DobeWan's First Grow! LA Confidential & 24K Gold - LED - 3x3 - Coco

Either way, this makes a strong case for me to try adding H2O2 to the arsenal with every feeding. Z7 isn't available in Canada unfortunately.

Thats too bad, I think its a great product, I bump up my mixture to .75 ml each per gal on the hydro gals, no problems in that system either.

H2/O2 should work also, not sure what a mixture per gal/liter would be, I suppose it depends on the concentration you are using.

At least you know what your bugs are and other than a nuisance, your plants should be safe!:thumb:

It ships to Ottawa. Go to Amazon.com instead of Amazon.ca. Only the little bottles though. Don't panic bro. You'll be alright!! Bowl Up

Re: DobeWan's First Grow! LA Confidential & 24K Gold - LED - 3x3 - Coco

I had a close look. tl;dr - LA2 is by far the worst, the others aren't nearly as bad, and LA1 isn't showing any signs of springtails whatsoever.

LA2 is in the worst shape by far. Easy to spot the springtails even without doing too much. Moving around the surface perlite / coco that covers the highest roots would trigger their movement, and I often came upon areas of higher concentration. Worth noting that there were more roots showing on the surface of this than any other plant. The runoff clearly had springtails in it as well. 24K1 is next in magnitude, but she's way better than LA2. They were easy to spot if you moved things around and were looking for them, mostly around the edge of the medium where it meets the the pot. Some, but not a lot, visible in the runoff. 24K2 had them, but very few, just the odd one here and there if you looked hard. None visible in runoff. LA1 had no sign of them. I saw small white specks that could have just as easily been perlite, and nothing moving even when I jostled the top over the roots. LA1 continues to be full of surprises.

Given that I had some room at the top of the pots and had roots showing anyway, I decided to top each pot off with some perlite. Hopefully the higher pH of the perlite won't throw anything off until tomorrow when I water again. I fed plain water with added H2O2 tonight in any case. No nutes.

Alright, here I go going against the common thought again. Take this for what it's worth. I will clearly state that everyone's grow environments are different and I recommend you fully research your decision before deciding what to do.

I had springtails last grow and it was my best grow ever. There are two common thoughts. One is that they get incredibly out of control and when there is nothing left that is deteriorated to munch on they will go for your roots. The other theory is like they are the "sucker fish" of an aquarium. It rolls around and eats the junk and keeps things clean. It's when an ecosystem is completely taking care of itself. I think your springtails are where they should be, eating the roots on the edges that die and on the top a bit. When root tips die they become decaying plant material and that's what the springtails "sucker fish" up.

At some points I have way more springtails coming out in my drain table and other points it's only a few but my last grow rocked and my current grow seems to be better and I'd say my plants are doing pretty well. I had a bit of algae this grow too (also said to be a product of a thriving environment) and the springtails were noticeably in larger amounts during that time. Letting my plants grow recently without any defoliation, because they are in stretch, has caused the leave's shadows to cover the airpots and the algae to go away. Algae need the light to survive. The springtails were incredibly less today in my drain table. I don't see them on my surface of my coco hardly at all but I've had them for about 4-5 months now.

In conclusion my experience has been great and they are a sign (to me) as a thriving environment. They do produce Nitrogen when the excrete so you kind of have to watch for Nitrogen toxicity in flower, when you are cutting Nitrogen.

In conclusion #2 during my research I found people who claimed that they had springtails and it totally ruined their gardens. Usually they had lack of pictures and I can't really remember too many that clearly showed what they looked like and the damage they did (Maybe misdiagnosed the bug, maybe they were right?). However if the plants are healthy, the growth looks good then I don't think I would worry man! I think any bug that gets out of control has the potential to be a detriment but I've had hundreds jumping around in my drain table before. Yours sound like the same tiny white ones I had. I'd keep an eye on it but unless something changes I don't think you are in harm. I'd do a chunk of research and decide yourself. I would hate for someone to just take my experience and have something bad happen but I felt like you should take it into consideration!

Some bugs are not detrimental to your grow, some are even beneficial. I have never used chemicals of any kind to kill bugs. I have heard of people that do use chemicals and they still smoke the buds and they are not dead. Do your research, and whatever you do let us know so we can learn from your sucess.

Ase, your experience definitely holds weight. Especially since the bulk of what I can find online supports your experience, that they really don't seem to be detrimental. It's one thing to hear that from some nameless website, another to hear it from a grower that has demonstrated they know what they're doing!

I'll definitely continue researching when I have time. I'm definitely not going to do anything drastic, like use an insecticide. I'm sure with the time I have left it'd be safe, I just don't want to impact the bag appeal if I can avoid it, especially for a nuisance. I'm leaning towards controlling what I can (adding H2O2 and being diligent about not overwatering, and sucking up all runoff) and otherwise letting it be. I probably won't cycle plants in until all 4 of these come out and I can give the tent a proper cleaning. No big deal, it'll just delay my next round of flower until 24K is done.

I had a close look at my finances and figured if I was going to be able to justify the proper veg / flower setup I covet, now was the time. So I bought a Mammoth 4x4. Secret Jardin appears to be having some local supply issues, and I got a fantastic deal on the Mammoth at $260 CDN taxes in. Then, I went on Amazon and ordered the rest. Fan, filter, and Viparspectra 900 coming next week. The last half of flower is about to get a shot in the arm! And my ladies in veg are about to get upgraded to my current setup - 3x3 under a Viparspectra 600 - which I know can produce fantastic results in veg. I'm pumped! :thumb:

It may seem like we invest a lot of $$$ in the things we need to grow, but it really ends up paying you back in the end with better quality weed, a consistent supply once you are set up, and all the fun you can have growing it....WIN WIN WIN!:goof:

Awesome man. The girls are going to love the extra power and space. :thumb:

26F update!

Noticeably less presence of the springtails tonight. Looks like the H2O2 and the perlite top layer might be helping.

Ase, thanks for the tip on dialing down the nutes - I fed last night at +48 hours (plain water at +24) and opened up tonight to see claws and curled, burnt tips. I should have stayed lower on the nutes! Plain water + potassium silicate + H2O2 tonight. We'll see how things look tomorrow.

Onto pics! The LAs are on the left, 24Ks on the right. 1s on the bottom, 2s on top.

LA Confidential 1 looks like she'll have 2 big bud sites - the top of the main cola, and the cluster of flowers below it.

LA Confidential 2 looks like perhaps the low yielder of the 4. I'm starting to think LA1 may surpass her. Although the developing colas on LA2 all look decent, I think the training mistakes I made caused too much development downtime in veg. As a result she didn't get the stronger structure of the 24Ks.

To do list for this weekend. New light / fan / filter should arrive late next week.

- Set up the new Mammoth tent. Move the T5s and all veg plants into the Mammoth temporarily. Should be fine without an inline fan for a few days.

- Plant any 24K clones that look ready in solo cups. Not sure if I was clear, but I took 6 clones from 24K2 when defoliating, and I'm considering doing whatever roots as my third set in flower. Or I might just grow out a mother I can use to keep the genetics handy.

- Manifold the Chocolope. The plan for round 2 in flower is to grow Kushy Kush and LA2 in 3 gallon smart pots with minimal training and LST, but to try manifolding the Chocolope, put it into a 5 gallon smart pot, and then dedicate 2x4' in flower to it and see what happens. I want to try my hand at manifolding, and since Chocolope is a tall growing sativa this seems like a good candidate to try it with. It hit 6 nodes today, which seems like an ideal time to start manifolding. I figure I'll top twice - once to break 1 into 2 tops, a second time to break those 2 into 4. I figure I have about 6 weeks to work with, maybe more.

- Get the feeding tracking portion of my spreadsheet done. Now that I'm feeding 3 different cocktails, 1 to the LAs, one to the 24Ks, and 1 to the veg plants, I need better tracking.

- Take some photos of the ladies in flower under the T5s. It has been a while since I shared natural light photos.

That's crazy that we were planting the 24k g at the same time and even tho mine didn't sprout I can still keep up with your process and that there already making buds! How many weeks did you veg for ?

I did 51 days total of veg. I would probably go less next time. Once those tips reach the edge of the pot she's good to go I think!

I took flowering clones on 7/11 too - not sure how long veg will be going the clone route and having to reveg, but I have a ton of time before spots will open in the tent so I'm not worried.

Looking good, Dobe. Haven't been by here in awhile. Love the trichomes already showing on Kosher Tangie 2.

I just wanted to pop by to see how the appointment went today. Shoot me a PM or post on my off topic thread and let me know.

Take care.

LOL! I thought weekends were time to kick back and take it easy!:laughtwo:

You forgot mowing the yard, the random honeydew list and playing with the kids...you will need a weekend from your weekend...growing MJ is a lot of hard work!

I'm not entirely sure how to spot stacking buds - surprisingly I couldn't find good pics in a quick search, but everyone who has grown before seemingly knows exactly what it means. I think I'm seeing it now. Take a wild guess which of the ladies is clearly showing it? 24K2 of course. I should have given her a woman's name so that I could swoon over her more appropriately! :laughtwo:

I'll post up some pics soon.

This work is so relaxing though! I had no idea being with the plants would be so therapeutic.
