DobeWan's Perpetual Adventure 2.0: The Reboot

Great update, they all look so beautiful Dobe :Namaste: Maybe we could run our pink Kush together some day, some future grow?? :p
I still haven’t dropped another seed of it yet, I just want to ensure it’s at a time when I can keep a close eye on its rise from the coco, so I’m thinking I’ll drop it tonight which should mean it’s planted by Saturday morning, and I can babysit Saturday / Sunday to make sure the seedling has no issues.

I’d wait until you’re ready but I feel like I really want it in this grow given that it’s a great med, and I don’t know what to expect with a Tuna Kush so I don’t want all of my eggs in one basket. I do expect I’ll grow it again, but it might have to get in line. Kosher Kush is next up as far as heavy indica goes for me. I’ve actually been considering an all Kush run at some point too!

Yea vk and rg are very dense plants.. youll get some small buds too, no worries. They would make good hash or oil. Thinking once i start yielding enough all smaller, underdeveloped, stuff goes in the hash/oil bin. That is a great idea with the aog.. shell have some massive colas! It will always be a learning experience. :Namaste:

I have been thinking strongly about what you're kind of getting at anyway toast. I mentioned a couple of posts back having to make some tough decisions about the less developed tops. Tonight I defoliated and took a large number of them off. Most on Violator Kush which was the densest. I opened it up a lot by taking tops that weren't quite as nice, and left all of the strongest tops intact. For the others, not quite as much removal was needed, and I didn't want to go too aggressive across the board anyway, especially after taking a fair bit off of VK. I was hesitant to take much off of Liberty Haze because her thin profile gets better light penetration.

I think the plants are in great position for flower now. I might take a couple of additional stems before stretch finishes but it won't be much. The remaining defoliation will likely be fans as they get in the way.

Here's a shot of how they look now. It might be hard to see from the photo, but I took a ton of veg once again. The amount of growth I've chopped throughout this grow has been insane.

And I couldn't make this update without showing off the flower development! The next week or so of watching the bud sites shooting out pistils is going to be very fun!

ROYAL GORILLA

LIBERTY HAZE

VIOLATOR KUSH

AMNESIA X OG

I leave a few lower branches but cut off most of the lower stuff if i can get to it. Looks like ya did a great job as always! They are flowering really nicely.. some nice hybrids in your tent. Really interested in what you think of the liberty haze when she is done. Shes more sativa then the others. I like a good sativa hybrid. :rollit:

I can’t wait to grow 4 different strains! This update is very exciting for me.

It’s nice to see you take those tops, I plan to do that in my next grow. Too many tops for my liking this time...my number one thing I’ll do differently next time:thumb:

Dobe you are nailing it man! It's crazy to literally see you go through the exact same progression that I did with growing. I mean grow for grow I see you making the same jumps that I did. Anyways the go for 12 main colas is exactly what I wanted to do with the quadline originally. You get the 4 main colas from the end of the 4 branches you train in the quadline. Then you get the next 8 colas from both the left and right side of the 1st node on each branch (they both grow evenly from the sides). However you will find that 16 is pretty ideal as it gives you a little more time in veg, which helps the root ball form better. The next node on each branch grows one up and one down. The one that grows down towards the coco almost never makes it to the canopy so I cut it off. That gives you 4 more colas. Sometimes plants with 12 actually get a little too tall for my liking. You may end up with more than 16 after stretch but you can cut down a bunch of the little tiny branches that couldn't possibly produce much and get back down to around 16 again. That whole guiding energy concept. I hope that made sense?

Anyways I wanted to ask if you had caught on to some of my posts where I have noted that I'm running a slightly higher ppm than my latest schedule says? From week 4 Flower and on I bump the ppm up 100 until the flush and it was only in an extra amount of PK. I also cut the nitrogen a week earlier. Both have seemed to have good results. I need to make another adjusted schedule but I've gotten way off the detail measuring path now. I just estimate as I kind of know and then read the PPM. At this point I bet if someone measured it all out it would still be pretty close to my schedule but its cool to have it all down to by feel now.

This is all notes notes notes for this girl! Thanks for the additional info Ase :ciao:

Hehe.... DW you showed us the pic of the tent before defol how about one after...LOL When they are healthy and happy they sure do grow.

Your tent is always so great to look at.

Let's see if I can get the multiquote thing working correctly...

I can't wait, hurry up and grow already, hahahaha. Come on VK, show me your skills. Much respect DW

Thanks G2HM! I'm about to post a big update where I give my weekly tribute to VK. She's such a beauty! I can't wait to get her grown and make her my go to night med!

Yeah, I've been really aggressive about the lower stuff. I'm low on hybrid stock and the Royal Gorilla was the one I was really looking for to fill that hole, but it looks like Amnesia x OG should be a good fit too with her leaning to the indica side. The Liberty Haze has been very much a sativa in how she has grown. She's looking really strong - I think her bud will be fantastic, maybe even overpowering!

We learn and apply and improve... every grow gets better! This is by far my best yet and I already have a ton of ideas for things to try next time. It's such an exciting hobby!

I totally boned this tonight - forgot the before. Grr. Not a ton of defol left at this point. I got some shots to make a defol tutorial eventually, but I see that being a big topic considering the extent of my defol in this grow. I was at it constantly.

Man Dobe I'm jealous of that canopy. Just a postcard right there. Beautiful.

Thanks derby! I've put in a lot of time and patience in training but it has been totally worth it so far. Hopefully things play out as I envision the rest of the way too.

@DobeWan - Check out this new feature where you can "mention" someone in a comment in your own journal and it will alert them of this particular part of the post. Just going around and sharing a new feature of this new website.

That's awesome - I haven't taken the time to dive into new features yet, soon I hope.

Looking fantastic Dobe. Beautiful, healthy plants.

Thanks Blaze! Thanks for stopping by. I'm really happy with where I am with this grow. You might remember how things looked back to my first grow; I feel like this grow is a big step forward from back then.

Totally. Growing next to you, seeing how you're doing it and what it results in, has really helped me see it all come together. I've seen exactly the behaviour you described with the one up one down. Seeing your selectivity with the tops to the canopy and then seeing in my own grow what my choices resulted in really helped my understanding of how to approach things. It's tough when you're starting out to take healthy tops but easier once you're a couple of grows in, and much easier when you can compare against someone else who is decisive in their approach.

Anyways I wanted to ask if you had caught on to some of my posts where I have noted that I'm running a slightly higher ppm than my latest schedule says? I had seen you mention an increase but not these specifics, so thanks, I'll incorporate that. I've done the opposite of your feel approach - I've taken your schedule and figured out a formulation to hit the PPM using the ingredients week over week. I'll share once all is said and done. Of course it's relative to the PPM I get from the tap but maybe someone would benefit from seeing how I figured it out to do the same for themselves. It has made mixing nutes a cinch for me - I just quickly measure out the amounts, boost the pH to get up around 6, and away we go.

15F in the flower tent! Week 3 of flower is underway!

This past week was marked by the appearance and development of flowering buds, and a ton of defoliation.

Week 3 sees me starting to boost PK and scale back N as the bud sites start to take shape and grow. KoolBloom was added and the PPM increased. The plants had a little bit of nute burn at the tips to this point, barely noticeable, so I'll keep an eye out for any change there in case I need to step them back a little for now.

Liberty Haze - She's a really big plant, and I think she's going to do well in flower in spite of her height relative to the other plants. Her growth was exceptional in veg and it forced me to take a lot of vegetation off in the end of veg and start of flower. But I am happy with where I have her now - a lot of tops and a little height variation, but good light penetration so there should be a lot of viable bud sites.

I'll likely do one last major defol late in the week, when stretch is finishing up, to get light where I want it, and to clean up the bottom half of the plant.

Ase's note on the number of tops to the canopy was an interesting one. I used it as a bit of a self check on my recent defoliation. This canopy is right in the range Ase alluded to - it has about 16 tops.

I'm really happy with how her tops stacked up - these bud sites should get good light and grow nicely.

And the top buds are already starting to take a nice shape.

There's a lot of promise with this plant. I have a few clones in the veg tent - they're all surviving, but I'll wait a few weeks and keep whatever looks the best.

Amnesia x OG - She's been a trooper. Her structure is hard to work with and the accident didn't help but she's a healthy plant now. The growth underneath her bushy fans isn't big enough to catch as much light as the fans blocking them, so my decision in some of these cases with respect to defoliation has been to leave the fans, the thinking being that I want as much light as possible for the next few days, then I'll uncover the bud sites blocked by the fans once veg growth is slowing down.

The tops have a certain heaviness to them. I wonder how this plant would do if a small number of dominant tops were allowed to grow? Quadlining but then pruning any offshoots to leave only 4 tops? The big leaves would take advantage of the open space this would provide, but the bud sites could still get light. I have another seed, whenever I end up growing it, I'll try based on the results of this grow.

She needs a little cleanup at the bottom.

The bud sites don't have the pop of the other 3 plants yet, even of the less hearty Royal Gorilla. It'll be interesting to see how they're shaped as they develop.

This plant has been through a lot and still looks healthy. As this plant was a freebie my expectations aren't off the charts, but she looks like she'll produce good bud, more on the indica side than I expected before planting the seed.

Violator Kush - I just love this plant. I love the compact, dense, bushy structure - it's perfect for a tent. I love how amazingly well everything has stacked up and how dense the colas look set to be. I love how mature and strong she is. I love that she's the main medical plant for this grow! She's going to be a killer nighttime med if things keep going down this road. In my eyes she's far and away the nicely looking plant of the bunch.

Look at how dense these colas look set to be! This is another plant where maybe less is more. Things could get really crowded and I'm going to be tempted to take any top that isn't powerful given how many strong ones I have.

My defoliation opened things up a lot, but there are still some not quite great shoots that I gave a chance to that I can spy not reaching the canopy here. I'll likely trim those in the next couple of days.

The flowers look dense and mature already relative to the other plants. She'll be the first plant to come down, without a doubt.

It was hard to get a well lit shot underneath her canopy, but check out this stem to see how dense the growth is.

I think her buds could be really fat and I could be really challenged for space. But that will be a good thing. I'm impressed with this strain since day 1. I think she's really going to deliver. I'll grow this strain again, I'm fairly certain, so next time I'll have a much better picture of how many tops she likes in the canopy. This is another strain where her density makes me suspect less could be more.

Royal Gorilla - She has seen a ton of action in the last week. Her canopy is dense but she doesn't have super strong development underneath on some stems, so I took a lot of stems off in a mission to keep the canopy full but leave well developed stems. I mostly got there. At this point the canopy can use some bending to even things up but is fairly well defined. I'll open things up with some selective defoliation later in the week but there are only a couple of stems I'm considering removing, and I'm going to give them a shot first.

Even if this stays relatively flat, the sites at the canopy should have small but frosty and potent buds.

Although somewhat small the bud sites are really maturing nicely.

Not stacking tightly like Violator Kush, but the top buds should be nice.

I'm excited about this plant. She'll be small in size and likely yield next to a Liberty Haze or Violator Kush but looks like she could produce some really nice top bud sites.

Finally, a post-defoliation and bending pic of the canopy. I forgot to take one before starting on the plants, and bent things a bit as I went, so this will have to do. All of the individual plant pics can be considered the "before" pics!

Thanks for following everyone!

Your skills have definitely improved bud. Those plants are postcard perfect. Now we just need to move all you LED guys over to HPS. :ganjamon:

I could definitely see branching out on lights in my future - but with the hype over QBoards and all that, I could see going in that direction! HPS definitely kills it in flower though.

Wow dobe, plants are looking very nice. I've got to get in and do a defol here in the next couple of days. Thanks for the defol info, and great update :thumb:

Thanks Iti, I used to find defol intimidating but the more I tried it and made mistakes, the more I learned. Now it’s just a fact of life when it comes to growing and training. I figure I have one more big one in me on Friday or Saturday to open up more light to bud sites but that’ll be it once it’s done. Smooth sailing after that I hope!

All I can say is.... Nice, Nice, Nice

Thanks JM - if my plants look like your BD I’ll be very happy!

Beauty shots! I dropped a pink Kush today!
:p:p:p

Ours will be very close then - I had to turf mine whose seed membrane didn’t come off naturally, it just wasn’t growing. I planted my new seed Saturday night so I’m hoping to see cotyledons at lights on tonight! I’m intending to flower it with my next round of flowering plants. My Green Crack, Chemdawg and Tuna Kush are all off to good starts!
