Dennise - No Longer The Newest Of Newbies - Not Growing In MG - Perpetual

Great idea Bob. Do you have any homebrew heavily dry hopped with myrcine heavy hops like cascade or citra? Bring some if you do. We need to experiment.

Hey PeeJay, I think I just caught onto what you are maybe thinking. Combine some crazy hoppy west coast IPA (Ruination, Piny the Elder, BigC homebrew) with a really nice sativa and see how the edge is affected. Could this be why I have quit drinking anything but hoppy IPAs years ago?

We may need to put away some serious green on both the brew and bud side to really be scientific.

Bob ;)

I'm still wondering if I should top my outdoor soil. I know Buckshot uses Gnat nix - that broken glass - to top his soil.. I'm concerned about gnats and other unwanted pests..

IDK, do you think topping one stage of the cycle (Seedling,Veg,Flower) would be more critical than another, in terms of fending off gnats and other predators?

The main reason I'm torn about this is because I was planning on using a top-soil for additional plant nutrition.

I'm planning on using PJ's mix (which reminds me, have you guys considered the dangers bat guano has been reportedly associated with?), do you (Bob, Dennise, anyone who also uses PJ's or an all/mostly organic mix) use compost teas? If so, at what stages do you typically try to use them?

I'm starting to wonder if I should still even transplant if I were to grow outdoor for only one harvest?

Where's the benefit in going from Seedling to Veg to Flower, if someone's not going the perpetual route? What about just going from a ~3G pot to 8G?

I used white stones for awhile for the same reason on my grow. Silly hard to recover them all. I gotta try those clay balls too sometime.

And Dennise was right about the root balls too. I pull the stem out of the ball, toss the rest into a huge plastic tote full of root balls. Those get broken down, rinsed (for the ones that had old liquid salty newts in 'em, otherwise no need) and then that is my tote of "pro mix" for the next run. Do it 3 times then those go into beds outdoors. At least that is my current plan.

And Hey, Bob :ciao:

Are those white stones are perlite, Doc?

I know you said you plan on doing this 3 times before bedding it outside, I'm assuming that's in a mix of some sort contained in a box and not just out in open air, am I wrong? Also, do the roots become very dry, brittle, and light? How long do you think it will be before you bed the roots/eventually use them in a soil?

Please, help me understand! :blalol:

Kinda went all over the place on this one, I counted 10 questions :blunt:

Hope most of this mess I've left can be addressed. As always, thanks guys. I'm learning so much.:thanks:

Are you talking about bat guano wars and Americas claim on all unclaimed guano found by its citizens anywhere in the world? If so, that's some full on shite.

Well I really don't know a whole lot about growing outside.... I have had a outdoor grow the last 2 years but to be honest they were both just  grows and I didn't really know what I was doing... they were still in pots and I haven't ever really grown anything outside just planted in the ground.... I only use the hydroton as a top dressing to help me with dispersing the water... I tend to be a bit heavy handed and leave indentions in my soil if I don't.... You need to be careful with adding soil around your stem... I will admit that I have done it but have recently read on PJ's thread that it is not a good thing to do.... He has all the scientific reasons listed but I know that I trust him and if he says it is a bad thing to do... I believe it and don't really understand all the science anyhow.... As far as when or how to top a girl... We're going to have to wait for someone else to pop in... I have never really done that.... I manipulate my girls with LST and with that I am able to get an even canopy and I do defol quite heavily for better light penetration.... As far as gnat problems... the best solution I have found for that is B A R's recipe.... cup of water with a cap of peroxide and a drop of dawn... put it in a spray bottle and spray your girl at lights out for up to 3 days... I have never had to use it for more than 2 days and the problem is solved..... I think you are talking about Diatomaceous earth... I know it works... I have never used it... but I have been told it is messy and hard to deal with and the recipe I just posted works really well and you don't have the mess..... If you are having an issue with worm type thingies... plant marigolds and water with or foliar spray a solution of Rosemary and water.... They don't like the taste of it... Sierra Natural also makes a solution using the Rosemary that is organic and works really well and will also cause her to have better trich production... Found that out in last years grow.... the moth worms were terrible and I used a lot of the SNS209.... the most resinous girl I have ever grown... A lot of members had a really rough time with bugs this last season...:thedoubletake: I think PJ has changed the recipe a bit for some other members that only has the seedling soil and then the veg/bloom soil but I like having the 3 stages and makes me feel like they have access to everything they need the entire grow.... Other than adding water to the PJ soil on a indoor grow... I only add essential oils as a foliar spray starting at week 3 of flower and spray them every 3 days at light out and stop 2 weeks before harvest... This adds copious amounts of trichromes.... I do use the bat guano and to be honest didn't even know there was any issues with it... It hasn't killed me yet and my girls really like it so yep guess I will continue to use it... I hope this answers at least some of your questions and someone will pop through in a bit and answer the ones I don't know.... If I missed something please ask away....:circle-of-love:
Beautiful words D!
Yep... my english professor would be proud...;).....:circle-of-love:

Thank you Dennise!!! Thank you too, PJ. I only did one small grow in DWC, and did everything wrong. So I decided to start at the beginning again. I can get it to the seedling stage but then it seems to stretch too much and then die. Now I have PJ's soil and want to start from the first step, I am a bit nervous about trying to do a formal grow journal so wish me luck. Please be patient.:Namaste::Namaste::thanks: Dan

The BEST thing you can do is make a journal. Nobody here will judge you, just help and give advise!! That is how we learn. When you start from the beginning, a more experienced grower may pick up on a mistake you are making so you can correct it before it becomes a major issue. Start the journal. Take pictures. Share. You will see what a positive experience it will be!!! :peace:

OK 7 I will just post it up again... I think it will be easier than trying to find it in all this.......:circle-of-love:

seedlings:
2 gallon Promix HP
2 qt perlite
1 cup compost
1/4 cup yum-yum
3 Tbsp step 1 (mycorrhizae)
1.5 cups water

Veg soil:
6 gallon Promix HP
1 gallon perlite
3 qt worm castings
6 cups compost
3.5 cups yum-yum
1 cup azomite
2 Tbsp stop 1 (mycorrhizae)
1 qt water

Flower:
15 gallon Promix HP
3 gallons perlite
1 gallon worm castings
3 qts compost
2 qts yum-yum
3 cups azomite
1.5 cups bat guano
2 cups rock phosphate
2.5 qts water

l... I watered the 5 gallon pot today with Olivia in it.... It took the entire 5 gallons and drained less than a cup out... I have used everything from Miricle Grow :thedoubletake: to Fox Farms and all the nutes in between and I promise you hands down and by far... this is not only the easiest soil ever to work with... it grows the best herb I have ever smoked... It just don't get better and it ain't never gonna get no easier... Now I'm sure PJ knows a trick or 2 for doing a drench here and a foliar there with this and that but so far I am just absolutely thrilled with the PJ soil and purified water... The only thing I had to add during the last 2 grows was cal/mag and that is because of the LEDs... I don't really know the science behind it but they all do it and almost everyone posts they have to add extra cal/mag.... If this show up in your grow... just add 1 tsp per gallon (5ml) and it will clear any issue right up with a defeciency of calcium and magnesium.....:circle-of-love:

I obviously was stoned when I posted this.... The Baby Tut obviously didn't take 5 gallons of water... She took 1 gallon of water.....:circle-of-love:

Thanks hun. Now I remember I don't have promix. Well cap can't do what I wanted now.. back to drawing board.

Are you talking about bat guano wars and Americas claim on all unclaimed guano found by its citizens anywhere in the world? If so, that's some full on shite.
The ethical reasons aren't a concern for me, its effect on us is my concern.

This, plus another 420 forum's thread, is where most (all) of my uneducated opinion is coming from.
Is Bat Guano Dangerous?

I haven't read much past those two sources.. but breathing in those spores does not sound kosher, although I'm aware that we inhale mold spores on a daily basis just by going through life, and of course when we smoke/vape mold-containing herbage. I was just wondering if these health concerns have crossed the minds of those who use bat guano in their mixes and teas. I used to think it was cool to get your hands dirty with soil and not even wash them, if I'm using guano.. not so much.

If I end up using guano (which I probably will), I'll follow what those guys on the other forum recommended and use a particle mask & gloves while mixing everything.

And thanks for the help Dennise, I really appreciate everything you've shared. :circle-of-love:

I've seen your praises about using the essential oil as foliar spray twice a week, but I feel like I haven't been able to find exactly what it consists of. Is it only rosemary oil with water?

OK 7 I will just post it up again... I think it will be easier than trying to find it in all this.......:circle-of-love:

seedlings:
2 gallon Promix HP
2 qt perlite
1 cup compost
1/4 cup yum-yum
3 Tbsp step 1 (mycorrhizae)
1.5 cups water

Veg soil:
6 gallon Promix HP
1 gallon perlite
3 qt worm castings
6 cups compost
3.5 cups yum-yum
1 cup azomite
2 Tbsp stop 1 (mycorrhizae)
1 qt water

Flower:
15 gallon Promix HP
3 gallons perlite
1 gallon worm castings
3 qts compost
2 qts yum-yum
3 cups azomite
1.5 cups bat guano
2 cups rock phosphate
2.5 qts water

How many girls do you cycle with those proportions, and in what sized pots?

Also, not to confuse anyone by practically posting the same mix twice. But I'm planning on PJ's mix-that Doc shared with me-with only the slightest variation from the one above, which is exactly the same but with the compost being 5 times the amount in Fox Farms Ocean Forest.
Baby soil:
2 gallon ProMix HP
2 qts perlite
5 cup FFOF
1/4 cup yum-yum (organic nutes)
3 Tbsp beneficial mycorrhiza (Growology step 1 is what I use)
1.5 cups water

Veg soil:
6 gallons ProMix
1 gallon perlite
3 qts worm castings
7.5 qts FFOF
3.5 cups yum-yum
1 cup azomite
2 Tbsp beneficial mycorrhiza
1 qt water

bloom soil:
15 gallons ProMix
3 gallons perlite
1 gallons worm castings
15 qts FFOF
2 qts Yum-Yum
3 cups azomite
1.5 cups Bat Guano
2 cups rock phosphate
2.5 qts water

Hmm... it's not important but I'll mention for anyone who may get similarly confused.. 1 cup = 0.25 quart
For a second while comparing the FFOF mix to PJ's 'original' one... I was doing the math wrong and was only converting 6 cups into quarts and got that I should only use 1.5 quarts of FFOF in the veg mix... I wasn't multiplying by 5.

Always wear mask and gloves....

Sound advice, but I'm someone who need things spelled out for me :sorry:

I understand KISS.. but when you say always.. do you mind being a little more specific?

Do you wear the mask when watering, harvesting, trimming, or just gloves at those times?

Edit: Common sense tells me you don't wear the mask when you're watering or chopping.. Lol. I'm just wondering when you're less concerned with wearing it. Trying not to be a nuisance, I swear :clown:

Human your adorable.... There are 5 of the oils... clove, cinnamon, rosemary, thyme, and oregano... I know...:yikes:... It sounds like a yucky soup...:thedoubletake: The amounts you use are so small the only way I could figure out to do it was to take 5ml of each and mix them together then pull up 2.5ml of the mix... add that at 2.5ml per gallon then pour in a spray bottle and apply at lights out pretty heavily every 3 days till about 2 weeks before harvest... I think some say to do it through till harvest... but I don't want anything on my flowers for 2 weeks before chop...:high-five:....:circle-of-love:

Oh and on the gloves and mask thing... Honestly the only time I really worry about it is when I mix up the soil... It is done outside to start with so ventilation is not a problem but I don't like the idea of having bat poop under my nails so I do wear gloves... There is a lot of the ammendments that seem to be "dusty" so the mask probably wouldn't be a bad idea but I don't ever do it... I tried to harvest with gloves on and I seriously don't know how people do it and I was a nurse way back when...... I hope this helps a bit..:circle-of-love:

Thanks hun. Now I remember I don't have promix. Well cap can't do what I wanted now.. back to drawing board.

I've got enough for you to make a small batch... there's enough for what you need.... I think I have most of the amendments too... and about a half bag of yum-yum so we could make a half batch... You won't need baby soil just veg and bloom... yep I got enough... You just have to bring a tote and mix it up.......:circle-of-love:
