Decoding The Holy Grail: Terpene & Cannabinoid Retention: Decarb to Extraction

Sue, ask me in a private message what I thought the most significant thing I had learned from this experience so far. Probably most who are following this thread are wondering the same thing so I thought I would answer her hear.

I don't think it is so much what we have learned as it is new approaches are popping up from members and in my own head. For instance, I had never considered the pros and cons of decarbing before infusion or an extraction.

As a group we are getting Ideas that will need testing or a lot of trial and error. Hopefully some members will show up who have access to lab testing.

Kickn, has been lobbying for a terpene test on some 4 hr oil infusion from some Nova decarbed buds that he used a crock pot for the heat source. The only other terpene oil test is the fresh harvest extreme. It did not have much of a decarb and lost a lot of terpenes in the infusion. The 4 hr sample should let us know what percentage of the terpenes are making it through the processing with the Nova.

I have gone through the terpene test for the Extreme plant. I still need to get it into a spread sheet. It is just a few columns so it won't take much to put it together.

The cannabinoid infusion percentage math needs typing up corrected and looked over by Kickn before I want to post it here for error checking.

Best

I think short as possible is going to be the way to go. The longer it sits, the warmer it gets. And, probably picks up other stuff by hanging around too long.

BTW, is apx 85% extraction efficiency with QWET about the accepted norm? Or, am I dazed & confused. Either is always a possibility.

When I let it sit, I let it sit completely covered in dry ice for 1 hour. It didn't warm at all, only returning about every 10 minutes to shake a bit.

Dang, I am rusty with Excel.
This is sheets 10 and12. It needs some cleaning up. Eventuely I want to add pivot tables and the other terpenes form the Extended test. With this format we should be able to do direct comparisons from any tests we can find and want to work with.

I don't want to have the pressure cooker decarb samples tested until I get some feedback about how much time and pressure is being tried.

We have a flower terpene test on the Nightmare Cookies. A terpene test from Kickn's Nova decarbed 4hr run will allow us to compare the individual terpene extractions as a percent extracted from the flowers into the carrier oil.

I can deliver whatever we want to test Monday to the lab or we can wait until around the 20th when I will be there again.

I never know

So about half the assorted terpenes made it thru the process. And, we lost about half of the 5 we got. Oh well. Better than nothing. It will be interesting to see if the nova oil is better or worse. Of course we will have a different selection because of different starting material but some will overlap. This is going to take some time. After several tests, we will know if we always lose the same ones. They are such tiny stuff- probably would fall into the "trace" category when analyzing most things. They must be seriously potent to affect much in the body. Interesting stuff. Thanks Canyon!

PS: I'm amazed the instruments are good enough to pick up that last one.

Canyon -- Any chance of posting a bigger image file? Or just posting the actual numbers and not an image? That compressed lil' 2" x 5" image is makin' me go blind tryin' to read it...

Push the Ctrl button and hold, then hit the plus button to make the image bigger:Namaste:

I'm sure you knew that but maybe someone else did not :smokin2:

I was gonna come back with a snarky statement that it makes the image bigger but doesn't help the resolution, but the truth is, when I did as you suggest, I can read it just fine now. Thanks. :)

Snarky works too :thedoubletake::Love: And, your welcome Scientific :Namaste:

If you're looking for us to decide which test to do, I say that 4-hr Nova decarbed sample is a shoe-in.

Wuick question. Is this image better than the first one I posted on a small screen?. We have some charts that should be ready to post soon. The first method is simple. This way requires converting file types twice.
Er.....well,

The first one was with a sniping tool. This one I copied to PDF and saved it as a JPG. Let's compare.

Canyon has been working hard on spreadsheets. He's checking over one now that will show you the flow from bud to extraction. Compare the traits of the starting mtl to after decarb & then 2 & 4 hrs oil. Note, the Nightmare Cookies did not start with a full array of cannabinoids. I dont think any do but certainly some have more. Canyon, I have not looked at the first 2 pages regarding FHO yet.

Hopefully these will be readable. This is the best I can do for now. There has to be a simple way to convert Excel selections to JPG. I will get it sorted out but not until Tuesday.

I will drop off the 4hr oil for testing tomorrow in between doctor appointments and hopefully get back home before midnight.

I will get Extended terpenes for sure. I am not sure about the cannabinoid test. I will probably get the standard test.

I never know

Ok, we need to get the resolution up on these sheets. I will look at it today. Canyon has plenty to worry about right now. Also, Canyon, I don't think we would learn much from an extended cannabinoid test on the oil. Terpenes for sure.

Easy

When u save the Excel sheet to a jpg or PDF just be sure it's at high res, or slide the bar all the way right
A PDF can get big, but the jpg shod be fairly small file, a meg or two

Yer guys work is great...thanks again

Just a thought: I have worked on online, collaborative projects before in which we saved all of our data to online spreadsheets at Google docs.

We had them set up so everyone could both view and modify them, but you can set permissions to view-only for non-principals.

The great thing about that solution is that you're looking at the actual spreadsheet and so can manipulate and copy the data.

Google Sheets - create and edit spreadsheets online, for free.

Yeah, but I didn't see that option. I guess I never had to make a jpg from excel. I will try xlsx >pdf > jpg. GRRRR
