DIY Stealth Cab, Hydro, LED & Multiple Strains in Small Space - Oh Boy!

Hey Mr. Krip! Every time I type your name I think of this classic....

YouTube - The Beatles - Being for the benefit of Mr.Kite

Can you share your foliar spraying technique with us? Do you worry about spray getting on the buds?

I don't have the best sense of smell but I had to also pretty much gently squeeze the buds and smell my fingers too or I couldn't smell anything.

Now that they're cured though, they stink. I can put a tiny bud in a baggie and if it gets warm it stinks to high heaven... I do all my transporting in jars or sealed plastic containers now.

Weed is funny isn't it? I think the bubba kush is the best, another friend says no contest it's the lucy, and then there's the ak which for me is 2nd best haha. All 3 kick ass so that's what counts in the end. :peace:

LOL...thanks Blue! It could be worse...you could have said you thought of this old classic (take bong hit now!) which is the song my screen name reminds me of (you'll need to change the name to "Krip" :) :

YouTube - The Grinch Song

My technique for foliar isn't really much of a technique. I just mix the solution in the sprayer, turn off the CFL's (I don't bother turning off the LED), the basically spray down the leaves and buds, then turn the CFL's back on so the extra heat can help them dry.

I don't raise the lights (although, I'm familliar with doing this and why) and I always foliar just after lights-on, so they have all day to dry before lights-out. I'll also open the cab door for the first 30 minutes or so after a foliar, which also speeds the drying and keeps the humidity down in the cab.

As the buds get a little bigger and more dense, I'll be a little more careful, but I'm not looking to "drench" the plants, I just coat them with a layer of mist.

I must say that the SSU does appear to be helping, but again, I'm not doing any controlled test, so perhaps it's just lucky timing.

Howdy Mr. K -

It looks like everything is going swimmingly, but I just noticed something I wanted to float by you... I've never used Snow Storm Ultra, but I looked into it recently, and I seem to remember that they recommended using a lower PPM in your reservoir when using SSU... It sounded like you were using both a high PPM with your nutrients, and applying SSU. Just want to make sure that you are on top of this and not shocking your plants too much or burning them.

Like I said - things look good and it sounds like they're all healthy, but I noticed that and wanted to just make sure you are taking all of that into consideration... They sure look healthy and yummy! :yummy:

:MoreNutes:

Thanks, XLR8. That is correct, they recommend you lower PPM's and the biggest issue is to NEVER use it in a res with an airstone and that you should never have PPM's over 1,000.

They way it worked was that I was on GH nutes, exceeding their recommended aggressive feeding plan at 1500 PPM. I then switched to the AN Nutes on a more conservative feeding schedule at only 700 PPM. That same day, the SSU was delivered and since I had just cut PPM's in half, and went from exceeding GH's maximum PPM's to AN's more conservative mix, I did not bother trying to further lower the PPM's. The plants seem to be handling it well, and I even did a second foliar last week, although they only recommend once weekly.

That all being said, you are 100% correct that they do warn against over fertilization and recommend lowering PPM's when applying. Personally, I believe that would be more important if I were adding to the res than just using in foliar.

Cool - looks like you've got a good handle on it. Just wanted to make sure you weren't going to accidentally cook your ladies. :)

PACKING ON THE WEIGHT

I adjusted PH this morning, after topping off the res's. By tomorrow, PH should stabilize for the rest of the week (based on last week's experience!). The lighted microscope came in the mail today, so hopefully later, I'll try to get some trich shots. The trichs are definately much clearer in the microscope and I can see there are about 10% amber trichs, with the rest being about a 50/50 clear/milky mix. The SSU does appear to helping with trich production, and I'm definately going to be using it again on my next grow.

Here are a few pics I shot this morning:

H! Where ya' been? How's that last harvest treating you? Keeping you too sedated to stop by? :)

When's your next journal starting?

Thanks for the tip on the Botanicare giveaway!

Actually, by the four weeks I meant they're going to be zeppelins by then!!

That's what I'm hoping for...nice dense nug's as big as zeppelins and heavy as lead. In fact, if she starts producing those lead zeppelin nugs, I might just name her "Jimmy Plant"! :laughtwo:

PICS FROM A BUDDING YOUNG GROWER

Tonight will be day #46 of 12/12 on the AK and day #44 on the haze. I took some of the "booster blocks" off the haze, since she's almost the same height as the AK, just not as developed.

I must say, over the last couple of days I'm seeing the buds start to put on some mass and almost turning into something worthy of smoking. :grinjoint:

If I counted them all, the AK has about a dozen big colas, with a few being over 15" long! If these things fatten up the way I hope, there should be a very good yield in that small space.

Here's the bud pics from just before lights-out tonight:

Looking great Mr. Krip! I'm anxious to see your pics. What did you get exactly?

Have you seen this video? Jorge Cervantes talking about perfectly ripe indicas. Interesting comment about trichs when he talks about the OG Kush.

If I liked them on facebook I'd be getting a lot of phone calls I'd rather not deal with :tokin:

Blue, yeah...I'm figuring almost four weeks...maybe even a little longer. I think your question as to what I got refers to the 60x/80x/100x portable lighted microscope. I'm gonna TRY to see if I can get some camera shots thru the microscope to put up some trich pics. I don't know how these will turn out, but it's easier to see the trichs with it than the 20x/30x jewelers loupe I had been using. Actually, with the portable microscope, I also picked up a 60x lighted jewelers loupe. They're nothing fancy...I actually picked up both of them for less than $5 combined, including shipping! But, they both seem to work well, especially for the price.

The lighted microscope has a detachable stand, so I'm hoping that will make it easier to take the pics.

I like the video and it's interesting the Cervantes is acknowleging that trich color really isn't the determining factor in quality or best time to harvest.

I've also realized that depending on which bud or leave your looking at, the mix of trich colors will vary, so while it may be an indication of when to harvest, it's pretty much non-reliable as the sole method of determining when is best.

Hey Mr K!

Can't beat the price I don't know how anyone can possibly make any money doing that! Must be 100% automated. I paid $18 at Radio Shack for mine, it's good but I don't think I could take pics through it. I'm going to look for a 40 or 50x one like Jorge uses.

I thought it was interesting too how incredibly crucial the dry and cure are to getting what we're after. I'm so thankful to whoever created that post on curing because my stuff seems just perfect to me right now... it's sticky, not really moist but close, smells awesome and smokes great. It's about 60rh now, 45 days since the chop.

I like nice, clear, connect-the-dots instructions :tokin:

Yeah...I got lucky on a couple of eBay auctions, but they're still cheap...search ebay for "lighted microscope" and you'll see them for only a few bucks. They take about two weeks to ship because, you guessed it, they come from China. But, like I said, for the price, they seem to work well.

I did read the threads on drying and curing.

I picked up one of those drying nets and was planning on grabbing a big cardboard box - one of those wardrobe boxes they use to move clothes in. I'll hang the drynet in there, add some ventillation and do the dry that way. I need to start shopping for canning jars for the curing! I haven't purchased them yet, but I also found some mini-hygrometers that can be put right in the curing jars to give a read on RH.

BTW....that brings up a question...I would NEVER dry/cure my buds this way, but for testing nugs, when you need to do a "quick dry", have you tried using a food dehydrator? I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone comment on this in any of the forums, but it seems to me it would be a good way since it's low heat.

damn mr krip! look at you killlin it with that cabinet grow! Seems like u were able to deal with that height problem pretty easily good job dude! Have u thought about scrog or LSTing the plants next grow?? Dude im guessing 3 zips dried easy!

Hydro, thanks, man! :thankyou:

I would be very happy with 3 z's in there for a first grow. I've been LST'ing since day #1 on this grow along with some supercropping. I did strongly consider SCROG, but I'm not that height limited - I just want to grow one or two bigger plants rather than several smaller. The ONLY issue with the SCROG was that using the waterfarms, it would be a real PITA to do res changes in my cabinet. This is not really an issue with the waterfarms, but more with my cabinet size, location, and location of water.

First, keep in mind I've dedicated one side of the cab to veg and the other side for flower, so the SCROG would need to be portable, not interfere with the mothers & clones, etc. OR I could only start the SCROG once they went into flower. But, all that aside...

Since the water source isn't in the same room, which happens to be carpeted, I didn't want to have to drain the waterfarms, lug the waste water across the house, then fill up a larger res, then lug that back across the house, then re-fill the individual waterfarms, all in the limited space of the flower side of the cab, and all without spilling anything along the way. I'm not that coordinated even when I'm not baked, which isn't all that often on the weekends, when I do the res changes! :)

Without the SCROG, I just take the individual waterfarms, with the plants, to the master bathroom which has plenty of space to work in then move the waterfarms back. Individually, there's only 2 gallons of water, so they're fairly light, and they're made with molded handles, so they're easy to move.

I hear ya there man... I acually Drilled a hole through some seriouse wood in my floor to get to my crawl space so i could run a hose from my bathroom to my cellar. There was no water source down there and making multiple trips back and forth through my house and down to the cellar. Na im good i drilled the hole and life got much better :)
Of course i had to purchase a special adapter so i could even hook the hose to the bathroom sink but it worked out.
Dont have to worry bout that anymore. Im n the house now ;)

I wish I had a dehydrator because that would be perfect for test buds. I stuck them in the oven on warm for a half hour or so. Make sure you dry them enough, I kept rushing them and if they're too wet you can't really get a good toke going.

I've got two kinds of mason jars, both quarts but one has a really wide mouth, about the size of the jar. The other necks down to a noticably smaller mouth. If you can get the wide mouths. I'd like some bigger jars too but I don't know where to get them.

As long as your temps are below 75 and the rh is 60 or less your dry should go fine, above that and you have to be more careful.

I see smooth sailing ahead with at worst a few choppy waves :rollit:
