadsheet doc app there, transfer the file there then provide the link here and everyone will be able to view and download it as well, you set it for view only so nobody makes changes. its free :) There are of course issues with privacy from big brother NSA so maybe not after all oh well.

Doc

what if a 1 or 2gl kit soil clone is given to a non kit soil user? any major issues with that? He will most likely be using an organic soil of some kind.

The last two grows with my stupersoil have been planted right in the pots the previous grow was in (have I stumbled into LOS by accident?). The plants seemed to do very well in it.

PS

I had 2 minor and 1 major problems with one of my P300s and each time Mark has been extremely helpful.

Kudos to Mark and Platinum LED's :thumb:

The times I have given HB veg plants to organic growers they have eached remarked how that former HB plant was their best plant at harvest....so no problem.

I think it will work well if you have more applications, rather than less. I hit the Grape Apes with it a week ago, and now the stems went all soft and they need plenty of staking---which they almost never do without the OG drench----and they have a different flavor and smell. This is what a typical OG does....can't hold itself up, sticky buds, really strong smell.

It will weaken your plants but they'll start smelling more like the hydro versions....only hopefully much better. I haven't smoked any yet. Grape Ape doesn't need the OG Drench, BTW. I'll go back to growing it without, but I wanted to see what it did and I was pleased.

interesting results Doc, sounds like what ive been needing. The blue dreams im running have smelled and tasted "different" then the last time I grew them, grown in organic soil with compost tea, before HB growing. very good but not the exact taste I was wanting from the strain, so im curious to see if this will bring it back. I sure like the buzz better from the HB grown Blue dream :)

Thanks for the help!:Namaste::high-five:

That's the thing....most of us much prefer the HB effect and the smoothness of the flavor, etc. But we also expect and are used to the particular flavor of named strains that we have grown used to....

I've actually thought about completely re-naming strains or tacking "High Brix" onto the name for certain ones.

I've decided that I will mostly chase after landrace strains when possible for these reasons.

You know what would be great, if Doc started his own High BriX seed company were new high brix hybrid seeds were created. What do you think Doc? Maybe with the collaboration of some of the larger scale high brix growers and a clone of yourself? :smokin2:

I 100% agree with you. for instance my blue dream since it taste nothing like the "hydro" blue dream, ill tell a buddy A, here is some high brix blue haze instead of blue dream and the next thing you know though buddy A's favorite smoke went from blue dream to blue haze lol...little does he know same strain, diff grow medium/method and you get a diff, mostly better variation.:)

its incredible what happens in HB plants flavor, buzz, ect. I have an Island Sweet Skunk pheno so very different from any other ISS ive smoked in many years/many purchased sacks but never grew it before. out of 3 diff phenotypes from the same seed batch from next gen seeds, I found this one im holding on to for along time! it smells like the sweetest sugar gum drop with a real nice undertone of a sweet lemon flavor/smell and a light hint of skunk at the end. the buzz is an all day, happy, go to work, work out, play disc golf :) kind of buzz.

I have over ferted both times feeding it the same as the other strains in the room, causing burnt leaf tips and some curling up at the tips. much less this time around(at 35 days since pistil formation) but still tuning it in. my blue cheese I have to feed Epsom and fairly heavy energy with 1/4oz transplant every 5-7 days to get her to act right, compare that to the ISS where I may only need to drench her every 10-14 days....That's what im looking for, light feeder, at least avg to above avg yield and incredible flavor/smell and buzz. all found with the kit and the right strain!!!:high-five:
im waiting to get my time and moneys worth of of the strains im running currently but will be switching to some Landrace strains as soon as time and space allows.

ACE seeds: zamaldelica
Violeta
zamal hash
CANNOBIGEN seeds: sugar loaf

These are the next seeds to hit my garden...I cant wait.

just to share some quick info I just picked incase any one else needs this info. as of now im not running a journal so this is where im gonna share it, hopefully that's cool:)

im looking for LED to cover 4x8 tables replacing 2 1000w hps per table.

as of a few sponsors this is the info ive gathered after speaking with each one.

Platinum LED:

FOUR of the P600 per 4x8 table

Dorm grow G8:

TWO G8-600 and FOUR 90w reds per 4x8 table

Advanced LED:

TWO XL650 per 4x8 table

Hey Doc, I just got done transplanting my seedlings, and in the process of doing it I got a bit confused on proper procedure for use of transplant. I mentioned it in my journal linked in my sig if you'd like to read the details, but basically I wasn't sure which set of directions to follow, as it seems the packaging of the kit differs from the instruction in the "How to use the kit" post. Could you clear that up for me a bit? Thank you!!!

I posted on your Journal friend. :cheesygrinsmiley:

I must say that I just picked up my p600 and this thing is bright gonna save my penny's so I can get another one in a few months. It has a small crack in the gray case but it seems to be working just fine I might give mark a call but more than likely I will just let it be. It does seem like I have more red diodes than that I have seen in the pictures but what ever I am happy with it. Come on payday I need to get my hb kit so I can taste the difference.

You already had living organic soil Hash Hound, just by another name.

What you stumbled on was the concept of no-till. Are you enjoying it? Having any issues?

SGA....thanks for this. It's neat to see the diff. manufacturers ideas for the same size space. What about cost SGA?....are they all pretty close or what? They'le all do a great job ,no doubt,so it might just come down to cost. I use a combination of Budmaster2 and G8 lights and really like their all red ufo's. Should be interesting. Have fun making your choices pal....cheers eh!:high-five:

I know if i had the cash ,i'de go with the newr versions of the Budmaster2's. their very ,very good lights....but ya gotta pay big for em!

I love it.

I stick a shovel in right around where the original 1gl pot was planted and push in and cut all the roots around that area. you can really tell how much harder it is to stick the shovel in if you are to close. I then wiggle a bit and pull out the root ball about the size of the original 1gl.

I toss in a scoop of minerals and some powdered nutes etc. mix it in and replant.

Two grows have done very well so far. and it is the 4th run of the (amended) soil. I may empty the bags this time just to fluff up the dirt if it is getting to compacted at the bottom.

A harvest time question for Doc or anyone that can chime in;

I have one more week til the plants are ready to pick, and the vegging replacements have just about grown out of the tiny closet they are in (bad timing my part).

Would it hurt the flowering plants to go one week 18hrs light if I stuck the replacements in there with them before harvest?

Yep. Use the most recent set of directions, linked to in my signature below.

The new Roots! product is more or less complete and there is no need for what we used to call Transplant Water.

Here's what the directions say:

Seeds:

Using a gallon sized container of newly cooked High Brix soil, make sure the soil is still slightly moist from the barrel. Not soaking wet....but moist.

Using a pencil, or chopstick or a non-functioning vape pen, make a divet in the soil about 1/4 inch deep. Add a small amount of ROOTS! in and around this hole, in which you deposit the seed and lightly cover with surrounding dirt. Gently water with 1/4 strength Transplant if needed to keep the soil moist, but not wet.

Clones:

Pretty much the same as seeds, but use enough ROOTS! to completely dust the roots and put a small amount at the bottom of the hole. Water with 1 pint of water, or 1/4 strength Transplant drench.
