Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Which leaves did you test? From the second pic?

Here's the thing: When testing brix, you need to take healthy leaves from a healthy plant.

Dead leaves that are half dry will have very high brix....due to low moisture content. Motor oil has brix over 100....

You must take healthy, vibrant tissue to get an accurate reading.

The picture you posted second might have a high brix reading.....but the first and third pics don't look quite right.

This made a few things make sense to me. Thanks Doc.

This is probably how I got the really high brix in the small pot, that I haven't been able to replicate.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

i took a leaf from up top first killed me to take it it was one of the highest 2 on the plant, second leaf was a healthy looking one from the middle of the plant close to a bud, no dry leaves they were very juicy fresh leaves or i would not been able to get any juice i was using gloved fingers for the main part of squeezing, i tried using pliers and it made mush i could not get clean juice from, i had just watered with plain water and no sprays or food for at least 24 hrs, last thing was tea&yucca

Congratulations! you just set a new world's record for brix.

Seriously, there's something amiss with the sampling technique. I'm sorry to say that your plants are NOT 25 brix. (Dont feel bad, Mine aren't either)

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

ok well i walked you thru it, its a brand new calibrated meter,i wore gloves, made sure to fully cover the lens with juice ,used fresh growth,no sprays for 24 hours min. so what did i do wrong? i want to know ,i want accurate readings more so than anyone, , whats your method for testing? i have been following every high brix journal i can find and reading every website, article, and snippet i can find on the subject, i have watched every vid i can find on how to take a reading, so if im missing something i dont know what, is shortly after lights on a factor?

I don't know what the problem is....I just know that your plants aren't 25 brix! I also know mine aren't even 17 brix this time.....let alone 25.

If you measure brix of a ripe grape on the vine.....26 is a great number. However, if you measure a sundried raisin on the vine it's going to be over 40, simply because there's less water in the tissue.

Same with leaves. If you press juice out of leaf litter.....dead leaves....you can get readings all over the place, due to moisture loss, fungi and fermentation of necrotic tissue.

I don't know why your measurements are so high......but all the accompanying signs of High Brix aren't exhibited in your garden.

Do you have pests or mold?

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

no pests, mold, etc i just took a leaf from up top and sqeezed it untill i had enough juice to cover the prism no bubbles or particulate, i went for the top because it seemed like the juiciest part and remember reading that was best,i almost went for a tiny bud,,anyway i'll keep testing and working on it, and figure out whats wrong with my plants, thanks a bunch doc:thumb:

If your plants are 25 brix....nothing is wrong. I need to figure out what's wrong with MY plants!

I don't know what to say.....it's pretty obvious based on the pics that your plants are average brix....nothing extraordinary. The high reading could be caused by any number of factors.

I remember when Vapedog had a stupendous grow and was getting brix of 6....very depressing. It turns out he wasn't crushing the material properly and after discussing it, he took new readings and things were much better.

Still, no one has gotten 25. I sure haven't.

My plants look OK at times.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Man Doc, looking good over here. Clones rooting in 5 days, thats crazy talk. :thumb:

Whats the plan for the topped Columbian Gold? (I think I picked it out). Greenhouse or indoor?

BID, I think you should expand your sample size. Maybe sample all of your plants and others plants if you could. You may find you get high readings on all plants. If you get a wide range of readings, some low some high, your high brix plants may just be really high. Different refractometers may read differently also.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Yea I am excited as well! Not sure if I am gonna start a journal but you can bet at the very least for me to be active in this Q&A!

Peace,

Man I am really considering a side by side comparison with the pairs I have of the sour diesal, blue dream and GSC that are in the quickstart pro-mix now. A high brix vrs say a FFOF/earthjuice regimen and each strain in each soil and same exact containers and soil amounts for the outdoor grow. It would be very interesting to measure the brix levels for comparison and overall appearance.

Question Doc: I have all the starts in the quickstart now as the soil cooks could I still transplant them into a different soil for a comparison? I would think so but its late and my brain is dead after a long session of cards lol.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

i went online and found more "how to test brix" vids and decided to try again today i did the pestel & mortar and squeezed it thru a screen and got quite a bit more juice this time i really covered the prism and again white and blue intersected at 24 brix, since im new to these products and using a refractometer, i have little to go on in that dept , tomorrow i will test the other plants and see what kind of results i have there, perhaps its a freak plant, i noticed it was packing on thick trichs a week into flower, much more than normal for that strain, ,one thing is sure i'll keep plugging away till i have data & anwsers, cuz damn i want to know, it seems a refracto is a rather simple device a kid could use, i remember vapedoggs low brix woes and the gorgeous plants,i remember thinking well to hell with brix its gotta be b.s.! lol but i will figure this out, the plants may not look all that good in the pics but to my eyes having grown this blue dream cut out many times, and this one looks very different than it has in the past much more neon than usual, normally its alot darker with stem decorations, this time its looking very different this round, ah well icould only be so lucky to have a 25 brix bitch:thumb:

Again....if we measure motor oil, it's gonna have really high brix....( or more correctly, a really high refractive index).

I don't have an explanation as to why your readings are so high. I have some ideas, but nothing more than a guess.

You have the highest brix readings ever recorded for MJ sir. I wouldn't change a thing, if you're confident your plants are healthy and doing all you want them to do.

You're leaving us all in the dust with readings of 25. I can't touch that.

BTW, did you grow this?

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

yup thats a bud growing on the blue dream girl with the stupid high reading that pic is like all the buds on that plant up close and thats at i believe 34 days since flip want me to test one of its leaves?, you like that shot?

I like it just fine! In fact, I want a bite.

Post some real clear pics of your plant that has 25 brix. I'd like to study it a bit.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

ok i will go do a photoshoot with her tonight after lights on 9:45 mountain time so at least 11pm before i can get shots up let me know what you want to see specifically and i'll do my best, my camera is a samsung galaxy tab 10.1,so there are some limitaions

I'd just like to see stems, leaves and petioles.

I'm gonna put a call into the lab and see what they have to say. Again, I have some ideas, but nothing more than a guess at this point.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

well cool i have some theories too, it may be due to the coco loaded with minerals and mykos coco wont hold onto things the way soil can if i strike that perfect balance perhaps its like hitting the nitro ! plants grow much faster in coco bout the same as hydro, so i suspect uptake is very rapid, and perhaps thats a factor they can uptake more and faster ramping up readings i really gotta get some readings on the other plants, and see if they are all elevated, im gonna get a good note/log app for my tablet so i can recored everything ,and get some data collected, this has my interest piqued to the extreme!

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Hey Doc,

Did you see my post? BID's post got me thinking about brix levels.

Ideas on the comparison for my outdoor grow? Soils etc.
Let's say I used pro mix non brix style for the comparison? After using it could I then still use it later for a 1st run kit? I would think not since it won't be pure and will have other crap added into it after the grow but just wanted to check first and get your thoughts. If not I will just go with a cheaper standard soil for the comparison.

Peace,

Please use the kit exactly as directed. It represents about 600.00 worth of investment and many hours of my time to arrive at what the lab says is the best.

Ok Doc....as I stated I pretty much came to the conclusion that that would be the case that the pro mix would be altered after a non brix grow for comparison use and non usable for a run at a kit at a later date but just wanted to make sure.

I have no intentions of not using the kit to the letter of what I have going currently. I was trying to kill 2 birds with the re use of the non brix comparison pro max soil after I was finished. Ok so scrap that whole idea and question Doc, it was a stupid idea in the first place and thanks again!

Ok back to the original idea of the outdoor grow: Doc's High Brix vrs FFOF and Earthjuice product line. 25 gal containers and sour diesal, GSC and blue dream side by side during the whole grow.

Peace,

That sounds like a winner!
I'd be interested in comparing the investment/cost for each too. I'm looking forward to it!

In the mean time.....here are some more pics. Champagne is alive for maybe another week, but don't tell her that!

This is the greenhouse crop for this year, minus one of the Colombians....I'm gonna give one a shot indoors.

I'll use a couple methods to try to keep it short, including a Soul Synthetics product that supposedly helps with that. No paclobutrazole however!

The rest of the colombian will done up high brix in the greenhouse. It's always incredible.....just have to wait till late December.

Here's the Champagne
