DobeWan's First Grow! LA Confidential & 24K Gold - LED - 3x3 - Coco

Decided to do an intermediate pot up on the 3 healthy veg plants. All went into 1-gallon plastic pots from solo cups, and will be moved into 3 gallon smart pots eventually.

I'm going to give them a couple of days to recover then top the Chocolope.

Yeah so I'm a little paranoid about light getting into the tent so I added a blank and am I Gona grab fabric and cut to size to cover the whole

and some temp fabric here

Oh Boy! Training time! :slide:
What is your plan for this go around?

I was thinking I'd let the 2 indicas go on their own with minimal training. I want to see what LA2 does left relatively alone like LA1 was. Chocolope will demand training though. I have 5+ weeks before LA Confidential gets chopped, and I'll likely then flip the LA2 clone and Kushy Kush - assuming they survive! When the 24K Gold is ready to be chopped 7+ weeks from now, I'll likely put Chocolope in, in a 5 gallon Smart Pot. If it has half of the tent to itself, I'll have plenty of room to pull branches to the sides when I need to. I'll also get way better light penetration with one plant taking the space I normally use for 2 plants.

Lots of work done in the grow today...

- Big defoliation of all 4 plants in flower. I really spent a lot of time on this, and I was pretty nervous doing so. I took a ton of leaves - more than I was comfortable with, really - and I think it was likely a result of being too timid when defoliating prior to flipping. But I think it was the right call for me to take the risk and see what lessons I learn. This is it - from here I'll only clip a fan leaf if it starts blocking flower growth. Thanks for the tip, Blaze, on how you defoliate, it was helpful.

- Potted up the LA2 clone and the Kushy Kush and Chocolope seedlings to 1 gallon plastic pots. This is a stopgap - I don't have any smart pots on hand, but my intention is to go up to 3 gallon smart pots for the indicas and a 5 gallon for the Chocolope.

- Took a few clones for another shot at keeping 24K2 alive. I know the timing is less than ideal, but I wanted to take one last shot. If it doesn't work out, no problem, I still have 6 24K seeds so finding this phenotype again - and the other two for the first time - is likely.

- Prepped solo cups for the clones to go into once they start showing signs of rooting.

I'm still not happy with the veg tent setup given how amazingly veg went with my first run. I really want to upgrade, but it's hard to justify right now. We'll see.

A few shots of the damage post-defoliation on 23F! You'll notice I went back to blurple - I figured it was safe now that stretch appears to be over.

Thanks again for following along!

Wow, now you can really see how much they've stretched. Looking good Dobe. Now pray to the ganja god that they start stacking. :thumb:

I can't wait to defoliate my girls. They are bushes and I don't like it. It is so hard for 3 weeks to completely not touch my plants and just let them grow straight up. I can't wait to do these to my girls. Just a reminder that you may want to back off a little bit on the ppms your are giving them and amount of water. For at least 36-48 hours mine tend to not uptake as much and show nute burn easier if I keep them at the same levels I was feeding them prior to defoliation.

Your defoliation looks great, don't be nervous. They will do just fine. I'm a BIG fan of getting light everywhere it can. Blaze has won some nice POTM awards so taking his advice shouldn't make you nervous! Keep up the good work!

Nice flowers! You have really done a fantastic job on this grow, and it looks like you should get a great harvest. :thumb:

Thanks for the kind words Lady A, Ase and Blaze!

Just to be clear Ase - it's not Blaze's advice that worried me it's my interpretation and implementation! I've been referencing growweedeasy's guides by Nebula too and his advice was the same as Blaze's essentially. I guess even with a clear plan some choices are judgment calls and I'm just worried about whether I made the right calls in those cases. But that's me, if you couldn't tell from this journal, I tend to worry!

You all dropping by here has been invaluable to me - I really sincerely appreciate both the tips and the encouragement.

DobeWan's First Grow! LA Confidential & 24K Gold - LED - 3x3 - Coco

Everything is looking great man. Your nutrients schedule seems OK too, but no grow portion at all? Haven't seen that before, except for late bloom. Don't forget the dry KoolBloom in the last two weeks before flush. Keep up the good work man!
Oh, btw, I repeat my week 5 as many times as I need to, to accommodate the bloom time.

Thanks Mike!

I thought it was odd Grow was not included as well, but I saw a lot of people using the same recommended feeding chart on another forum and went with it. Figured it was a straightforward schedule for a noob.

I have an unopened bottle of Grow - might try feeding the GH recommended schedule some time and see how it goes.

Help!!!

I have a problem with bugs. I only noticed it tonight, and it appears it has already taken hold somewhat. I have not been able to identify the bugs, so I have no idea what the impact is or how to fix it.

They are tiny, white bugs. Only a millimetre or so long each. Thin, pill-shaped body. 2 white antennae in a v-shape. Not super fast moving. No sign of wings or jumping.

If I move the soil on top, I can spot them moving around. They are almost entirely in the LA2, but I was able to find them in 24K2 when I looked closely, although it is far less pronounced. I had to look hard. Whereas once I knew what I was looking for in LA2 I spotted them easily.

They appear to be living only in the soil / roots. I couldn't find any sign of any of them on the leaves. Many of them washed into the LA2 runoff tonight when I watered. I watered with plain water, with 1.5ml of H2O2 added to the 4L of water I used.

I can't help but think they're munching on my roots, and that's why I noticed the sulfur smell a few days ago.

Anyone?

Had a bit of a eureka moment when trying to diagnose the issue. Trying to pick them out of the pot with my fingertip, it seemed one was jumping as I went after it. With my previous description and that fact in hand, the ol' Google box helped me identify them as springtails.

Have you coco growers had these before and if so, have you intervened in any way? I have to admit, between the hint of sulfur smell and now this, I'm tempted to let the pots get dryer between waterings. My pots still feel damp on the bottom when I lift them every night for their next watering.

I am sure they will multiply, they are living in the coco and they feed on decaying roots and/or fungi and rarely damage plants

Stick traps would control them, they love moisture but you really don't want to dry out your coco.

Maybe wash the outside of your pots and catch pans with a little bleach/water mixture to kill any fungi you may not know you have.

Would it be safe to apply a fungicide of some kind to get rid of any fungus? I'm thinking I'll ask my friendly neighbourhood hydro store for their suggestion tomorrow too.

It wouldn't hurt to ask, they may have a spray that would help, or may have something to mix in with your nutes. I have been using Z7 at .50 ml per gal (2 part mixture) throughout my coco grow which is supposed to prevent root problems...so far so good!

Either way, this makes a strong case for me to try adding H2O2 to the arsenal with every feeding. Z7 isn't available in Canada unfortunately.
