Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Overwatered would be doing a drench every other day and never giving the roots time to dry out. Drenching when the plant is thirsty isn't overwatering.....drenching when the plant is already well watered is how we overwater.

I've thought about sending out instructions....sure have. I'm not ready to "go live" yet, for a couple reasons, not the least of which is that I'm already quite busy. Eventually, the kit will come with instructions, better packaging, etc.

I haven't said this in a while, but we're all BETA testing these products still.

Printing is quite expensive, so I don't like to print stuff up that is going to change. After I get the OG drench dialed in, I'll probably do a major update/rewrite to the directions.

But a week on timing of the Re-charge is no big deal. Like Curso said, things are quite forgiving with the kit.

The thinking behind the re-charge is that all this stuff is leaching out the bottom of the pot....and re-charging too late means the plant grows a week or two without all the minerals it needs....re-charging too early means the plant grows a week or two later in bloom without all the minerals.....so the timing is based on that.

8 week strains could probably do it at any time. 12 week strains and now we're wanting week 3 on the re-charge.

Just learn to use the products and you'll soon write your own timetable based on the principles and properties of the products AND your increasingly well honed intuition as a master gardner.

Doc, thanks. Have to keep reminding myself that we're all still Beta testing the product(s)! Of course, I WANT THE WORLD AND I WANT IT NOW! - patience, Mike, patience.

Now, another issue: yesterday, I discovered mealy bugs. Not bad, but.... I reviewed your Pest and Disease doc as well as a google search and decided to try some lady bugs. 1500 (smallest container I could find locally) were released this morning. It reminded me of the scene from a somewhat recent movie about Mars where they find fields of green vegetation growing only to discover its full of creepy/crawly things that eventually get into one guys suit... well I digress. Anyway, the lady bugs dispersed, though it appears that the vast majority of them died during the day. Followed directions, etc. so not sure what's going on.

So, not sure if I should try another round of LBs or try an insecticide (water, soap, oil) and spray them well. I'm in week 4 of 12/12. What is your experience with mealy bugs and do you have a safe (organic) method for eliminating them? I know that "pests" aren't much of an issue with HB, but I hate the thought of 1) losing the crop or worse 2) vaporizing a bug!

Anyone else have a sure fire (and) safe method for eliminating mealy bugs?

Hey Doc, just wondering where did you find the study from Von Dank about which soil that produced high terpene quality/quantity? Thanks

Check back a few pages. It's in there.

The study didn't indicate which soil was "best." It merely documented that different VAM in the soil will have an effect on terpene production...something we already knew but couldn't point to a published study to "prove" it.

Hello Doc,
What are your thoughts on pure coconut water used as a feeding, perhaps once a month ?

Many Thanks & Have a good 1

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

I've thought about this! It's too high in K for our purposes, but I've always wondered what finishing a strain like OG on coconut water would do......please let me know if you try this!

Hey BD..Doc,iv'e tried CW for a couple of grows. My grows were in organic soil, but with no real mineral content. It's very costly as well...when i get it on sale it's 7.00/2litres.It's really great to drink...very thirst quenching, indeed. If someone uses it ,i recomend pure(not from concentrate) with nothing added,of course.Yes BD...like Doc said, it's very high in K.(potasium).They say it is good for "seed set" if your into that. Anyhow ,hope this helps a bit . Later eh.:tokin:

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

using freeze dried coconut water may be preferable to fresh unless by fresh you mean chopped in the last day or so.
i can refer anyone interested to the academic studies. if interested pm me plz.

Doc have you mentioned your rh and temp settings during flowering? I have read a few accounts of folks stating increased trichome production with rh below 40. I know you grow some frosty frauleins. What is your ideal environment?

as always appreciate the expertise.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

My 2cents on below 40 RH: seems stressful.

Doc, I have a bunch of used kit soil from a bunch of 10+ week plants that all finished pretty rough. They were in 7gal equivalent root makers, so only about 5gallons of soil, and I was using tap water mid-200ppm. Since switching to RO and bigger pots haven't seen any issues, I even have one in one of those 7gal root makers and it's doing really good. It's led me to believe I had a tap water/bicarbonate issue. That plant however is almost finished at 9 weeks, the plants that didn't do so good all were 12-13 weeks before finishing. Never really figured if it was small pot or hard water.

Here's my question, is this soil still good to recycle? I was going to cut it with a bale of promix and only use one kit to amend the whole lot. I almost have a bales worth of recycle.

The rH in my flowering room goes from a low of 38....during the early lights on time, to a high of about 59, during the 20 minutes or so when the lights shut off. Mostly it stay right around 55%.

You can get more resin with cold, dry nights, but brix also goes down. Manipulating these things is all part of the art and science of growing.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Doc, (RE post 3062). I spent a bit of time yesterday looking for mealy bugs (after a second round of Lady bugs - first batch (mostly) died within 24 hours.) I did not find one mealy bug, but found a lot of Scale! Mostly lower fan leaves. All plants. I could not find any on sugar leaves or flowers (end of week 4 of 12/12). I removed as many of the heavily infected leaves that I could, but being in a SCROG it's hard to get to all plants effectively. I applied some AzaMax yesterday, avoiding the flowers as best I could, and will continue to inspect the plants daily. My question is, should I continue foliar spraying with Stress? When and how often? Brix? As always - thanks!

Scale? CAn you include some pics.

Sure. These were taken today, from two different leaves.

Awesome close up. I would love to see more close ups of the trichomes developing on buds like this.

Any thoughts doc?
sorry Tav. I must have missed that.

Yeah...cut that soil into some fresh promix, but try to flush it good first. I'm starting to give the pots a good flushing right after I cut the main stem off and then putting the soil into rotation.

Using tap water like that is going to build up bicarbonates, which can be mitigated by cutting it into fresh soil.
