Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Hey Docbud!!! Hope all is well. I just wanted to invite you over to my journal because I have an exciting announcement I will be revealing later tonight or tomorrow. I think you may already have a clue what it is :) hahah :)

I also had a question for you... With pro mix...mid to late flowering, how much volume are you watering per plant, and how frequently? I am really having a hard time with promix as it just never wants to dry up for me. I am killing my roots by it staying soggy, any solutions?

If I my lend my $.02....doc recommends light top offs late in flower. For my 7gal pots, that would be less than a gallon, maybe 2/3rds. They def don't drink as much later in bloom. I haven't had any issues with overwatering, but I am using root makers. Maybe don't soak them so much after week 4 or 5, just keep the soil moist and alive! Oh ya you mentioned that you were gonna wait for leaf droop before water, while I agree that's an excellent way to know when she's thirsty, dry soil doesn't keep the biota too happy, so keeping her moist is best for microbe populations.

I'm sure doc has something smarter to say than I.

Hey Tavosvo!! Thanks man for your suggestions... I don't know what I am doing wrong.. I use about 4.5 gallons per watering (spread evenly between 6-7 pots, and I water about 1x per week. Even using the "finger trick" by digging my finger in 2" and seeing if its moist... When the top 2" are dry I stick my soil probe in (moisture) and it usually read very moist about 1/2 down the pot...????? this is what puzzles me...why are my girls not sucking up water in the bottom half of the pot? I never had this issue when I used other soils, so the only thing I am thinking is it is either the promix, or its the square pots that I am using...maybe I need to drill a ton of holes in them? or put a fan down blowing on the pots?

I'm clueless but it always seems to happen mid late flowering, my girls start dropping fan leaves like crazy...

I am seeking to get some fiber pots again, they seemed to let the soil dry much quicker....too dry of soil, not good, as the same as too wet of soil...I'm trying to find that happy medium :)

Icemud, you ever thought about using air pots? Dunno if that fits your method, but overwatering is non-existent with them.

I used smart pots once, they were great, had a huge yield with them, but I noticed that they liked to build up a lot of "salt" on the fabric, which was a pain to remove aftewords. I may try the airpots though, they seem promising.

I just checked your journal out after seeing the announcement for the announcement....I'm waiting patiently!

Late flowering, I don't water too much, just try to keep it moist, so I water maybe 3/4 to a gallon at a time. However, my soil doesn't stay soggy at all. I can monsoon them if I need to and it still stays spongy with minimal compaction. Also, are you sure it's moisture in the form of soil retention that's killing the roots, or could it be ergs too high in the lower root zone due to a really hot soil?

What's in your mix?

Yup. That's what I recommend. It's in the "In the Lab Thread" early on. I am right in line with you on the amount of water.

Of course, the very best way to tell if they need water is by weight of the pot. I'm always lifting mine and I just know when they need water.

OK, now that I read this I understand what's going on! I had the same type of trouble with Supersoil.....it was too hot for the roots. They just licked at it and got the nutrition, but they couldn't grow in the lower half of the pot very well because of the extreme salt buildup from the supersoil.

I would venture a guess you've got too much of something in the soil that's hurting the roots, so they simply aren't drawing moisture from the lower part of the pot because there are no roots there! If you can pop one out and check I'll bet that's what is happening.

icemud. you ever use wicks in your pots? Doc mud used to, not sure if he still does..look up PWT...perched water table..

The wick thing might make a comeback someday Ziggy. I'm really wanting to go to indoor beds, but that would require some construction work to install some french doors that open out, so I can get the beds in and out. I might go for a bottom feed system with a wick instead.

Excellent root zone discussion going on here! I was thinking something similar: roots not filling the bottom of the pot. I called it though, doc came through with a handful of knowledge as usual!

I lift my pots constantly to check for water. I just can tell now. What's really scary is gonna be figuring out how to water my new 15gal airpots! I think soil volume is 12 gallons, while the 10 gal airpot is only 8gal of soil. Go big or go home. Seed start in 1/2gal for 30 days, then transplant to final veg container- a 2gL square pot. 60 day veg....

Lifting those big pots is gonna be a pain in my ass. At least I shouldn't have to water as often :thumb:

I've been following some guys using probiotic organic farming techniques with grokashi, and one guy swears by his earthbox/global bucket autowatering wick bottom feeder pot thingy. Cheeheeee for the accurate description. Seems like it really keeps the soil biology alive through constant moisture. Not sure what I think about them yet, sounds good in theory, but unsure of "automated" watering in practice.

Couple of things.. Re: weight of the pots.. As the plant grows it gets heavier and will have more moisture in the plant, so will this give a false positive for plant weight? Lol..just thought of below..

If you are growing a couple of large potted plants (1,2) you can always use a scale under the pots..water, weigh, toke...

Yep, the plant gets heavier as you go.....but you can still tell when they need water, especially if you're in the habit of lifting them all the time.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

I keep my smarties elevated so theres almost no contact on the bottoms. This way i check the weight and if the bottom is colder than the sides i know theres still water in the lower part. If its the same temp all around and its light...time for some juice! :)

These will be the last pics for a while, due to me taking a trip. I'll be entrusting the final phase of bloom to my helper, who should do a fine job.

We're in the mid sixth week of bloom and the large fans are starting to drop off. 3-8 weeks to go, depending on the strain. Willie Nelson is looking good! I think it's gonna go off this time....

Lookin tasty as usual Doc.Did the W.N. react normally to her first C.D. ? Just curious how a sativa would react, given it's really not time for her to be building trichs. Any different reaction from her you havn't seen yet?Cheers.

Compared to the last time I tried to grow it, it's doing fantastic. I seems to have shortened nodes and put on heavier flowers this time.

It's a little over 4 feet tall, and I forced it when it was about 6 inches tall.....

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

6 inches...that's just crazy when you think of it.And 4 feet now.I'l never forget one time sitting in a friend's backyard for the first time admiring his few plants he had goin...then he asked me what i thought of them...as i was about to comment ,i realized that about 30 feet from where i was sitting ,he had a raised bed in the one corner. There were two jiant sativas in it ...had to be over 15 feet tall with massive trunks! They were about to peek over top of his cedars for his neighbours to see.He never got much of anything from it though, got to cold and didn't finish properly. They sure were big !Ya...if you even let them get to two feet ,you'de be fighting with it the whole way.Anyhow, have a great trip Doc. Cheers.
